Who is the savior?
“You need to rest Evie. You just landed and came to visit me. At least sleep for some time and then we can go.” Mr. Clarke insisted.
Evelyn who was busy on the phone ended the call and then turned to him.
“It’s fine Dad. Joseph, my secretary, has done all the arrangements. We will be staying in the hotel till the evening because we have a flight at 9 pm. Don’t worry. And see, the cab has also arrived, let’s go.”
Mr. Clarke sighed in defeat as she coiled her arm around him and headed to the car.
“Why didn’t you bring someone along with you to avoid the hassle?”
Mr. Clarke wasn’t liking the way Evelyn was pushing herself. Tiredness was dripping from her face but didn’t she let the smile waver as she didn’t want him to worry.
“It’s fine Dad. I have people who work for me. Besides it’s not my first time visiting a city alone.”
She chuckled and opened the door for Mr. Clarke. She was helping him get inside the car when a loud shrill echoed from behind flinching them.
“Hello Ma’am”
Evelyn closed her eyes, her jaw clenching while Mr. Clarke had a puzzled expression on his face.
“Who is he, Evie?” He asked while referring to a tall man who was built like Hulk.
Hunter bowed to him before introducing himself.
“I am Hunter, her bodyguard.” He clipped.
Evelyn’s glare immediately flew toward him. Her jaw dropped.
“Bodyguard, but you said you came alone.”
Evelyn was like a child who was caught lying. She shook her head negatively and started explaining to her father.
“No Dad, he is-”
“Did she? Why Ma’am? I served you with my life and you didn’t even give me the credits. I am hurt.” Hunter feigned sadness enraging her.
‘This prick.’
Calming herself down, she straightened her posture and gave a tight-lipped smile to Mr. Clarke.
“Dad, just wait for a second. I have some things to discuss.”
She spoke and without even waiting for his response dragged Hunter to the side of the road.
Evelyn harshly jerked his hands, her eyes shooting lasers at the man.
“What’s the meaning of all this? I am warning you, I’ll send you and your fucking Boss to jail if you don’t stop following me.” She seethed.
Hunter broke into cold sweats watching the murderous look in her eyes.
“Ma’am, please try to understand. You came with Boss which will be like a jackpot for his rivals who wouldn’t wait a second and come out to hunt you. You need to have protection at least think from the perspective of your father, you will be risking his life too. To not let this happen, Boss has assigned me the responsibility of your protection. If I fail, he will have my head.”
Evelyn turned silent, she could see the fear in his eyes.
But she wasn’t ready to fall for these tricks.
“Why did you drag me in the first place then? You both put my life in danger. Now just get lost and stop bothering me.” She grated and rounded to get inside the car. But Hunter was still on her trail, working hard to convince her mind.
“Please Ma’am, have mercy. I have a wife and a kid. What will happen to my family if I die?”
Evelyn halted in her tracks. Her face which was contoured in fury morphed into a worried one. She turned around and looked at Hunter with a frown.
“You have a wife?”
Hunter nodded while his lips tugged downward, giving her a sorrowful look.
“Please, Ma’am. Let me do my duty.”
His words tugged her heart.
Evelyn rubbed her palm on her face in frustration. She wanted to scream out loud.
‘The only problem in my life is that no matter how much I try to be indifferent, my heart always melts. Compassion is my biggest rival and I always end up losing in front of it.’
“Fine, but you will keep your mouth shut. Don’t you dare anything to Dad or else I will bang your head on the steering wheel.”
A smile broke on his lips as relief washed over him.
“Sure.”
Passing him a glare, Evelyn took her father and they both headed to climb inside the black Mustang which Dylan had sent for them.
But Mr. Clarke could feel something fishy in the air. He kept quiet and continued staring at Evelyn with skeptical eyes. She tried to ignore it in the beginning but when he didn’t remove his gaze, she took it as her cue to explain everything.
“Actually Dad, there have been some tension going on in the company that’s why one of my business partner send this car and Hunter for me for protection. I didn’t know about it but I can’t reject it too. It’s for the good.”
Mr. Clarke gaped in shock, “But why do you need protection? Evie, don’t lie. Tell me have there been any attacks on you?” He spoke firmly.
Evelyn was gobsmacked. How in the world he found about that?
Hunter who was driving, sensed the tension in the air. He snuck a glance at Evelyn through the rearview mirror. She looked scared.
He decided to intervene.
“No Sir. Actually, my Boss is the richest man in America so obviously the more fame and wealth, the more danger. And since they both are working together so Mrs. Clarke is equally prone to be attacked by his rivals that’s why he sent a security team for protection. He was worried for her safety.” He answered with a sweet smile.
Evelyn’s jaw ticked but Mr. Clarke sighed in relief.
“Oh, that’s so nice of your Boss. What is his name?” He was delighted to know that someone cared so much for her daughter.
“Dyl-”
“Xander Knight.” Evelyn quickly cut him off.
Hunter’s eyes bulged out of his sockets while Mr. Clarke was surprised after hearing it.
“Xander, Dylan’s friend?” He inquired; Evelyn bobbed her head.
“Yes. He is a very successful businessman Dad and we are working together on a project. You know how much Xander cares about me.”
“Of course, I know it dear.” Mr. Clarke was amped up with the news. He knew about Xander and how much he had looked after her Princess when she was suffering in that hell.
But soon mischievous buzzed inside him. “So, you two are together now?”
He wiggled his brows. Evelyn gasped as she didn’t expect that coming. Her cheeks turned red in response. He smirked at her flushed face.
“My Princess is blushing. So, the Knight finally got his damsel?”
Evelyn let out a strained smile, she felt bad as she was just using Xander as a pretext to hide the real demon. She tried to dodge the question multiple times but Mr. Clarke continued grilling her about her relationship with Xander.
“Mmm, tell me, Evie? Are you and Xander-God!!”
The car was suddenly stopped with a screeching sound as Hunter treaded on the brakes. The impact kicked Evelyn and her father forward making them collide with the front seats.
“HUNTER!!!”
Evelyn shouted while Hunter stared head, his hands gripping the steering wheel tightly as he panted heavily.
“W-We reached. Sorry, a dog came out of nowhere and I have to stop.” He justified himself but the aghast look on his face said something else.
Evelyn harshly pulled off the seat belt and alighted the vehicle.
“Where’s the dog? I see no one here.” She scowled and hurried to get to Mr. Clarke who had still not reeled back from the shock.
“Must be a cat then,” Hunter replied and jumped off the car.
Evelyn was bubbling in rage but ignoring him, she focused his attention on Mr. Clarke and went inside the hotel.
Hunter just stared at their backs helplessly. He turned his gaze back to the Mustang, dread pooling inside his stomach.
“Oh, my God. What will I do?”
His eyes held a horrified look as he continued gazing at the car.
“What the hell were you thinking idiot?”
Hunter was startled hearing that angry tone. He tilted his neck only to find Evelyn glowering at him.
“Ma’am, how come you’re here? Who is with your father then?” He was bewildered as he just saw them leaving.
‘Did she just teleport? Fuck Hunter, what are you thinking?’
The thing was that Evelyn had made her father sit in the lounge as she needed to confront Hunter for the stunt he pulled.
“That’s none of your concern. I told you to keep your mouth shut during the ride but no, you have to defy. Just see what happened. I have to drag Xander in between and-”
“And you committed a grave mistake by doing that Ma’am. The car has Bluetooth connectivity. Boss heard everything.”
Hunter cried making Evelyn freeze on the spot.
He listened. Her heart skipped a beat.
But she didn’t drop the tough act and spat, “Then why did you even mention his name? You always foment troubles.”
She was frightened but didn’t reveal it on his face. She just wanted to reach home soon so that she can escape his clutches but by mentioning Xander, she herself invited him to pay her a visit.
“Yeah, but what next Ma’am? You will incur his wrath. Boss would haven’t been pleased after hearing his name from your mouth.” Hunter continued scaring her.
Evelyn shot him a stink eye.
“I am not scared of him. Care about yourself and stop-”
She was interrupted by the ringing of his phone. Hunter quickly fished out it from his pocket but Evelyn snatched it.
His eyes widened.
“N-No Ma’am-”
“Natty huh? Let’s see what your wife has to speak to you.” Evelyn smirked and picked up his phone. But what she heard next left her shaken.
“Baby, guess what? Your gf is in New York.”
Evelyn ended the call and looked at Hunter with blazing eyes who was drenched in sweat.
“Liar.”
Hunter nervously smiled at her accusation.
“We are about to get married and we are going to have our first child soon. I will invite you to our wedding.” He giggled.
Evelyn tossed his phone on his chest and growled, “Stop your nonsense. Tell Dylan that I am booking another hotel. I don’t need your damn protection. Instead, I need to protect myself and my family from you all. You nearly killed me today.”
“That wouldn’t happen again. I am sorry Ma’am but I assure you I can protect you with my life-”
“First learn how to drive.” Evelyn rudely cut him off, “And don’t you dare do anything stupid or I will really call the cops.”
Saying that she headed inside leaving Hunter in a bind.
“Ma’am, please I have old parents. It’s the truth.” He continued shouting from behind but Evelyn paid no heed and disappeared into the building.
Hunter watched her with an open mouth as she booked a room in another hotel that was just beside the one Dylan had booked for her and went inside the building with Mr. Clarke without sparing him another glance.
“Damn it. Now what will I do?”
Hunter was peeved. He ruffled his hair in frustration but soon despair spread on his face.
“Boss will kill me today,” he spoke with a sad sigh but soon his train of thoughts was interrupted by the ringing of his phone.
A shiver ran down his spine when he checked the caller ID. But if he delays then it would cost his life.
“It’s a do-or-die.”
Taking a deep breath, he collected himself and swiped the green button.
“Yes, Boss.”
“Where is she?” A deep rumbling sound echoed in his ears. Hunter felt suffocated as his voice broached no place for an excuse and demanded a crystal-clear answer.
“She booked another hotel. I am sorry Boss but Ma’am was angry and wasn’t listening to me.” He bleated, wishing to die at the moment.
But his breath got caught in his throat when Dylan without saying anything hung up on him. Hunter removed the earpiece and stared at the screen with apprehension.
Lines of worry creased his forehead because he had a hunch about the storm that was on the horizon.
The iciness in Dylan’s voice could even freeze hell. And that only happens when he is in ultra-angry mode. Xander’s mention would have definitely charred him to his bone.
And as expected the beast was on his way gushing past the cars while driving like a lunatic to punish the perpetrator.
