His wrath
Mr. Clarke studied Evelyn silently while she make up the bed for him, arranging the cushions just the way he prefers.
The man was worried. No matter how much Evelyn try to assure him that she was fine but he had seen the unwanted fear in her eyes every time Hunter mentioned something. She even abruptly switched the hotel. Bit by bit the girl was only turning him more dubious and Mr. Clarke couldn’t help but mull over her bizarre behavior.
He wasn’t born yesterday. He was well aware that Evelyn was hiding something from him. Something which needs to be addressed but for his sake, she was keeping it under wraps.
“There you go. Come, Dad,” Evelyn beamed and headed to help him get on the bed. Mr. Clarke simply obeyed her but his gaze was riveted on her exhausted face.
“I will order something for you.” She spoke and turn around to leave but was stopped when he clasped her wrist.
“Come sit beside me for a while.”
Evelyn gave him a sweet smile and slowly removed his hand, “Dad, first let me order something for you and then we both can chat-”
“We need to talk, now.” He cut her harshly as his expression turned grim.
Evelyn gulped, she lost the courage to defy and quietly perched beside him.
Mr. Clarke analyzed her. She had her eyes lowered and was continuously playing with her fingers, one of her habits when she was nervous and scared.
The man inhaled a deep breath before speaking, “Listen, Evie. I know that I am solely responsible for widening the differences between us but I can’t no longer keep silent. I know you don’t trust me but still, I want you to share your problems with me.” He spoke and enveloped her hands while Evelyn turned maudlin. Her vision turned blurry as tears circled in her eyes.
“Dad, I...“, she sniffed unable to find the correct words to speak, “I have gone through a lot and I don’t know how to tell you that. But to be honest”
She then looked up at him. A fat dollop of tear rolled down her cheek that turned his gaze soft, “I want to keep you away from all these. Trust me I can handle it but please don’t ask anything.” She pleaded.
Mr. Clarke was hurt, he lost his trust. That was a heart-wrenching fact for a father. Although he badly wanted her to open up to him, he realized that he needs to give her time.
“If that’s what you want then all right, I won’t bother you. But promise me that if things go out of control, you need to confide in me. I hate seeing you suffer while keeping all the secrets and problems to yourself. At least share them with Xander. He knows you well.”
Evelyn dropped her gaze. Her father’s words compelled her to contemplate.
She wouldn’t be able to deal with Dylan alone. She doesn’t love him but he wouldn’t stop until he has her. Evelyn realized that if she keeps pushing everyone away then she will never be able to save herself from him. Moreover, by doing that she’ll be only locking all the doors which could give her freedom.
“You’re right, Dad,” she spoke, her eyes were still staring at naught.
Mr. Clarke smiled and caressed her hair. His smile soon dropped when a question crossed his mind. Clearing his throat, he hesitantly asked her.
“By the way, has he ever troubled you?”
Evelyn immediately shot her eyes at him, completely shocked by that question. She knew to whom he was referring.
“No.”
She thanked her stars as her voice came out firm and confident.
Evelyn couldn’t take the risk of sharing this news with her father especially when his health wasn’t favorable. He was already entangled in a guilt trip and she would never give him another reason to loathe himself.
But his silence befuddled her. Evelyn snuck a glance at him, she was surprised to see him despondent.
“What happened Dad?”
Mr. Clarke sighed heavily and shifted his eyes to her.
“I know I shouldn’t Evie but I pity Dylan and his family. When Mr. Black died, there was no one to comfort his bereaved wife and son. I heard that Dylan was kicked off by Mr. Black, he wanted to punish him for his sins but he couldn’t elude the karma too. The old man died in prison. His wife lost her mind as she was abandoned by everyone when she needed them the most. That list included Dylan too as he left her behind and not for once came to check up on her. I am happy that God is punishing everyone who wronged you, Evie but still, I can’t help but blame myself. Because it’s a fact that all this could have been avoided if I hadn’t married you off to that monster.” His voice was laced with regret.
Evelyn couldn’t see him like this. She knew that it was her mother who was the main culprit but she doesn’t want to waste her time on this issue anymore.
Putting up a smile, she squeezed his hand and wiped his tear.
“Let bygones be bygones, Dad. You only told me that instead of scratching the scars of the past and remembering where we went wrong, it’s better to turn over a new leaf and think about the future. It was my fate and now I intend to change it. And I will only succeed if I have you at my side to embolden me.” She spoke.
Mr. Clarke was moved by her words. He nodded and smiled at Evelyn which she returned gladly.
*****
Evelyn was lounging on the sofa with her eyes closed. She was in the drawing room while her father was asleep in the bedroom. All the hectic events of the day had frazzled her nerves and now her body demanded a long and peaceful nap.
Suddenly there was a loud bang on the door. Evelyn jumped; her heart lurched in her throat.
“Who is that?”
Lost in thoughts, she was busy figuring out the intruder when there was another hard knock. Evelyn deterred to invite that trouble inside but she knew it wouldn’t stop until and unless she checks it.
With shaky steps, she reached for the door and unlocked it. Her fingers trembled as she twisted the knob but before she could open it, the door was kicked open making her stagger back in shock.
“Who the fuc-”
She screamed but the words were left hanging.
There stood the raging Mafia with his eyes burning holes in her face.
Evelyn was appalled by his ghastly appearance. The ridges of his neck stood prominently while his harsh breathing echoed in the empty room. Every cell of her body buzzed with tremor the moment her eyes clapped on his bulging veins. Wild, unadulterated rage was flowing inside them at such a rigorous pace that she could feel it.
His blazing eyes held her captive. No words were exchanged but Evelyn flinched back in shock when Dylan took a large step in her direction. She felt so small and powerless in front of his authoritative and forbidding aura. His one glare held the power to freeze Hell.
Evelyn continued moving back when the thought of her father who was drowned in his power nap in the bedroom struck her.
“Dylan, stop. Dad is here.” She whispered in a meek tone while raising her palms in front of him to stop him.
And as if luck was on her side today, Dylan halted. A small wisp of relief trickled inside her when he diverted his stormy eyes from her and glanced at the room that was behind her.
Evelyn was delighted. He would definitely retreat now, she thought.
But her hopes were shattered like glass when Dylan advanced toward her and gripped her hand. Before she could understand he dragged her outside while locking the door.
*****
Her breath was caught in her throat when her small frame collided against the hard surface of the wall. Evelyn hissed in pain but Dylan didn’t give her time and crowded in on her. Shock seized her senses when he leaned dangerously closer to her face with his palms on the wall beside her head. He had her caged to a corner.
Evelyn immediately placed her hands on his chest and tried pushing him but that only worsened his mood.
“If I wasn’t angry earlier, I am hella pissed now.”
His deep virile tone had her insides shaking in dread. Grabbing her hands, he pinned them above her head turning her eyes to the size of saucers.
“What makes you think that I would sit on my hands while you go around praising that piece of shit?” He suddenly blared making her jump in response.
But Evelyn composed herself quickly. She was ready to lock horns with him today, for how long she has to handle him and his sick way of exercising control over her. It needs to be stopped.
Shooting him a glare, she snapped back.
“Because I don’t want Dad to know that you’re back on harassing me. At least the thought of Xander saving me keeps him happy.”
Evelyn grated out, thinking that it would for sure rile him but what she didn’t expect was him to smirk at her words.
She stiffened like a rock when Dylan tilted his head and dug his face into her nape. Her eyes fluttered as she without even knowing savored his thick rich cologne of cedar and pine wood. It was enchanting.
“You must be a fool to think that a Mafia is so sensitive to give a shit what the world thinks of him. Baby, I don’t give a fuck, you can appraise Xander all you want.” He stipulated with an undertone of mockery.
His hot breath caused goosebumps all over her skin. Evelyn furrowed her brows.
“Then why are you angry?” Words on their own flew out of her mouth.
Dylan ignored her question and gazed at her lips which were coated with peach. She had changed into a sky-blue knee-length frock with nude flats and looked adorable. Her brown locks were pinned behind her back neatly. She was dressed simply but elegantly.
Pinching her chin, he rubbed his thumb on her fuller lower lip. He was caressing it so tenderly that she couldn’t help but quiver. A deep shade of red coated her cheeks watching his intense gaze that was dead set on her lips.
“Because by saying his name, you stained your lips and I hate that.”
Dylan suddenly gritted with clenched teeth leaving her shocked.
Evelyn fisted his shirt when he pulled her lower lip with his thumb. Her face contoured in pain but her heart stopped when he ducked his head forward. His tongue slithered over the seam of her lips.
She mewled like a cat and tried pushing him away.
“Don’t, it requires a proper clean.” Dylan snubbed her and joined their foreheads making her lean her head back on the wall.
Very carefully, he then slipped his tongue inside her mouth and caressed the center of her passion. Evelyn was horrified when he started mauling her lips while sucking her tongue occasionally. His anger was evident in that hungry and passionate kiss.
Evelyn was flustered when people quickly rushed past them while stifling their smiles. A group of girls giggled while watching the man who had a girl plastered on the wall in awe. Dylan was kissing her with utmost lust, tasting every single corner of her mouth. The loud sound of wet smooches rang in the hallway adding to her shame.
Dylan finally pulled when he felt her getting out of breath. Breathing heavily, he then rubbed the pad of his thumb all over her rose petals caressing them lovingly. Evelyn tried pushing him but he put whole his weight on her as he leaned forward making her glued to the wall.
“Now they are perfectly cleaned.” He spoke with a wide smile gracing his lips.
Evelyn was furious. Giving a harsh blow to his chest, she pushed him and slapped him hard across his cheek.
It was so brutal that the sound echoed in the hallway. She heard a few shocking gasps considering they were not alone but she didn’t give a damn about it.
“You’re pathetic. You’re a piece of shit, not him. No one had repulsed me more than you, not even Ryan and Muller.” She shouted in his face.
Dylan was deeply hurt. Her every word slashed her heart into two but he didn’t budge and remained in the same pose until Evelyn lunged on him and grabbed his collars.
“You’re a disgrace. Claim to love me huh? When your own parents never loved you then how can you expect me to give you a place in my heart? Your mother never saw you as more than a money-making machine. She was obsessed with your wealth and your father, the poor man died in regret and disappointment. You not only ruined my life but is liable to destroy your parents’ life too. You’re nothing but a troublemaker, an omen whose one touch brings destruction in one’s peaceful life.”
Evelyn continued snarling not even caring about the broken look on his face.
Her words sucked the air out of his lungs but Evelyn was still far away from completely battering him until he has nothing left.
Jerking him like dirt, she cleared the angry tears with the back of her palm and glared at him.
“Stay away from me. A man who can kill his father and snatch his mother’s sanity is no less than a devil in human form. I have suffered your wrath enough but not anymore. I don’t want you to destroy my happy life and create more trouble. Mr. Dylan Black, if you have the slightest bit of shame then don’t you ever show your face to me.” She screamed out loud and ran away.
Dylan remained rooted on the spot. People who were watching the drama also scurried away but not before throwing disgusting glances and scornful remarks his way. Evelyn was successful in changing their opinion.
“Boss?”
Hunter rushed to Dylan while panting heavily. He was downstairs waiting for Dylan but the commotion upstairs pulled him to check up on the situation.
His heart clenched at the sight of his Boss whose gaze was cast downwards. There was a profound melancholy spread all over his face but his jaw dropped on noticing a single tear sliding down his left cheek.
“B-Boss,” Hunter whispered as he padded towards him but Dylan made no move. He was heartbroken. He came here to seek comfort but what Evelyn said tore his soul.
Without uttering a word, Dylan turned around and left while Hunter gazed at his back helplessly.
