Oh, that bitch, I should have known
One could tell she had been waiting for that call, she really wanted to be sure they hadn't cut off each other's head.
She didn't even allow the phone ring for the second time, it almost fell off from her, that is to show how eager she was, to know what was going on.
"Why are you not at the hospital yet, I just called mother, and she said you haven't arrived"
"Oh yes, I am actually on my way there, I first dropped by at the hospital where my husband is to give him food" She replied, but then she felt like she shouldn't have said that.
Saying 'my husband' sounded odd to her, but she couldn't help it, she was already used to referring to him as that, and unless he feels she was no longer his wife, she wouldn't stop.
"Well get going, I don't want her alone at the hospital"
He was about to end the call, but Amanda couldn't miss the chance to put her heart at ease, she just had to ask.
"How is it going over there, hope you guys are not fighting?
Maxwell smiled knowing she must have been worried, but he wouldn't even dare to fight the man in front of him, he wasn't the Goodluck he had know years ago, he was a different man now, and he commanded lots of respect, Maxwell could t even tell what changed about him since he looked the same to him, but he was surely different, in a good way though.
"Don't worry, I wouldn't dare do that, I am still suffering from the one I did, I need him to forgive me first so that we can start the fight again"
What!
Her brother couldn't be thinking of fighting.
"Just kidding kiddo, now run along, will call back later"
She was happy he sounded okay, she knew he was joking, she just didn't want to take the chance. She quickly rushed out to find the taxi already waiting for her.
Maxwell hadn't said much to Goodluck as they sat waiting for their order, he really didn't know where to start or how to start, they had greeted casually when he arrived at their meeting point, and he had asked about work and business, but that was it.
He had even made all those joke over the phone with his sister to Lighten his Friend's mood, but he focused on the newspaper in front of him pretending not to pay attention, though Maxwell knows he isn't reading a thing. If he was reading, he would have moved his eyes at least, but his eyes have been on the same spot since he picked the paper up.
He was not going to go easy on him, Maxwell was sure of that, he had to clear the air, and since Goodluck wasn't talking much, he had to do the talking.
He cleared his throat for the uptenth time before finding his lost voice.
"Em, Goodluck"
He would have called him Goody, but he felt odd about it, it sounded strange like he had never uttered them before. Though this was the first time since they became friends that he was calling him Goodluck. It also made Goodluck look up at him, dropping the paper on the table to face him.
His gaze on him was daring, he could see the scar on the side of his neck, he knew that was something he inflicted, but he quickly looked away.
Now was the time for him to say something, now that he was looking at him, he could not continue keeping quiet, he needed to try and be a man and apologise, even though, he feels Goodluck is also supposed to apologise to him.
"I am sorry, I really am, I have been trying to reach you all these years, but you were unreachable.
What I did was unacceptable, it was wrong and I have no excuse. Please forgive me, even though you hurt me too, I mean you went behind my back and started dating my baby sister, she was only a little girl, she knows nothing, you exposed her to things she didn't know, and shouldn't know. (He paused, and looked away, and then looked back at him) If you were in my shoes, what will you do? He was asking, but Goodluck didn't seem to have any answer for him.
Goodluck wasn't expecting him to go all the way apologising like he really did something wrong. He really wasn't that angry with Maxwell, he understood him perfectly on the contrary, he was only trying to protect his sister, who wouldn't protect their loved ones, he had always known that if he had a sister, he would protect her with his life from Heartbreakers like himself.
When he was sure Maxwell had nothing more to say, he cleared his throat, and still commanding so much respect, he started.
"I should be the one apologising, eventhough I already did, I apologized to you, that same day, but you were only Interested in having my head on a platter.
I hold no grudge against you, seriously, you were only protecting your sister, I didn't have a good reputation, So your actions were expected. Though I was trying, I let go of all those girls claiming to be my girlfriend, some even blamed you for it, but I was doing it to be worthy of Amanda. I didn't plan to fall for her, I swear, I tried many times to stop myself from feeling what I was feeling, but it only grew. I knew I couldn't tell you, you would never understand, and I never defiled her.
This was the second time Maxwell was hearing this, and now he seemed to believe it which only made him feel more guilty.
"Still I am sorry, you were my friend, and I should have been mature and listened to you, what if I had killed you that day?
"You were angry Max, you needed to let it out so I let you vent, it was a natural thing to do at that time.
Goodluck was already tired of the apologies, he wanted to be friends with him again if Max was up for it. So he continued to change the sobber mood they were in.
"You know, I have been meaning to ask you. how did you find out about us?
Max wasn't expecting him to ask, but he suspected he wanted to lighten up the mood so he played along, and answered honestly.
"Linda of course, she had not stopped blaming me for your breakup with her, when she saw me, she told me I sent my sister to seduce you, and that was why you broke up with her"
"Oh that bitch, I should have known"
They both smiled, but Maxwell looked away immediately the moment their eyes met. He wasn't sure why he was acting like a girl, that was being wooed but he was sure not enjoying his new found attitude.
