Cold And Distant.
"Huh?"
I looked at Linda, confused. Her question kind of collided with my thought and set me off balance. I felt lost for a moment.
Linda shook her head and waved her hand. "Don't worry," her lips curved into a sad smile, "you don't have to clarify anything to me if you find it too personal to talk about it."
For a moment, I forgot I was assumed to be married to Mr Lawson. I didn't even expect her to believe the baked lie and it baffled me more that Mr Lawson was acting along with the pretense.
What the hell was he up to?
I wetted my lips and said, "Em… We actually aren't married," I confessed to her.
I wasn't good at pretending so she would have seen through my act if I played along to Mr Lawson's ridiculous game.
She dropped her fingers from her ring and gaped at me. "You aren't married to him?"
I smiled sheepishly and nodded. "Yes."
She furrowed her brows as she connected the knots.
"Then, why did he claim you were married to him?"
"I don't know," I shrugged. "He is a little complicated."
She chuckled at my statement. "You are right about that. This is my first time meeting him, but I used to hear about him."
I smiled and focused my attention on her ring. "That's a nice ring," I complimented.
She smiled and looked at her hand. "Sure, it is." She looked up at me, "I actually picked it myself."
"Why?"
"He has a poor taste in jewelry."
I laughed.
She showed me the ring. "Do you think I picked the best?"
I nodded as I observed it. "Yes, it's beautiful."
After a while, Linda went to meet her Fiancé and I sat alone in the lobby. Whatever Mr Lawson was doing up there wasn't my business so I didn't want to go back.
I brought out my phone to call my Mom. I was calling her number when I felt it. Someone was looking at me. I turned and saw a man at the other end of the lobby staring in my direction. He sat calmly at a booth with a magazine in his hands. I couldn't see his face because of the shades he wore.
I acted oblivious and continued pressing my phone. I couldn't fully concentrate on my task because my whole body was fully aware of the man's hard stare. His eyes followed my every movement and I started to realize my assumptions were actually true. Someone was indeed stalking me and it might not be Mr Lawson.
I darted my eyes across his direction and stood up. He wouldn't harm me in the midst of people so it was best I go back to where Mr Lawson was having his meeting.
I moved out of the booth and halted. I couldn't go back to the hotel restaurant. There was a high probability that the man might actually follow me and I didn't want to be stuck in a lift with a creep like him.
I dared to look in his direction again and noticed he wasn't no longer there. His disappearance did nothing to relieve me because it made him more dangerous since he left without a trace. I was standing close to the entrance and I wasn't aware of when he walked past.
I let out a shaky breath and forced myself to remain calm. I quickly called my Mom to know of her whereabouts and check on Zoe. After the call, I sat and watched as time ticked away. My Mom and Zoe were already at home; Zoe was even asleep. So, I had nothing to be worried about.
Soon, Mr Lawson and the others came downstairs. He was a little shocked to see me in the lobby, but he didn't say anything. It was then I noticed the man next to Mr Fox, lo and behold, it was the same man who gave me the creep earlier.
He turned away from Mr Fox and looked at me. "I believe you are Mr Lawson's wife," Then, he stretched out his hand towards me. "It's nice to meet you."
I glanced at Mr Lawson. I needed a way out and he was the only person I could look up to at the moment. Luckily, he moved forward and grabbed my hand before I could shake the creepy man's hand.
He pulled me closer to him and looked at the man grimly. "Let's call it a night, Dave." Then, he turned to Mr Fox. "I will think about the deal and get back to you."
Suddenly, Linda stepped forward and hugged me. "I will love it if you can come to the wedding, I will send the invitation card to Mr Lawson."
"I will if I have free time," I promised.
"All right, I hope to see you." She said and walked out with her Fiancé.
I darted my gaze to the man who was still standing before me. I bit my bottom lip. My heart throbbed and my legs buckled. I didn't understand why I felt that way, but I needed to get out of his presence before I lost my mind.
I quickly held Mr Lawson's wheelchair and we left him alone without bidding him goodbye. When we entered the car, my whole nerves calmed down, but I was still bothered by Mr Lawson's act from earlier.
I couldn't help, but ask. "When they addressed me as Mrs Lawson, why didn't you deny it?"
He looked at me, eyes cold and distant. "Does it bother you to be my wife?"
