About The Kiss.
When I got to the mansion the next day, I made up my mind that I wouldn't talk to him. After all, he preferred a mute caretaker! I went to the kitchen to get a bottle of water. Sheila was sitting at the kitchen island with a bar of KitKat chocolate in her hand.
She uttered a sigh of relief when she saw me. "Oh, Annie!" She stood up and pulled me in for a tight embrace. "I thought he fired you. You didn't come back with him last night."
She pulled back.
"No, he didn't fire me," I said. "But why will he fire me?"
I wondered if it was because of the kiss, but Sheila doesn't know about that, does she?
She looked at me with bewildered eyes. "You burnt his expensive jacket, remember?"
"Oh."
Phew, I actually thought she knew about the kiss.
I slouched to the fridge and took a bottle of water. After drinking to my fullness, I turned back to look at her.
"Has he ever fired someone for burning his clothes?" I inquired.
She pursed her lips. "Hmm, I'm not sure." Her face lit up as she remembered something. "Oh yes! Mrs Gretchen. That woman burnt just his tie and even got him a new one. But Mr Lawson fired her as soon as he heard about it!" She sulked. "Gretchen was such a sweet woman; she always avoided trouble and assisted me in the kitchen." Suddenly, Sheila smiled. "Lucky for her, she had gotten another job at a household in Brooklyn!"
Out of everything Sheila said, I only understood one thing: I had to be more careful unless Mr Lawson would fire me! God knows I couldn't risk getting fired.
So, I decided I would apologize to him after he had calmed down.
In the afternoon, I went to the master suite to apologize. I took in a deep breath and paced the door. For some reason, I felt I was stooping too low. He had also offended me so why should I feel the need to apologize to him. I exhaled deeply, calming myself. It was because I had something to lose and he didn't, I realized.
With a little courage, I knocked on the door.
The door automatically opened and Mr Lawson looked at me. He was lying on his king-size bed, wearing a gray shirt and joggers that blended with the grayness of his eyes.
He groaned. "I've told you countless times that it has a doorbell."
I looked at the door and noticed the doorbell. I wasn't used to houses that had doorbells so I haven't made it a habit of ringing it.
I walked inside and the door closed.
I started. "Em…"
He cocked his eyebrow at me. "What do you want?"
"Em... I um..."
How do I start?
I checked if he was in a bad mood. He actually looked relaxed… too relaxed. His very short curls were damp and it shimmered with water. A drop of water escaped from his hair and ran down his face. He raised a hand and brushed it off with a towel. He dabbed his hair and put the towel around his neck.
Without looking at me, he said. "Are you here to stare at me?"
His words draw me out of my trance. "Huh?"
"Annie, what do you want?"
You can do it, I groomed myself. Just tell him you are sorry and leave.
"I'm sorry," I said. "Um... I mean I came to apprecia—No. I came to apologize for ruining your Jacket. I was on a call so I didn't know when it got burnt."
What?!
I just revealed I was on a call when I was meant to be working! I had given him another reason to fire me!
I have no choice but to tell him about Zoe's illness.
"Well... um…" I hesitated. "Actually, I was talking to my daughter. She isn't feeling well. Right now, she is in the hospital."
"Is she getting better?" He sounded concerned.
"Yes!" I nodded. "The doctor said she needed rest."
"You can have the day off," he said. "You should take care of your child, it is of no use to me if you'll keep ruining things."
"Really?!"
He sighed. "Don't make me change my mind."
"Thanks," I pointed at the door. "So, I will be leaving now."
I was walking out of the room when I heard his voice. "And lastly; If you are truly sorry, you have to follow me to the boutique to get a new Jacket."
I turned. "Alright, sir."
He looked up and his gray orbs met mine. "Also, I'm sorry for regarding you as a whore," he added, "and kissing you without your consent."
I blinked. I wanted him to apologize, but I didn't think he would.
Without saying anything, I nodded and left his room.
