PERSONAL DIARY
.
At Marie’s Home
.
Just as soon as Delilah rushed to open the door when the doorbell rang, she was feeling satisfied to a different level. That was only because she read Marie’s diary and had a point or two to put her down by confronting her. Even though Marie was supposedly her step-daughter, Delilah never treated her such. She had an internal grudge against her for whatever reason that played in her head.
Her heart was throbbing with excitement. Delilah was a mean lady for wanting to trouble the little girl intentionally. Marie had never interfered in anything that her step-mother did and yet her step-mother had nothing else to do other than not just interfering in Marie’s doings but also spoiling things for her either by talking about her to Mr. Jones behind her back or by being successful in her filthy plans to make Marie look bad in front of everyone.
The minute she opened the door to welcome both the girls inside the house, Marie ran to the bathroom to relieve herself because she had been controlling it since the time she was in the market with Rebecca. Delilah got confused on whether she should react the way that she wanted to or not because she did not have much time with Marie running to her room, which was another mystery for her on why her step-daughter was running to go inside.
In times like these it is very difficult to understand why a person is behaving in a particular way. We do not think of the logical reasons which could be behind it, and neither do we show faith in the person and accept such reactions. Even when the person is in a rush, we expect him or her to answer our queries and clear our doubts before he or she chooses to react. The worst is that we want him or her to give clarifications to the way they have chosen to respond.
Delilah kept herself controlled by keeping her mouth shut only to understand what had happened to Marie and why she rushed to her room inside. She looked at Rebecca and raised her eyebrows. That was to give her a signal of wanting to know the reason for what was happening, so that she would let her know what actually happened to Marie.
"She wanted to pee," Rebecca told her mother.
After hearing the reason why Marie ran straight into the room, Delilah felt a little calmer and continued to feel excited because as soon as Marie came out of her room, she would get a chance to question Marie about her diary which was lying on her bed mentioning some love-related feelings for another girl.
Moreover, the cheap thrill in her was for Mr. Jones to know about it and scold his own daughter in front of Delilah because she absolutely enjoyed it the most. When Rebecca was loved and Marie wasn’t, there was nothing better for her. She wanted to always separate a father and a daughter for her own selfish reasons so that her biological daughter Rebecca could get a better place than Marie in the house.
“Come here, Marie. Sit in front of me,” Delilah said on seeing Marie walking into the living room where she was sitting with Rebecca.
“What happened?” Marie asked.
“Come here, and sit,” Delilah ordered.
As soon as Marie sat down in the lounge chair which was kept adjacent to the couch her step-mother was seated on, Delilah questioned, “What is happening with you?”
“Nothing as such,” Marie replied spontaneously.
She hated it when her step-mother interfered in anything which she did. So, she always answered any question asked by Delilah in the shortest possible way and kept it very generic.
“What was on your bed?” Delilah asked upfront.
Only because Marie was unable to understand why Delilah had asked such a question, she replied, “What was on my bed? Nothing was on it.”
“The diary in which something was written,” Delilah pointed out.
“That is my personal diary,” Marie shouted.
“Exactly. What have you written in it?”
“That should not be your concern because it is my diary,” Marie responded by stressing out on ‘my’.
“You have written dirty things in it,” Delilah mentioned, and that was enough for Marie to lose her cool. She immediately got up from where she was seated and came in front of her step-mom. The pace of her steps explained the way that she was feeling, which could not have been described otherwise, but it genuinely felt as if someone had stripped her naked in public.
That feeling was pretty obvious because she was not a very social person and lived in a very reserved way. Marie wrote about her feelings in her diary, which was read by Delilah, and she was being judgmental too. That is why she called it ‘dirty’ without even letting Marie explain her side for what was actually written in it.
Marie not only felt as if she was completely naked in front of her step-mom and Rebecca, but she also started feeling bad about being cheated on. She felt her diary on the bed with the trust that nobody would interfere in her things because everyone at home deserves at least some kind of privacy no matter how little it is.
Not only did she expect some kind of privacy in her life at home, but she also placed her trust in her step-mother whom she called family for not reading her diary. Marie had not even gone out for a long time. She had gone to the market that was close by only to pick up some candies for home because her step-sister Rebecca used to eat a lot of them, and the ones that were at home were already over.
She was unable to decide how her reaction should be that felt a little normal and did not feel impulsive at all but firm enough to make things very clear to Delilah that she did not have any right to read the diary which belonged to Marie. All that she wanted to say to her stepmother was that she shouldn't be crossing the basic boundaries which are set at home for all the family members to get enough space to themselves, and she wanted to yell this out to her.
Once she felt a little normal, she said, “That is my personal diary, mom.”
Once she completed that sentence, she took a deep breath as she was controlling her anger, and she added, “You should not want to know what I write, and you definitely have no right to judge the things which I write in it because it is MY DIARY.”
The way Marie completed her last sentence made it very clear that the notebook was her possession, and Delilah had no right whatsoever to say and do anything which related to it. In the time that they were having that debate, Mr. Jones reached home and the headlights of his car flashed through the main window of the room.
To get out of that unwanted situation, Marie got up and walked to the main door to open it for her dad. Mr. Jones walked in and Marie hugged him tight. She then said, “Mom read my personal diary.."
