The Blood Alpha
Alexandra
Stolen glances bore into me, curiosity swirling through the room about who the omega hanging off of the Blood Alpha is. Even the humans seem to be intrigued by the two of us. It's not the attention that makes me uneasy though, but rather the pair of cold eyes narrowing in on me from the corner of the club as Alpha Liam takes my hand in his.
This thing that Alpha Liam and I have is complicated. But I’m okay with complicated, I’ve lived complicated my whole life. The only difference is, I’m done living by the rules set for me by everyone else. I’m living for me now. I’m living for the present. If that leads me to my death, at least I’ll have lived with some shred of happiness in this life.
I attempt to sneak a glance at the chilling stare across the club, but they quickly disappear, leaving me to wonder if it's just my imagination. Whatever was in that fizzy pink drink Layla gave me has left me feeling dizzy, but I don't mind. I wasn't sure if Alpha Liam would even care that I was talking to another man, but seeing his possessiveness come out sparked something feral inside of me — something I don't want to fight.
Alpha Liam extends his hand towards the car door, allowing me to enter the sleek black sports car first, before he returns to the driver's seat. The rich aroma of fine leather wafts through the car, and the dashboard gleams, recently polished, as if it were brand new. I gasp when I feel his large hand on my thigh. He doesn’t look over at me, keeping his other hand firmly planted on the steering wheel and his eyes on the road as we merge onto the highway. The silence between us is comfortable. But, his clenched jaw tells me there’s something bothering him. Something he’s itching to say.
I push the thoughts running in my mind away and try to keep my heart from racing, focusing on the road as the dim glow of the city lights dances against the tinted car windows. Soft music plays on the radio, but it doesn’t do much to quiet the loud roar of the engine.
He clears his throat, a subtle tension in the air as if he's debating whether or not he wants to say something. “I can feel your wolf…” he tells me, confusion muddling in his voice. I press my lips together in a tight line, knowing there’s a question soon following.
“She’s fierce. What’s her name?” He asks, treading carefully.
“Anna,” I reply, not sure if I want to diverge any more information.
“When was your last shift?” He questions, his blue eyes probing into mine. It’s then I realize he’s not going to drop the topic. He knows more than he leads on and he wants the answer. I struggle with my own thoughts, unable to come up with a reasonable explanation with Anna whining in my head.
“15,” I replied dryly, embarrassed to look at him.
“15 days?!” He shrieks, and I shake my head in response, refusing to look at him.
“15… 15 weeks?!” He exclaims, and I feel the car swerve slightly onto the shoulder and back into the left lane of the highway.
I heave a sigh, he’s given me no reason not to trust him. Even if he forces me into a slave, I’d rather service his needs over Alpha Axton’s. Although I doubt that would happen. He treats his pack with fairness, and they all seem to swoon over him.
“I was 15 years old when I had my last shift. Happy? Drop it now,” I snarled, shifting to the edge of the leather seat, so his hand falls off of my lap.
Deafening silence takes over between the two of us. I can hear his breathing loud and reckless — he’s angry. I wonder if he’s angry at me for not telling him sooner. Now that he knows I can’t shift, maybe he won’t see any use for me in his pack.
I surrender to the uncomfort now looming between us. I’m not stupid, I know I have nothing to offer him. “I’ll gather my things, I’ll be gone by the morning,” I tell him, feeling my heart crumble into a million tiny pieces. Anna shrieks inside, begging him not to leave her. My eyes go glassy as water begins to pool in them and I keep my gaze diverted outside of the passenger window. I don’t want to let him see me and I certainly don’t want to pity him into staying.
A loud growl vibrates through the car from his chest as the words register in his mind, seconds before we pull into the front of the pack house. I don’t wait for anyone to open my door like I’m some damsel in distress. Car doors are the least of my worries. Truth be told, I’ve been through a hell of a lot worse. “Lexi, hey, Lexi,” Eric, the enforcer, calls out to me, but I don’t stop. I can’t look at anyone right now, I just need to get my necklace and my dress and far away from here. From this pack. From Alpha Liam.
I hear Eric call out, “Alpha” from a distance and my wolf picks up on the footsteps rushing behind me, but I don’t stop.
“Lexi, stop.” Alpha Liam commands in his Alpha voice. Despite the force behind his words, my body remains numb to the power he wields. "Stop, now," he demands, the words dripping with a bone-chilling intensity that sends shivers down my spine and makes it hard to swallow. His fury engulfs me, crashing into me in violent waves.
I’m so close, I tell myself, as I take the steps of the long winding staircase two by two. My body halts and terror rushes through me, making me feel weak in my knees when I see a large wolf growling at the top. His presence is commanding, his black, shiny fur exuding an undeniable majesty. My mind quickly registers that I’ve seen this wolf before, I’ve seen him in my dreams, right before he marks me.
Despite the potential danger, an odd feeling of ease dances over my body. "I'd like to gather my things," I say to the wolf, who responds with a menacing snarl, pushing me back with his muzzle. "I said, I'd like to get my things."
The pack house goes deathly silent, a pin could drop, and it would be heard. Glancing over my shoulder, I see that we now have an audience. I don’t realize it, but I’ve somehow managed to evade an Alpha’s command and I know that is what has everyone here shocked.
I return my gaze back to the massive wolf and suddenly, I remember that I’m far smaller than he is. I drop my eyes to the floor and bare my neck in submission, loud gasps filling the pack house.
The wolf quickly shifts back and leaves Alpha Liam in its wake. His broad shoulders and imposing frame towers over me. “Leave us,” he bellows out in his Alpha voice. His command thick in the tense air. The weight of his authority finally manages to press down on me, leaving me at the mercy of the Blood Alpha.
