10. Sinful Book 2
In order to make sure that Diego had at least one parent taking him to school, Antonio and I had to draw up a schedule, which we followed religiously without end.
I was on off duty for a while, which meant Antonio had to take him to school in the morning before going to work, and bring him back home before returning back to work. This week was my week, and nothing could kill my excitement because I missed having the kid run to me every time dropped or picked him up from school.
I had dropped Diego off at school, which was almost a disaster because he was ten minutes late. You can’t blame me, Diego wanted chocolates.
On getting to work, I couldn’t help but notice that the air Dan had around him was a bit off; something was wrong with him.
“What’s wrong?” I asked him. We were currently in my office and he was playing with the pen he had in his hands instead of working.
“Huh?” He looked up at me. He wasn’t even here.
“You don’t look so good, what’s wrong?” I asked again.
“Nothing much, just Samantha, she’s a bit distant these days, I don’t even know how to go about it. She won’t talk to me, she won’t smile, or laugh, she would only eat and lock herself up, I don’t even know what to do,” Dan sulked. Oh the poor man. Samantha was giving him a hard time.
“Try calling her doctor or something, to be sure it’s not a mental thing,” I was only trying to help. Dan shot me an annoyed look.
I shot my hands in the air in surrender immediately.
“I’m not even trying to be rude. I’m giving my honest heartfelt suggestion. If you don’t like it, it’s fine, no need to hate on me. Sorry,” I smiled and continued my work; only that this time, I couldn’t concentrate because I felt pain for Dan. He was really trying with this girl. There’s nothing he didn’t do for her. He helped her, stayed by her side when she was sick, made sure she had food to eat and clothes to wear, because we all know miss girl doesn’t work. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing. The least she could do was acknowledge his efforts so he wouldn’t feel like shit.
“Take her out on a date,” I suggested without lifting up my head.
“What?” Dan asked. I looked up at him.
“Take her out!” I repeated.
“You were almost always by her side before you started working here. Yes, you had planned it for a short time, but look where you are now. I understand that this job can be annoying and stressful, like I get it. Sometimes I just want to go home too. But you have to understand that she probably misses you a lot. You leave home by 8, go home by 5, sometimes 6, and then you spend a little time with her before you sleep, she doesn’t like that. So if you want, I could sign a one day leave for you. Go out and have fun with her,” I told him.
“You can be sweet when you want to,” Dan smiled.
“Yeah whatever! This is just a one day thing anyway, so enjoy it while it lasts,” I smiled at him and then we continued working.
I could feel Dan’s hyper mood coming back, which was only good for me.
A few hours later, my alarm went off, ringing loudly from my purse. It was time to get my son from school.
“I’m going to pick Diego up from school. I don’t think I’ll be coming back here,” I told Dan.
“You don’t have to lock up, Melissa will do it,” I told him as I grabbed my long coat, putting it on.
“See ya tom- well, See ya when I see ya,” I wanted at him, grabbed my purse and walked out of my office.
When I got to Diego’s school, I smiled at the little children that were running off to their parents. So cute.
I got out of my car and leaned on it, crossing my arms and legs as I waited for my baby boy to show.
“Sewa!,” someone called from behind me. The voice was oddly familiar, so I turned immediately to see who it was.
“Samantha? What are you doing here?” I asked her.
“I wanted to call you, but I realized I didn’t have your number. I was wondering if it would be okay to see Diego coming back from school like this. You know I never got to see him like this because-. Well, I just thought you wouldn’t mind,” Samantha had an innocent smile on her face as she spoke.
Whose fault was it that you never got to see him coming out of school?
“I see,” I inspected her. Was she okay? I remembered Dan telling me she had been in a foul mood lately.
“I hope you don’t mind?” She asked. She had hope in her eyes. Just as I was about to answer her, I heard a little boy yell “mommy,”
My baby boy was out.
“Mommy?” The lady beside him asked, I’m guessing she was his teacher. I had never seen her before. She was tall and pretty. Her melanin skin shone brightly in the short baby pink gown she had on.
She held Diego’s hands as he pulled her towards me.
“Yes, mommy; and you are?” I asked her with a small smile playing on my lips.
“Miss. Carol, Diego’s teacher,” she smiled.
“Nice to meet you,” I put out my hand for a hand shake. She gave me an uncertain look, then an uncomfortable smile, that told me all I wanted to know. She wasn’t expecting me, she was expecting Antonio; the look on her face was sheer disappointment. Good for her.
“Do I have something on my face?” I asked her.
“Excuse me,”
“Well, you keep looking at me like I have something on my face,” I asked Carol.
“No, no, I’m sorry. Have a nice day,” she smiled and walked away.
“Sewa?” Samantha called me. She was standing at the other side of my car, so Diego didn’t see her while he ran to me; but when he heard her voice, he hugged my legs tight, burying his face in my coat. She really traumatized the kid.
“I’m sorry Samantha, but I don’t think that would be good for Diego. Just hearing your voice right now made him lose it. He’s currently hiding away from you. Give it some more time,” I smiled warmly at her.
I had just given my judgement based on what had just happened with Diego. It was not a biased judgment, but the look on Samantha’s face told me she had misunderstood my words.
“I’m sorry I bothered to ask,” she nodded her head.
“I’m not saying no, I’m saying we should give Diego some time,” I clarified.
“I get it. I’m sorry,” she nodded again and walked away.
What was that all about? And that Carol girl, what was her deal?
I looked down at Diego, rubbing his head softly, telling him Samantha was gone and he had nothing to be afraid of. When he felt better, I put him in my car and we started our journey back home.
“Diego baby,” I called him.
“Mm mama,”
“Does Ms. Carol escort every kid to their parents, or it’s just you?” I asked him.
“Is just me. She says she likes me,” Diego answered. She likes your daddy too... and she will just have to like me too, since she looks like she wants the whole family.
