As I looked up to face my opponent, I found I was being attacked by a wolf. Shouldn't a wolf be on my side?
The wolf, which was enthroned above me and raised its lips menacingly, was slightly smaller than normal wolves and had black fur. Judging by its size, it was a she-wolf.
"Mara?" I asked through the Mindlink after recognizing the yellow-eyed wolf. But somehow she didn't seem to recognize me. Instead, she tried to snap at my throat, her eyes blank.
I didn't resist, just tried to keep her off my neck. I didn't want to hurt her, after all she had always been my best friend.
As she tried to grab my throat again, I took my chance as she swung back and pushed her off me with all my strength. She fell to the side of me, hit her head on a rock and was a bit disoriented. When she looked up again, the cold had left her eyes.
"Silva?" she asked in disbelief this time. But a moment later, her eyes had a blank expression again and she started to attack me again.
From the side, another big black wolf suddenly jumped up. This made short work, bit Mara in the neck, which broke, and she collapsed under him.
The eyes of the alpha who killed her glowed red. He didn't pay any attention to me or the fact that he just killed my best friend, but kept falling towards the next wolf.
He just killed her. She didn't want it. She had always been friendly and would never attack a pack. She'd even helped whip the men in the basement into shape. So why did she attack me? Something was terribly wrong here. And now she was dead.
A few tears welled up in my eyes for a moment, but there wasn't much time to mourn because I was looking after the alpha again, which killed another wolf.
Where do all the wolves come from and why are they attacking us?
In fact, I recognized this wolf too, from my old outcast pack. But what are they doing here? And why are they fighting on the side of the hunters?
This thing totally confused me. Jaxon told me he wanted to ask them to join us in the fight, but why are they attacking us now? That doesn't make any sense.
"Are you hurt?" Steven arrived and snuggled up to me for a moment. He then seemingly scanned my body for injuries.
"Asks whoever got the wolfsbane grenade," I replied. It's a miracle he's even standing and fighting again. But my mate seems like a tough guy. "Yeah, he's fine." , I answered his question before he continues wasting his time searching me.
I looked sadly at my former best friend's body again, then turned away to continue fighting. The fight was far from over and I can always grieve later.
Luckily it looked like we were superior to werewolves so far. More fell on the side of the hunters. But I'd better not shout it out. Who knows what other tricks Devin had up his sleeve? He certainly wouldn't have been so sure of victory if he hadn't had a good plan.
And then I saw it.
Vampire.
Although the sun shone through the leaves of the trees, they were still here. They walked in the sun and were ready to destroy us.
"How can that be?" It was the Alpha who uttered the question from everyone in the mindlink. "Costa. We need your support at the packhouse immediately! We have a vampire problem here. Don't ask how that can be."
"Of course Alpha. We're already on our way." , answered his beta.
"These aren't normal vampires, Alpha." I started to talk. I had already told him about the hybrid in Devin's haunted closet, but I didn't know there were so many like that already. ."
"Hybrids , " the Alpha concluded himself. That's clear. What other vampires can walk in the sun?
"Silva, you won't leave my side anymore. Got it?" said my mate, who stood close in front of me, growling, hoping to be able to ward off any threat from me. I thought that was meant sweetly, but I can also fight myself.
"Together," I said, stepping to his side. Together, as mates, we could do it.
"Together . " He repeated my word. He looks deep into my eyes again. Then we stood haunch to haunch, ready to defend ourselves from any side.
Before that, all hell broke loose here, but how should one describe this spectacle now, when it has just gotten a thousand times worse.
The hybrids suddenly ran at breakneck speed and pounced on any wolves in our pack. They pounced even on those who were already in the middle of a fight with a hunter. Without mercy, they rammed their fangs into the wolves' throats and fed on their blood.
One by one they fell. One wolf, then the second and the third. You could almost tell it by the seconds. It reminded me that Devin didn't want to wipe out the packs, just suppress them. And how do you suppress a pack? Exactly, you kill the leader and the strongest wolves.
The Alpha.
I quickly scanned the battlefield for my Alpha. I wouldn't be much help, but I would be a help.
Eventually I found him and Costa standing just like Steven and I, except they were surrounded by about five hybrids. The Alpha jumped on the first one that came along and actually managed to rip his throat out, causing him to collapse to the ground.
Costa and he actually made it out of this predicament.
But happy too soon.
They both just wanted to take a deep breath when the first hybrid got up behind them. The wound on his throat was completely healed.
"Alpha beware!" I yelled through the mindlink. Alpha Arsen jerked around to face the Hybrid, but by then it was too late. The Hybrid transformed into a werewolf in flight and landed on top of the Alpha, burying its claws in his chest.
Of course, the beta was immediately alarmed and even Steven now jumped towards the two to help them.
I wanted to go after him since we decided we'd do this together, but something distracted me from the edge of the battlefield.
You could hardly see him, but there he was. He had actually come.
devin He stood there calmly between the trees in his wolf form and looked at me expectantly. Then he turned and slowly walked away from the fight. Everything looked like a request for me to follow him.
But should I do it? I promised Steven I'd stay close to him. But this would be my one-time chance to end all of this. So should I dare?
