'Did we actually make it? Did we win?' was the first thing that popped into my head. If it weren't for Devin controlling all the hybrids, we'd certainly make it against the Hunters.
But inside I already knew that it wasn't over yet.
And so it was.
Devin, who just seemed lifeless, straightened his upper body and glared angrily at the hunter. He actually managed to make Devin angry. There was no way he would survive that.
"You really think one shot between my eyes is enough to kill me?" he snarled, his eyes blazing red with anger. You could also watch the puncture-like gunshot wound between his eyes close and the skin grow back together .
"Unfortunately no, but do you really think that we don't know how to kill you monsters. After all, it was we who created you hybrids in the first place. And since you killed my father, it will be an honor for me to end your life." Derek was furious and, from a scabbard hanging from his belt, drew a long, shiny silver sword. It was all very reminiscent of a knight "Pure silver, so sharp you'd cut yourself by touching it. It's been infused with wolfsbane. A perfect weapon for decapitating someone like you," he continued to chide.
So would he really come to a fight now? That Derek, couldn't really be that stupid. Maybe he could solve the problem for Devin, but then he wouldn't stand a chance against the pack.
Actually, I should be happy about his stupidity. Yet all I felt was pure fear. When this was all over, me and the other hybrids would be next on the list, which was actually right since we've actually already lost our one life. Actually, we're already dead. But then I could never see Steven again...
Derek was now almost face to face with Devin. "That's it for you and your werewolf friends. We're going to kill you all-..." He couldn't even finish his threat when Devin stood ready behind him and broke his neck.
"That they always have to be so arrogant," he wailed.
Suddenly more shots rang out around us. Apparently, the rest of the hunters didn't think much of Devin killing their new boss in cold blood.
They started firing around like savages with no aim or clear plan. Chaos broke out again and everyone around me was now fighting the hunters.
Since Devin also used his soldiers, it didn't take long for the last hunter to die bleeding.
However, shortly after the hunters were all killed, Devin unleashed his soldiers on the pack. So that a battle continued to rage around us. Only this time without all the grenades or bombs.
"I only needed the hunters to provide me with a hybrid army anyway. Now they were no longer of concern. I can easily crush the rest of the packs in the world with my wonderful army." While everyone else was fighting, Devin stood opposite me. I wanted to attack him a few minutes ago, but somehow I can't. It's like one of the keep unseen power from doing it. I'm guessing that's because Devin is sort of like my alpha, although I don't accept him as that. To me, alpha arsenic is still my alpha.
So I stood a meter in front of Devin and tried to kill him with my gaze.
"A pity. Actually, I was hoping that Alpha Arsen would finally find its way to me so that I would finally have an equal opponent. But it seems like he has his hands full protecting his Luna. Do you think he'll be very mad if I kill her? I remember almost making it once before..."
"Keep your dirty hands off her," I growled. Devin just couldn't help it either. And instead of fighting, he stood in the center of the battle and watched everyone. But well, I wasn't doing anything else right now.
"You're so cute when you're angry," he laughed, then kept walking towards me. He was about to raise his hand when it was slapped away.
"Touch my mate again and you're dead," threatened a very angry Steven.
"Like you can stand against me." Devin just laughed at him.
"So how about we finish the fight we started the other day. You against me, man against man." Devin returned his full attention to Steven, but continued to grin.
But Steven couldn't mean that seriously. He lost last time. He certainly wouldn't survive again...Please Steven, don't do this.
"I accept your challenge," Devin said, about to transform into his werewolf.
"No. I said man to man,' Stehen stopped him. While they were similar in size as humans, don't underestimate Devin. He's a hybrid now, after all. Plus, he still plays unfairly. He can impossible to win alone.
"Okay." Devin interrupted his transformation process again and confronted my mate. "Then let's fight like men."
As soon as that was said, Steven charged at Devin to punch him. Devin didn't mind at all. No, he didn't even flinch. Instead, he punched Steven in the upper jaw, causing my mate to stagger back a few feet.
I backed away and made room for the two to have their fight. But was that correct? Devin wasn't playing fair, after all. Then why should we fight fair?
In those seconds in which I was thinking, I no longer heard what was happening in front of me. When I looked back at the fight, I was horrified to see that my mate was bleeding on the floor and was repeatedly hit by Devin.
My eyes found his because he kept his eyes on me intently while he was being beaten up.
"Together," he mouthed. That was the deal we made earlier. We wanted to go through this together. We wanted to fight together.
Without wasting any more time, I jumped onto Devin's back and wrapped an arm around his neck so I had him in a headlock. Of course, Devin tried to defend himself and let my mate go.
He staggered back a few steps, then threw himself backwards onto the ground. He landed on my body with all his weight and momentum. But I certainly wouldn't let go. This was the chance. Our chance and we had to take it. Of course I don't know how I would continue as a hybrid after that, but maybe my decision to follow Devin into the forest wasn't so stupid after all. He turned me into a hybrid and now we had a chance to win.
Steven picked himself up in time and extended his wolf claws. With these he then clawed his way into Devin's neck from the other side and together we tried to somehow rip his head off. But then nothing stirred.
Devin, of course, tried to fight back. He clawed and thrashed with his hands and feet while his head jerked in an attempt to free himself somehow.
"Ahhh," Steven suddenly yelled. In the position I was in, I couldn't tell what was going on, but I assumed Steven had just been hit.
"Are you okay?" I asked.
"Yeah, I'm fine," Steven reassured me. However, Devin was getting more and more enraged and harder to pin down.
"Can you try to hold him tight somehow, or distract him. I have a plan." I told my mate via Mindlink. Devin didn't need to know, after all.
I didn't wait for Steven's reply, but released my grip on Devin's arm and rushed to the corpse of that hunter Derek. Just like before, the sword still lay beside him. I immediately grabbed the leather-bound handle and quickly rushed back to Steven with it. Apparently he couldn't keep Devin in check any longer, because when I got back to them, Devin was about to lunge at Steven, his claws now also extended.
Everything happened so fast and yet the world around me went in slow motion for a moment.
"Steven!" I yelled to get his attention. I didn't even wait for him to look at me, just threw the sword up in his direction.
Just as it got to him, he grabbed the handle and immediately punched Devin.
The sword was razor sharp and cut Devin's head straight from his shoulders. And that's how it happened...
We actually made it. Devin was dead.
With his last breath, the fighting around us also stopped. When I looked around I knew why.
All hybrids seemed to have just woken up from a dream and were completely disoriented. They couldn't seem to remember anything.
Glad I ran into my mate's arms. I rested my head on his chest and just savored the feeling of victory. Hopefully things would get better from now on. We had actually won and we were both more or less still alive.
Steven's body tension suddenly took its leave and his weight landed on mine.
"I'm sorry."
