Alpha Maseno
Alpha Maseno.
I was in my office, perusing files, going through accounts, and making calls. I had acquired one more pack from an alpha who refused to pay for what he took from me.
The plans I was making were for reestablishing it, expanding it, and making sure that I would create more job opportunities for its members.
The pack itself was rich, with minerals hidden deep in the ground. "All the loan he took from us—what did he do with it?" I asked my beta, who shrugged in response.
Five years ago, this alpha came to me and said he needed my financial help. He said he needed to buy resources and make sure that they extracted their own raw materials, processed them, and manufactured them.
He said he wanted his pack to export more and import less. I didn't think twice about helping him because I found his idea very convincing.
I knew that with the profit he would make, he would return the money he borrowed from me as soon as possible, but I guess I had just underestimated him, just like I did with Alpha Benna.
At the thought of his name, my mood drops. I rose to my feet, the chair I was sitting on scraping on the floor as it slid backwards, and walked to my secret bedroom, sharing the same wall as my office, that can be opened by trying to pull a black book from the shelf.
"Going to sleep already? It's not fair." My beta raised an eyebrow at me, pouted and then replaced it with a smirk that lingered on his face in a period which seemed like forever. He then crossed his hands across his chest while leaning his back on the chairs backrest.
"Nah, I am going to grab something cold," I said while walking through the now-sliding, open wall-like door.
I walked to my room, to the fridge in the living room across the bedroom, and grabbed a bottle of wine. I carried the glasses in the middle of my fingers and retreated to my office, the doors sliding themselves shut as I passed by.
"Wine and papers, amazing!" my beta winked as I walked in.
I chuckled and poured a glass for him and another for me. "This will help us get done with this sh*t," I told him while nodding toward the glass.
Silence reigned around us again, littered with the shuffling of papers and the clicking of glasses as we put them on the table. We let out our own sighs as we took deep breaths every now and then.
"Wine really fuels energy. I feel like I've got superpowers." My beta stretched like a cat under the sun, his bones breaking and snapping after working for a long time.
"You haven't found any information about her? I asked him, hoping that this conversation would distract us from the files on the table, thus taking a break.
"Absolutely nothing," he sighed. "Why don't we summon Alpha Benna's second in command? I'm sure he'll let us know about the girl. They seem really close." My beta suggested.
I shook my head negatively. "Nay, this will make Alpha Benna grow more suspicious of him."
"More suspicious? What do you mean, Sen? Is he suspecting him to be on our side?" My intense gaze was stuck on his face when he asked me this question.
I watched him lick his lower lip while turning his gaze away from me. "Sorry,I ask too much." He smirked.
I chuckled, sipping the last drop of wine left in my glass. "Yes, he's suspecting him of working with us." I filled his curiosity.
"I see, he said, nodding. "But, Sen, how do you know?" He asked after a while.
"I have my way, Sony. So, if you could shut up and..."
He raised his hands to cut me off. "Fine, fine, fine. I'll get back to work. I have been working my ass off since morning, and I can't be allowed to talk for even a minute." I had him mumbling under his breath.
"Just go through this, and I'll let you take a break." I smirked, passing a huge black file to him.
"Seriously?" He snapped, anger clouding his sky-blue eyes. "You're doing this on purpose, aren't you? You know I'll get done with it in the next twenty years." He sighed, hitting his head vigorously on his palms.
"Don't tell me you want to self-harm because of this stupid file. How about this?" I drummed my fingers on my chin as I thought of a better way to get him to work.
"A vacation of your choice. Just get done first." I suggested.
He brushed his hands on his face and digging his fingers on his curly golden brown short hair as he sank into thoughts.
After a minute of thinking he licked his lower lip. "You better keep your promise, asshole." He murmured the last word.
I broke into an uncontrollable laugh, something I did only in my beta's presence. I could say he was annoyed as fuck since he walked away from my side and went to work on the sofa.
"If only he were a girl. I could have gotten him married to you long ago," a voice said at the door, startling us.
"Dad, good afternoon. I stood as I shook hands with him, my gaze glued to the chocking Sony because of what my dad had just said.
"Here, some water, or else you'll die even before going on the vacation of your choice." I passed a glass of water to him while trying to hide my smile, something I was terribly failing to do.
"You are doing it again, Sen. I don't like it." He grabbed the glass from my hands and gulped down the water in one go. He dropped the now-empty glass on the table and nodded at my dad as he made to walk out.
"Wait," my dad called after him, stopping him from going out, something I was thinking of doing.
I am wondering," he said, holding his hands on his chin. "Why is it that I have never seen this, remind me again? How long have you guys been working together?" He asked, sending confusion our way.
"Six," I and my beta responded in unision. He glared at me as if wanting to bite my face. I laughed again, wholeheartedly.
"Why?" Our voices still synced, something that annoyed him much more because he gritted his teeth together, making me laugh once again.
I felt my dad's intense gaze on me, and I turned to face him, replacing the smile with a poker face. "Why dad?" I asked him again.
"It feels good seeing you laugh this hard, son," he said instead, his eyes glassy with tears. "Enough of this emotional moment," he chuckled, wiping the tears with the back of his hand.
"Just promise me something; never stop laughing." I rose to hug him, patting his back in assuarance.
"Good," he nodded, and then turning to my beta, he told him, "promise that you'll always make him happy."
Sony looked confused. "I...
"Dad," I growled warningly, and he smirked, raising his hands in defeat.
"Fine, now tell me, what are you going to do with that genie?" He asked.
I knitted my brow in confusion. "Genie? Are you sure you are okay, dad? You are speaking strangely today."
"The girl Alpha Benna is after I tried to run a background check on her, but damn, there's nothing." My dad sighed.
"We tried too, but don't worry, I've changed my ways." I smirked at him. He rose to his feet and stared at me and Sony for so long that I wanted to intervene.
When he reached the door, he grabbed the door's bolt and turned to face us instead of going out.
In a stare that seemed to last forever, he winked at us, mouthed something we couldn't understand, and walked out, leaving his laughter behind.
"What was that?" Sony turned to me.
I shrugged. "I don't know." I picked a file from the table and focused on it to avoid his intense gaze on me.
"What do you mean by you don't know? You fucking know something. Why was he looking at you when he said, Play safe?" He asked.
I pinched the bridge of my nose while running my fingers through my black, shoulder-length, shiny, and full hair. People always confused it for a wig.
They will always believe it was natural hair after pulling it until my scalp burned.
"Fuck Sony," I murmured while glaring at him. "Whole of my life, no one has ever questioned me? Fucking no one? Why do you have to do it?"
"Because there is a need for you to answer that question." He glared back.
I scoffed, unconsciously running my fingers through my naturally tangled hair. "I don't know, okay. He mouthed the word to both of us. I don't understand. Why would you take his words seriously when you fucking know him? It's been six years since you met him."
"There is always something you are hiding from me when you do that. You know what? I am out!" He pushed me aside when I stood to stop him, and he stormed out of the office, the huge file clutched under his arms.
Before I could follow him, my doctor and, at the same time, my pilot walked in. "Trouble in paradise?" He raised his brow and sat beside me.
"What do you mean?" I asked while putting on a poker face.
"That's not going to work on me." He chuckled, stretching his hands to grab Sony's glass, which was half full with wine.
He took the glass to his lips, and before he could take a sip, I snatched it away and gulped all the wine left in it.
He laughed, and after calming down, he said, "Anyways, you didn't tell me why there is trouble in paradise."
"What do you mean?" I was pissed off by this question. "There was no problem. Why do you think there is?" I asked him.
He smirked meaningfully at me. "At least you've got to admit this is your little paradise. Anyway, when I greeted him at the door, he was like, Piss off!'
"I don't know why he is angry. Maybe it's because I gave him a lot of work." I tore my gaze from him because I knew he'd figure out I was lying, and then, turning to face him, I asked, "What brought you here? I am busy!"
"Right," he nodded, remembering what brought him to my office. "Your little rabbit is awake. Although she...
I didn't let him finish his sentence because I stormed out of the office to the ward, bumbing on the workers I met on my way out.
