Chapter 33
...Dickinson pov…
There was a pause on the other end of the line, and I could help only but feel that I won't get my desired answer.
"I'm afraid not," my lawyer said, his tone apologetic. "She's still refusing to sign the papers and I can't force her into signing it."
"Damn it all!".
I let out a curse as I hit the wooden table hard, feeling the anger and frustration bubble up inside of me.
"I can't believe she's doing this," I said, pacing back and forth in my office. "We discussed about this, and she knows it's over between us. Why is she being so difficult?"
"I understand how you're feeling," my lawyer said. "But we have to remember that your wife has a right to contest the divorce. It's not going to be easy, but we'll just have to keep working on her and hoping she'll sign them."
"She will and she has to". I let out a sigh, feeling defeated. I knew this wasn't going to be easy, but I didn't expect it to be this difficult.
"Discuss it with her and convince her", I told him.
"I understand," my lawyer said. "We'll keep working on it and hopefully we'll have some good news soon."
I hung up the phone and leaned back in my chair, letting out a deep sigh. I knew I had to focus on work, but it was hard to concentrate when my personal life was such a mess.
I spent the day going over reports, but my mind was elsewhere. I was distracted and irritable.
Knock!
"Come in", I was on my chair twirling from left to right, papers were scattered all over the table, all needed to be worked on. My Secretary entered holding a bunch of papers.
What are these?
The documents you requested sir.
"Ok drop them and then you can go"
Sir the other documents need to be return to our clients today.
Ok I will sign them.
Sir..., her eyes trailed off to the huge pile of paperwork. Mr Andrew said he is coming tomorrow to discuss terms on the deal.
"Ok that's fine."
"He…," she tried to continue.
Get out I shouted pointing at the door. Startled and terrified she hurried out closing the door behind her.
"Allow no one in!"
"Yes, yes sir."
Finally, as the day was winding down, I couldn't take it anymore. I gathered my things and headed out of the office, determined to clear my head.
I climbed into my car and headed home, hoping to find some peace and quiet at my cottage. But as I drove, my thoughts kept turning to Emile, the woman carrying my child.
Why has Emile been distant lately, not returning my calls or texts? I I was starting to get worried, and as I pulled up to my cottage, I made a decision. I was going to go over to her place and make sure she was okay.
I grabbed my keys and headed out, determined to get to the bottom of things. I drove over to Emile's bestfriend apartment, my mind racing with all the possible scenarios. Maybe she was just busy, or she is pissed off at me and decided to ignore my calls.
Her best friend she referred to as Erick was not too pleased with me taking her you could say we aren't on good terms.
I arrive at Her bestfriend house, my heart racing with anxiety. Why has Emile been ignoring my calls and texts for days, and I'm starting to worry. I knock on the door as I waved the feeling of unease off my mind, but there's no answer. I knock again, harder this time, but still nothing. I decide to try the handle and to my surprise, the door opens.
I step inside, calling out Emile's name. The house is quiet, but I can sense that someone is here. I walk through the living room and into the kitchen, where I find a young man sitting at the table, staring at his phone.
" Who.. are you? It's you..." He ask, feeling a sense of alarm, he startled me.
"Oh I..."
"Why are you here" , he stood up as he placed his phone on the table and crossed his hands.
"Can I help you", he ask again
"Is Emile here? I will like to see her. I asked trying my best to be polite, but his annoyed gaze that stared at me like a wild animal staring at his prey.
Is she here?" I ask, my voice laced with desperation.
"Hmmmf" Erick scoffs as goes to the fridge at the left hand side of the kitchen. He opens the fridge and I could see different types of drink then takes out a can of drink.
"Don't worry I don't need anything." I waved my hands.
He scoffed again and opened the drink. "I wasn't planning on offering you anything. I think you should take your leave Emile isn't here." He said rather bluntly. He sipped the drink as he gestured at the door with his eyes.
"Oh…", I grinned trying to act like a gentleman was really hard," do you have any idea where she is then?" I continued.
He sipped his drink, I haven't heard from her at all since you left with her
Erick hesitates for a moment before speaking. "She left my house a few days ago and followed you.
"She told me that she and her mom had a fight and that she needed some space. I haven't seen her since she left with you, besides are you not the best person to answer that question?" He said.
"The thing is somethings happened and…'
"What happened?!", he interrupted me his eyebrows pressing together he dropped his drink.
The thing is... we had a small misunderstanding.
Misunderstanding?
" Yeah misunderstanding and we separated at the airport.I wanted to drive her home but she refused to let me drive her.
"That was since when?"
"The day before yesterday.'
"That was on Monday?"
"Yeah, Emile has been distant lately, not returning my calls or texts? I was starting to get worried and that is why I came."
"Let me call her." He picked up his phone dialing her number.
Beep beep I could hear the phone trying to connect.
No answer?
He tried for an extra two times and there was still no answer.
I was now worried and troubled what might be happening, if she refuses to pick my calls then why isn't she picking her best friend calls?
Emile best friend leaned on the kitchen table his face showed worry and confusion.
"We have to go to mum's house," I said as i folded my hands across my chest my face showed worry.
"You mean her house?" He asked. "They are not on good terms due to some someone who made her sleep over and now she is termed as a slut." He scoffed.
"I choked on his words, slut?"
"Where are you going? Couldn't you just call her mom." I asked confused.
"I wish I could."
"This is your besties mum we are talking about."
She doesn't acknowledge me as her bestie, and aren't you her soon to be husband, aren't you supposed 5o have her mum's number. Hebsid sarcastically".
"That is…"
"Right after you Mr…"
Dickinson, Mr Dickinson. I said as I went out the kitchen.
"And you?"
"Erick."
"Ok Erick."
Going through the living room, his house was pretty nice i admired the painting bon the walls.
My eye caught a picture frame of him and emile.
He was beside her in the picture with his hands on her shoulders and she was smiling happily.
The smile was contagious and I couldn't help but stare at it a little feeling of jealousy got me. To think I made this beautiful rose with a charming smile cry.
She was the normal Emile in this picture living her life before I came in. I couldn't help but feel like the antagonist in a jolly girl's life. 'Emile I want to see you.' I muttered.
Don't stare let's go. He said gesturing bat the door. I took one last look and headed out.
I strode to my car and hopped in, "we are using my car". I said while putting my seat belt
Ok, he sat in the passengers front seat and put his seat belt on. I drove out going a bit faster than the speed limit.
"Take it easy", he said.
Alright, alright, I couldn't help but feel uneasy.
I remembered bthe paths to her house so in half an hour we were at her house already and I packed then hurriedly jumped out. Heading for her door.
Hold on you haven't locked your car.
Yeah yeah, I closed the distance back to were i could use the remote key.
"Now we can…."
"Yeah but you are behind me". He said walking in front.
"Ok then", I slowed my pace allowing him to walk in front leading the way.
We arrived at the door and he pressed nthe bell twice.
There was no answer.
"Huh no one in?" he tried the bell again.
After a few moments there was no reply.
"Is there no one in the house?" Erick asked.
I couldn't help it but fear of the unknown gripped me.
