Chapter 13: Nate
I visited Nate’s house, and no one opened the door when I knocked on the door. So, I opened the mind link. ‘Nate, where are you?’
‘Hey, Cam, I’m at the food storage.’
‘What are you doing there?’ I frowned, as the food storage was not Nate’s territory.
‘I walked around there to see the Lambdas and the Kappas worked. But, unfortunately, they didn’t have enough people to help.’ Lambda was the hunter, while Kappa was Lambda’s leader.
I let out a sigh. ‘We can distribute the Nus and the Xis to help there.’ Nu was the sentry of the pack whose role was to find natural resources for the pack. At the same time, Xi was a subordinate of Nu.
‘They are out to find herbs and vegetables.’
‘I’ll go there ASAP.’
I closed the mind link and headed toward the food storage. What Nate said was true. We lacked people to help here.
As I rushed there, Nate turned his body and grinned. “Hey, Cam, great to see you.”
“I need to talk to you, but let’s finish things here first.”
The Kappas organized the Lambdas well, but with much food they got from the hunting, they needed a lot of time to clean, portion, and store the food. So, I nodded at Nate. We helped cut the food, as we were the strongest werewolves there.
Soon Nate and I finished cutting the meat. After that, the food only needed to be cleaned, portioned, and stored. Finally, all Kappas and Lambdas bowed at Nate and me.
“Thank you, Beta Cameron and Delta Nate. If you were not here, we might need half a day to finish the work.”
I nodded a little and smiled. “Thank you for your hard work. I’ll let the Alpha know you need more people. Since the Nus and the Xis are leaving to find herbs and vegetables, I think we need to plant them in our pack. So, we’ll have more people in our area.”
“Good idea, Beta Cameron. We may farm some cattle here too.”
“Why not? As long as you can manage the schedule and organize who and what they will do.” I glanced at Nate. “What if we talk at your house?”
“Sure, why not?”
Then we left the food storage area and walked to Nate’s house. His house was smaller but tidier than mine. Nate was a perfectionist, so his home reflected his personality too.
Before I sat, Nate shook his head. “Let’s clean our hands first. I’ll prefer you to wash your body too. There is blood splatter on your clothes.”
I chuckled at how strictly Nate tried to keep his place as clean as he wanted. “Yes, sir!”
Nate prepared the water for me to wash my body. After finishing, I dried my body with the towel he provided too. He would be a great husband for Lisa. I grinned, thinking how frustrated Nate would be with Lisa. From what I heard, Lisa was a spoiled she-wolf. She wanted everything according to her wishes and ignored all others’ suggestions.
I knew I played with fire when I accepted my father’s request, but I always thought it was a political marriage. I didn’t need to love or get used to her attitude. I had even prepared to divorce her if she didn’t respect me as his mate.
Yes, I wasn’t a good person. But the marriage of convenience in political strategy was expected. No one would object to me of having a mistress or two. I hadn’t asked Lisa if she wanted to fill the rule as my mate or only in the name. I didn’t mind if she had a lover elsewhere. However, if she was pregnant with another werewolf, it was a good chance for me to divorce her.
“I need to wash myself first. By the way, if you are hungry, take a meal by yourself in the dining room.” Then Nate entered the bathroom.
Nate, or Nathanael Thorn, was three years younger than me. He was thirty-two this year. Nate was my best friend and subordinate. I hadn’t told him anything, but I thought everyone had already known that he would be my Beta when I became an Alpha later.
How we started our friendship was strange. I met Nate twenty years ago when he was poorly wounded near the river. Thanks to the Highest One, he recovered. Nate said that he lost his family in the war with rogues. He saw his sister killed before his eyes.
If he had his pack, he might get revenge later. I smiled, as it was a win-win solution for everyone. For twenty years, I had a best friend and subordinate. I could even say our relationship was closer than my relationship with Jack, my little brother. Jack was five years younger than me, but we wasn’t too close. Maybe it was because he thought I was a little like our father.
I couldn’t deny that my future responsibility forced me to be strict and even harsh sometimes. Yet since Jack didn’t have the burden, he enjoyed life as he wanted it to be.
“What are you thinking?” Nate had finished washing his body already, and I guessed he had taken a bath as I smelled the soap scent from his body.
“Taking a bath first?”
“For sure.” He grinned. “So, what do you want to talk about with me?”
“I need your help.”
He nodded. “Sure.” Then he sat next to me.
“What do you think if you replace me by mating with Lisa?”
Nate stared at me for a few seconds. “Why?”
“I have a mistress that I can’t let go.”
“Huh? Since when? How come I know nothing about her?” He frowned, but then nodded. “Anna Warren, right?”
“Yes, Anna Warren. It’s a long story. I’ll tell you about it later. Back to my request first, please. I have talked with my father. If you’re willing to take the responsibility, we’ll attack another pack and make you the Alpha.”
Nate said nothing; his gaze was hard to read. “Being an Alpha will help me get revenge.”
“True. You can do anything with your new pack.”
He let out a sigh. “Then I will say yes.”
He offered his arm to me. I grabbed his lower arms and nodded, sealing our agreement by linking our arms together.
“Thanks, Nate. I owe you big time.”
Nate shook his head. “From the moment you saved my life, I knew I would do anything for you.” He smiled a little. “Now, tell me about this girl.”
