Chapter 44: No Way Out

I was dumbfounded to know someone wanted to harm my pup. Only my father, the Theta, and Susanne were possible to do it, but the only one who wanted to get rid of my pup was my father. I stroked my belly. I had no choice. If I insisted on being with Nate, my father would do anything to kill my pup.

Cameron might be the only choice I had for now. Besides, Nate was his foster brother and best friend. Surely, he would respect Nate and me enough not to touch me. Besides, he told me I would be his mate in the name only. I touched my stomach again. Maybe one day I could find my happiness, but I couldn’t see any other way out for now.

There was a knock on the door. A maid came with a tray. She trembled and didn’t want to look me in the eye. The maid almost dropped the tray, but she balanced it. Soon, she arranged the plates, bowls, and cutlery. When she bowed to go out, I stopped her.

“Wait a minute. Why did you send the food here?”

“Uh, the cook asked me, miss.” Then she curtsied and rushed to leave the room.

“Susanne, what do you think?”

Susanne touched her neck and frowned. “Ten years I have worked here, and the cook has never done it.”

“I know.”

I bent my head because I wanted to weep. Why did my father hate my pup so much until he wanted to kill them? I must meet him now. I couldn’t let him drive me to insanity like this. So, I went to my father’s house. Rose, the maid in my father’s house, opened the door for me.

Then she whispered, “Miss, be careful.” Rose pointed at my stomach.

I nodded. “I know. Thanks.” Then I strolled to my father’s working room. He wasn’t there. I thought he might be out, but then a door from the terrace opened. My father walked in. I could smell the tobacco on his body.

“Father, did you smoke outside?” He stopped smoking the moment my late mother had Bill and me.

My father said nothing. “Lisa, you are my only daughter. I’m not the most loving father, and it’s hard to see both of you and Bill grow without Angelica by my side.”

“Father ….”

“I wouldn’t have chosen Cameron if he weren’t a good man. I want the best for you.”

“Even by killing my pup?” My voice was barely a whisper. I couldn’t take it anymore and broke down sobbing. “I love Nate and the pup, Father. Please, don’t kill my pup.”

My father stared at me for a few seconds. Then he let out a long sigh. “You look like Angelica. Each time I see you, I’m reminded of her.”

“Father ….”

“I won’t kill your pup. But promise me something.”

I nodded. “What is it? I will do it as long as I can keep the pup.”

“Try your best to care for Cameron. I want both of you to have a normal relationship, not a political marriage.” He closed his eyes. “I want you to have a good family.”

“Yes, Father. I will try my best.”

A maid knocked on the door, bringing tea for my father. But then my father asked her to bring another cup of tea. In a few minutes, the maid brought another cup and put it on the table.

“It’s difficult to be a single father. I hope you can understand why I did this.”

“I know, Father, and I thank you for loving me so much. I’m sorry, as I’m not a good daughter.”

My father shook his head. “No, it’s I who wasn’t a good father to you. I hope we can mend our relationship after your marking ceremony with Cameron .”

I walked over and hugged my father. “I like it, Father.”

Then my father drank the tea. I returned to my seat and sipped the tea too. We didn’t talk but enjoyed the tea. But then, the room was spinning. I put the cup on the table and held the chair.

“Father, is it an earthquake?” But then, I couldn’t think of anything else, and everything went black.

I woke up in my room. Susanne was there, and she wiped my forehead. “Miss, you shocked me! Alpha Fred carried you here.”

“What happened to me?”

Susanne shook her head. “According to Alpha Fred, the Theta checked you already. Since you are pregnant, it’s because of the hormone.”

I nodded. “I see. Bring me beef steak, Susanne. I’m hungry.”

After Susanne left, I touched my stomach and smiled. Somehow, I could feel my pup inside and relaxed. Being a pregnant woman was uneasy. Then I smiled as I remembered Cameron. He would be happy to see our pup. I wanted to meet him soon.

That was when Susanne brought a tray of beef steaks. I drooled to inhale the smell. “Please bring me a cup of tea.”

“Yes, miss.”

Before Susanne reached the door, I asked her, “The tea can wait for later. Go to my father’s house and ask him to ask Cameron to come here. I miss him.”

Susanne gaped and frowned. “Miss, I wonder if you mean Delta Nathanael.”

“Nathanael? Why would I want him here? I want my father’s pup to come here.”

“It’s Delta Nathanael, miss.”

I glared at Susanne. “Why do you keep mentioning his name? I don’t know him! My mate is Cameron. Go now!”

“Miss …. I will go now.”

I ate my steak with annoyance. Why did Susanne keep mentioning Nathanael? Did she have a memory problem? It must be. I smiled as I imagined Cameron would be here soon.

When Susanne came with my tea later, she only put the cup on the table and said nothing. After I finished my meal, she told me. “Beta Cameron will come today. Alpha Fred told me he would contact him.”

“Wonderful! I miss him.” Then I stroked my belly. “My pup, you miss your father too, don’t you? Mommy misses him too. Don’t worry. We will meet him soon.”
