Chapter 81: A Truce
I thought we were cool. I meant Jack was nicer now, but apparently, I was wrong. He was still a jerk! How could I forget he was my enemy? Argh! I wanted to slap him to erase his smirk. But I only pretended I didn’t hear what he said and looked around the street.
He said nothing when he finally parked the car. When I got out of the car, I gasped to see we would head to a steakhouse. It was the best and the most expensive steak restaurant in Moon City! I bit my lower lip. What should I do? What if he left me to pay the meals?
Before saying I was not hungry, my stomach growled again. I shut my eyes in frustration because I couldn’t afford to pay, even the cheapest steak here. Yes, Jack offered to pay for the dinner, but who knew if he lied?
Noticing nothing, Jack stood beside me. He held the small of my back and nudged me to move. “You must be hungry. Eat as much as you can. My treat tonight.”
“Are you sure? It’s not your trick again?” I asked, glaring at him because I was worried. I pretended to be brave, but inside, I was terrified if he would humiliate me in the most luxurious steakhouse of our city.
Jack turned around and looked me in the eye. “Look, I know I teased you a lot in the past.”
“Not teasing, but bullying,” I corrected him.
“Well, I didn’t intend to bully you or Anna. It was out of control. I’m sorry, okay?” He touched his nape. From his awkward expression, it seemed he was embarrased.
“Fine! But no more tricks and bullies. Otherwise, l will hate you for life.”
Jack grinned. He looked so handsome when he smiled. Wait a minute! Forgot what I said. But then I glanced at him again. I couldn’t deny that he was an attractive werewolf. Letting out a shaky sigh, I shook my head. I must lose my mind to think of my enemy as attractive.
Jack held my hand and pulled me to enter the restaurant. A server greeted us and brought us to a table. I gulped, as it was a private table.
The server gestured to the menu on the table. “Please look at the menu first, sir, madam. If you have questions, I will be glad to assist.”
Jack nodded. He opened the menu and immediately ordered, “Porterhouse steak.” Then he asked me, “What do you want?”
I flipped the menu and shook my head. “Uh, I don’t know ….” I wanted to order a tenderloin, but I wasn’t sure it was a good idea. Who knew if he would mock my choice?
“Do you want me to order for you?” Jack asked.
I nodded quickly. “Yes, please.” It was the safest option. Whatever he ordered, surely he would disagree with that.
Jack gazed at me for a few seconds, then he glanced at the server. “Double filet mignon, please.”
“Very good choices, sir. For the drink, do you want to order wine?”
Jack asked me again, “What do you think?”
I shrugged. “Up to you.”
“Okay, champagne, then. That will be all.”
The server repeated our orders, then left the private room. I bit my lower lip because I knew how expensive the prices were.
“Melanie, what’s wrong?”
“Nothing.” I pretended to be calm, but my sweat poured heavily while we were in a cold room.
Jack bent forward and wiped my sweat with a tissue. “Don’t be afraid. I promise you I will be a gentleman and treat you well. If I don’t, you can report me to Cameron.”
I gaped because I didn’t expect him to say that. Who knew my ex-bully could be so considerate too? I blew my breath. “Actually, I’m afraid,” I whispered.
He held my hand and stroked my palm. “Your hand is cold. Let me warm it.” He squeezed my hand with his hand. “What are you afraid of?”
“I’m afraid you will humiliate me again.” Bending my head, I took a deep breath. “I don’t have enough money to pay for the steak here. So, I’m afraid you will leave and I’ll be trapped here, as I can’t afford to pay.”
Jack let out a long sigh. Then, unexpectedly, he took his wallet and handed it over to me. “Please check my wallet. You can keep it until we must pay.”
I gazed at him. It was impolite to check someone’s wallet. Yet his gaze was serious, so I opened it. When I looked inside, I was surprised to see so many Moon dollars inside. I bit my lower lip. He was handsome and rich. Well, Jack was our former Alpha’s son. So, it was not a surprise. But it was the first time I saw so much money in his wallet.
I returned his wallet. “Here, I trust you now.”
However, Jack shook his head. “No, please keep it for me.”
Because he asked me to do it, I put his wallet in my pocket. The server came with a bottle of champagne and two wineglasses. “Do you want me to open the bottle now, sir?”
“Sure.”
The server opened the bottle and poured the champagne into two wine glasses. After placing both glasses on our table, he left us.
“How about we make a toast?” Jack asked.
“Okay, what for?” I held the wineglass. From the smell, I knew it was a high-quality champagne.
“For a truce, and maybe happiness?” Jack lifted his glass.
I shrugged. “For a truce and happiness.”
We clinked our glasses and sipped the champagne. It was an odd toast. Then Jack moved to sit next to me.
“Why do you move?” I asked.
He scratched his head. He looked uncertain of himself. I found it weird because Jack was one of the most confident werewolves I’d ever met. “Because I want to ask you something.”
“Oh? What do you want to ask?”
“What do you think if I want you to be mine?” He said the last three words quickly.
I gasped as I couldn’t believe what I heard. “What?!”
Jack repeated his question again, slowly this time, and added, “I want you to be my woman. What do you say?”
