Chapter 53 HEARTBREAK 102
Church became drama.
Osano who was Sobrina's convert and close friend began to avoid her. She was lucky she wasn't messing around with sex, she would have been a target to cultists.
Sobrina kept attending WUCC, but only out of frustration, she had no where else to go. She wasn't used to church hopping, plus she now believed that other churches wouldn't be any different.
She gradually resigned her numerous responsibilities in the church, and decided to remain an ordinary member.
She attended a mid-week service one evening. Reverend Saul was shocked to see her enter from the pulpit. She was usually late, he was about beginning his message for the day.
He wasn't pleased to see her, he had thought she wouldn't attend at all, since she was not used to being late. But he gathered courage and began his message.
Sobrina knew Pastor Melvin had left the church, but she wasn't sure where he went. She also knew how he had helped build WUCC from the scratch, using all he had.
She was disappointed by the things Reverend Saul began to say about him. Pastor Melvin was the title of his message. He accused him of many things, and said he left the church because he had found a new relationship, and wanted a place he could be free to do whatever he wanted with the girl. He ridiculed the doctrine of his new church and said they were heresies. In closing, he said he knew he had gossipers in the church, who would run off and inform Pastor Melvin about all he had said.
In Sobrina's mind, the church went to dust. She could no longer stay. She knew Pastor Melvin was dating only her, and he had asked her to remain in WUCC. So why would Reverend Saul be lying so much about a man who had given his all to build him a church?
Reverend Saul's wife later invited Sobrina over, and told her how Pastor Melvin had asked her to fast and pray with him for over a month, seeking God's will for marriage over another girl in the church. She said it was during the time Sobrina was away for National Service. She said how God didn't permit Pastor Melvin to get married to the girl, and so he had found another girl from Pharmacy department in the University.
"You mean he never told you? And you say he's your friend?", she questioned Sobrina.
"I will confront him about it".
"No, don't. The fate of relationships always lie with the girl not the men". The Reverend's wife advised.
Sobrina was angry, she visited Pastor Melvin that afternoon and questioned him bitterly. He chose to neither deny nor confirmed the accusations. He didn't apologize either.
Sobrina told him about how she had suffered during his four months disappearance, but he was unsympathetic.
"Do you know how old I am, Sobrina? Nothing will probably happen between us. You think I don't have a plan for my life?", he snapped in anger, raising his voice.
Sobrina saw that he was more concerned about his age. She, herself was approaching thirty, and had been waiting for him as she had promised to. While he had been busy scarring other men away from her life for over seven years, and without the intention of marrying her?
She discovered the actual cause of his disappearance, and he didn't even bother to inform her.
Pastor Melvin left her where she was seated at their meeting place, and went home.
Her heart was broken. She had started praying and fasting over a month ago, for him to get a job soon, so they could get married.
Sobrina wept until dark before she walked home. She stopped the fasting and prayer, and never forgave him.
