Chapter 68 SWAT THE LOVE
Osano had failed to murder Sobrina, therefore Pastor Davies got desperate. Miraya was on his neck, and her brother was at the other end making threats. He had promised to make things right and must do everything in his power to make it happen.
There was only one call of action left. He sent his men to rob Pastor Melvin as a warning sign.
The thieves broke into Pastor Melvin's house while he was at work, and took all his valuables. They also made it look like they were members of Osano's circular cult, by leaving him a note of harassment, warning him to let Sobrina go. Osano's discomfort in the whole matter was not a secret in the church. He was behaving noticeably abnormal and constantly bitter.
Pastor Melvin on the other hand had been hoping for Sobrina's demise, either by Osano's hand or the action of the underside of Gracedome. Even though he pretended - in the open - as if he was thoroughly in love with her. It was frustrating that she had become one hard bird to hunt. He hadn't expected things to last for this long.
Sobrina went to visit him, to make up for the fight they'd had at the church five days ago and one day after surviving Osano and Pastor Davies' series of attacks.
She was surprised when he refused to open the door at his house. Sobrina was alarmed.
"Go away", Pastor Melvin shouted from within. The robbery and warning had happened just yesterday.
"Is everything alright?", Sobrina questioned from outside the door. Her voice was filled with worry.
"I said go away", but Sobrina couldn't leave. She kept knocking on the door.
"If you don't leave, I'll open that door and beat you up", Pastor Melvin barked. Sobrina was now excessively worried.
"What is going on?", she questioned, while still knocking on his door, gently.
Pastor Melvin opened the door a little and began to swat her with a broom, while still hidden behind his door. When she still wouldn't leave, he came out and flogged her repeatedly with it, and returned to his room. He refused to open the door again after that, even though Sobrina was now in tears, pleading to understand what had gone wrong.
"Sobrina Pastor Davies is not behind this, neither is Reverend Saul. Do not spoil things in this church", Pastor Melvin shouted after her, as she was leaving. And he was right.
Unknowing to Sobrina, this was all his doing in revenge for her getting married to someone else. He had felt humiliated by that action and set all this in motion just to get back at her.
He reported back to Pastor Davies about what he had done, and Pastor Davies was very satisfied to hear about the turning of the tide. But the battle line was already drawn, there was no room for taking chances. As far as he was concerned, Pastor Melvin could still secretly return to Sobrina.
He called a meeting among the lower members of the underside, and passed on the news about Sobrina's health. He ordered them to spread the news among other members of the church. He informed them to start treating her like shit in public.
Sobrina went to midweek evening service the following day, and strange things began to happen. Everyone was staring at her like they had seen a ghost. They wouldn't look away when she caught them staring, instead, they shook their head from side to side as if in pity.
Thirty minutes later, Pastor Davies walked into the church and began to preach. A lady ran outside, wailing, crying very loudly and dejectedly.
Pastor Davies was also steaming in anger. "I will destroy you", he screamed into the microphone, deviating from the message.
Sobrina noticed all but didn't understand. They were trying to scare her out of the church, since they had failed in all their attempts.
Other ladies of the underside who had fallen into sexual relationships with Pastor Davies, or other male members of the underside, were scared stiff. They thought Pastor Melvin would really get married to Sobrina, setting a typical standard, which would result to no one of their kind marrying them, as they were taught. It was one of the the statutes of the underside that ladies must get married only from amongst them.
Sobrina went to speak with Pastor Davies after service.
"You don't know who is doing anything Sobrina", Pastor Davies said as she approached.
"Doing what Pastor?",
"Why are you here?",
"Why did you throw me out when I came to your house few days ago?",
"You insulted me",
What? he had asked her to stop crying, but she couldn't control herself, because she was heartbroken. Osano - the perpetrator - had been sitting on one corner in his house staring at her with disdain. So how come? when did she insult him? She had noticed before now that Pastor Davies lied at will, so she just turned around and left the church building.
As she was walking home, two similar sayings kept ringing in her heart - "Sobrina Pastor Davies is not behind this neither is Reverend Saul", and "You don't know who is doing anything Sobrina". She became seriously afraid for her life and couldn't walk alone in darkness, all the way to her place off the campus.
She decided to sleep in someone's room, in one of the hostels. She went in search of a first year lady she'd met few weeks ago on her way back to the University, from home.
Sobrina met the lady on the stairs of her hostel, around the area for public gathering. There were female students scattered all over the place, trying to connect to the University's Wi-Fi, either using their laptops or smartphone, as the lady Sobrina came to look for, was doing. Sobrina was visibly shivering and requested to seat by her young friend.
"Can I sleep in your room tonight?... I don't feel too well", she said.
"Of course my dear, you're always welcome", the lady responded.
Sobrina looked at the entrance of the hostel, and saw that she'd been followed by few ladies from the church.
They were standing at the widely open entrance, staring at her. They were also whispering among themselves.
Sobrina's already damaged mental health went to worst, she caught herself trying to hide and applied all courage to remain calm.
She couldn't sleep that night, neither did the lady she'd gone to visit. She kept struggling in her sleep, making weird sounds, and the lady had to stay awake to watch over her. To steady her, the lady was constantly gently patting Sobrina on the back, like a baby.
