Today Lucas and I were working on the nursery for Jake. Lisa and John decided that they needed more quality time with their grandson, so he is currently at their house.
Even though both Lucas and I were supposed to be working on the nursery, he called Brian over to help because I was only allowed to read out the instructions to build the changing table, rocking chair and the crib. I wasn't even allowed to paint his room because the fumes weren't good for the babies.
Brian had been here for a few hours seeing as it was already mid-day and they were trying to get everything done today, which would be easier but they're barely listening to my instructions on how to make the rocking chair because it was 'so easy' .
"Dude are you sure it goes there?" Brian asks Lucas.
"Of course I'm sure. Where else would it go?"
I don't know maybe in the right place.
"Bro that doesn't look right." Brian said looking at the picture of the chair on the box.
"Well where do you think it goes then?"
"I don't know! I am a businessman, not Bob the Builder."
Seeing as I'm not allowed to do anything I set the instructions on the floor and went into our bedroom in search of my phone. Once I found it I decided to call Adriana.
After a few rings she picked up.
"I'm sorry the number you are trying to reach has been discontinued due to the absence of a best friend."
"Adri I'm sorry. A lot has happened and I've been really busy. Please hear me out."
She sighs but doesn't reply.
"Please I need you right now."
"Fine spill." I smiled knowing she would be won over since she loves gossip.
"So it all started after we went to the club because Derek cheated on me..."
I told her the whole story only leaving out the part about us not actually knowing each other.
"So let me get this straight, you slept with an old friend of yours, who happens to be a billionaire, and you're now living in his penthouse, pregnant with his twins and a almost step-mother to his child that he never knew he had."
"Long story short yeah." I reply lying back on the bed.
"Wow. That's fucked up boo."
"I know right." I feel bad for lying to everyone but I'm scared that telling them the truth will make them look at me differently, like a whore or something. Ending the call with her I walk back to Jake's room to see the boys reading the instructions to the crib, the rocking chair finished sitting in the corner.
"You see what "
"What time are we going to get Jake from your mom's house?"
"As soon as we finish the crib and changing table, so in about an hour and a half two hours." I look at the clock and see that it's 5:34, I go into the kitchen and eat some leftover stir fry with orange juice.
After I finished eating I took a nap on the couch only to be awaken by the front door closing. Checking the clock I realize that I took a two hour nap.
"Lucas." I call out into the house.
"Yeah?"
"Are you done?" I yelled back
"Yeah, I'll be right down." I waited a few moments before Lucas came down with a streak of blue paint in his hair.
"Lucas, you have some paint in you hair from this morning."
"No I was doing some retouching just now. It'll have to wait we have to go. Now." he said with an urgency walking to the front door. I followed him.
"What's wrong? Did something happen to Jake?"
"No, Maggie texted me and we need to go do some damage control."
When we got to his parents house I understood what he meant. You could hear the yelling from all the way outside and the door was closed and everything.
We walked inside to find Lisa and Melissa in a yelling contest.
"Why must you think that I always need your help? I've been doing just fine on my own mother!" I hear who sounded like Melissa yell.
"Well sorry if I don't want my daughter to never find love." Lisa rebutted.
"I don't need love mother! I am happy just the way that I am. I have a successful career and right now that's all I need."
"No, what you need is someone to love you."
"You pushing random men my way isn't going to help!" I single tear fell down her face, she made no move to wipe it away. Lucas walks over to comfort his sister.
"You are the only child of mine who isn't in some sort of relationship."
"Of course you're going to compare me to them. Just because I didn't want to be a interior designer like Liz or be some business mogul like Lucas."
"I just wish you would do something more in life." Lisa pleads.
"I am doing something more in life mom. I'm teaching children, I'm doing something that I love."
"You are a substitute. You don't have a permanent spot and I just want to make sure you have some one to look after you."
"Well you don't have to anymore because I've been offered a full-time teaching job-" Lisa cuts her off.
"That's wonderful but-"
"In California. I've been contemplating whether I should take it or not but this is just the break I need."
I've never seen either of them act this way before, Lucas has told me that they don't always see eye to eye but this is something new.
"Both of you stop this. Mel please don't be so rash, have you really thought this through?" John asks her in a soft tone.
"I really have and this is such a huge opportunity for me. It's been such a hard decision for me and this conversation gave me the push I needed."
"Are you happy dear?" he asks her.
"I really am."
"Then I support you." John goes over and hugs her.
"You may not be my real dad, but you're the best I could ever ask for." she hugs him back. Letting go of John she walks out of the house and shuts the door behind her.
"Oh, this is all my fault. I never meant for this to happen, oh John I just want her to be happy."
"Darling she is happy, why can't you see that?."
"Mom you know she's never been the type to settle." Lucas says.
"I know but still, I just thought that by giving her a little push she could find a man who really loves her."
"In her own time dear." John says as Maggie walks down the stairs with Jake in his carrier and his baby bag on her shoulder.
"Here is your child." she hands Lucas the carrier.
"Thanks Maggie. Well we should get going now, c'mon Jess." he takes my hand and leads me out of the house.
When we get back on the road I ask a question that's been on my mind for a while, "John isn't your father?"
"Nope. My dad hasn't been around for a while."
"I'm so sorry, I can't completely relate but know what it's like coming from a household where both parents are divorced." I say thinking of my parents.
"Do you ever talk to your dad?" he asks glancing at me.
"Not as much as I wish I did. I can't bring myself to visit him though, he has his own family now I would just feel like I'm intruding on this new life he built for himself."
"What do you mean?"
"He has a new wife and they have their own kids together. Being there makes me feel like I'm intruding in on a life I have no place in." we get back to the apartment and walk inside, Jake wines meaning he's hungry.
I go into the kitchen and start making his bottle. Once it was finished I went into the living room where Lucas was playing with Jake, I hand Lucas the bottle.
"Do you wanna talk about it?" he asks referring to our previous conversation.
"It's a long story." I warn him.
"Go for it."
"It started when I was sixteen, my dad started getting more and more distant from us. Going out late and coming home early in the morning, some time he would leave for days, I remember questioning him about it once but he said it was business. I knew my mom wouldn't divorce him because she always saw the good in him. When I was seventeen I heard my parents arguing in the kitchen, Jasmine told me to leave it alone but I needed to know what was going on, I wish I never went down. They were arguing because my dad had gotten one of his co-workers pregnant, he's been having an affair with her since I was sixteen." I take a deep breath and continue, "My mom got them to go to couples therapy, not that it worked, if anything it made it worse. They finally divorced a little after I graduated high school, my dad has tried to keep in contact with me and Jasmine but I just can't bring myself to see him anymore."
"Why not?"
"I've always been daddy's little girl, and seeing him do the things he did with me to some other little girl with a new family, it hurts. I won't put myself through anymore pain."
"Let's put Jake to bed." he smiles not wanting to dwell on the concept thankfully.
We put Jake to bed and then get into bed ourselves. I fall asleep in Lucas' arms and dreamt of nothingness.
It's been about a month since Mel announced she was leaving for California, and she's been gone for two weeks now. Lisa was heartbroken to see her daughter leave, she keeps on blaming herself for driving her away to the other side of the country.
I personally don't think Lisa made Mel leave. She was offered a job, one that she's always wanted, and I guess she was just deciding if she should take it or not. At least that's what I told Lisa to make her feel a bit better.
Thankfully Mel promised to be here for the birth of the twins. We have been texting and calling each other whenever we get the chance. She isn't officially starting until the new school year, but they wanted her over there to get used to the environment and figure out her living arrangements.
Lucas and I just left the OB/GYN and are currently on our way to get Jake from John and Lisa's house.
"Are you excited?" I ask Lucas.
"For what?"
"We get to find out the genders of the babies next visit." I say ecstatic, I've been waiting to find out the gender for so long, and as the weeks come closer the more excited I get.
"I'm not sure if I want to know the genders."
Hold the phone, he what?
"What do you mean you don't want to know?"
"I'm not sure if I want to be surprised yet. Don't you like surprises?"
"Well yeah but I would rather know if I'm pushing a girl or a boy out of my vag-"
"I get it." he interrupts me, not wanting to hear the word.
"So you'll put your dick in it but won't let me say it?"
"Precisely."
"Oh come on it's not that bad." I try to convince him.
"Why are you doing this to me?"
"Come on say it with me. Va-gi-na."
"Stop."
"My coochie."
"Jessica."
"My lady bits."
"Seriously."
"My hoo-ha."
"I'm going to ignore you now."
"Female genitalia"
All he does is sigh and focus on the road.
"Alright, I'm done now."
"Thank you." he says after a few moments.
I lean over and whisper in his ear, "Pussy." and sit back down.
"Really, Jess, really." I can see him looking at me out of the corner of my eye.
"Okay now I'm done. For real this time."
We start up a new conversation for the rest of the ride to Lisa's house to get Jake.
When we reach the house and Lucas takes the key out of the ignition and we walk up the porch steps and ring the bell. John opens the door and ushers us inside.
"Lisa's in the kitchen with Jake." he says walking towards the kitchen.
As we get closer we can hear Jake's noises, now that he's ten weeks old, two and a half months, he's started cooing and smiling at people.
"Hey Lisa, how are you?" I ask walking into the kitchen.
"I've been better, that's for sure." she replies, handing Jake to Lucas.
"Hey mom." Lucas gives her a kiss on the cheek.
"Hey baby." she smiles slightly.
"Thanks for watching him you guys." I tell them both smiling gratefully.
"It's no problem, anytime you guys want to bring him by for some alone time please do. It's great being able to spend some time with one of my grandchildren." Lisa responds.
"Well we had better get going now. We'll see you guys later."
When we arrive home I put Jake in his playpen as Lucas and I sit on the couch in the living room.
"Lucas, we might have a slight problem."
"What?" he turns to face me.
"So my family has no idea about any of this. Jake, my pregnancy, the engagement, you. Thanksgiving is coming up and I always go down for it and Christmas. I can't do that though because," I gesture to my enlarged stomach.
"We didn't think this far through did we."
"Nope."
"How about we just tell her about me."
"Everything?"
"No, just you have a boyfriend and you want to spend this holiday with him."
"What about Christmas?"
"You're meeting my family."
"This could work." I nod my head in approval.
"I know, I'm a genius." he smirks.
"How modest of you." I say sarcastically.
After a few minutes I walk into the kitchen and start making Jakes bottle. Bringing out the lukewarm bottle I give it to Lucas who already has Jake on his lap ready to feed him.
As he starts to feed him I decide to have some leftover samosas. They were the really good vegetarian ones, with an even ratio of potatoes, peas and spices.
"Lucas, do you want any of the samosas?" I ask because there was four of them and even though I could finish them I thought it would be nice to ask.
"Uh, yeah just one thanks." he yells back from the living room.
Damn.
I pop them in the toaster oven for five minutes because putting them in the microwave makes the bottom a little soggy. When they're done I put all four on one plate instead of using two if Lucas is only having one samosa.
"Here you go." I say handing him the plate and taking Jake out of his hands.
"No it's fine you eat and I'll put Jake to bed." he said putting the plate on the coffee table reaching his hands out for Jake.
"Nope." I say walking up the stairs with Jake in my arms.
"You seem really sassy today." he remarks when I come back downstairs.
"Is there a problem with that?" I ask.
"No I just feel like I'm under some sort of sass attack." he finishes off his samosa.
"A sass attack, really."
"Yes really, you are very sassy today Jess."
"Well I doubt that I'll be stopping to be honest, so you might wanna get used to it big boy." I take a bite out of my samosa.
"Oh really now?"
"Who's being sassy now?" I ask finishing the samosa.
"Oh whatever, still not as bad as you are."
"Well you're just going to have to deal with it then, now won't you."
"Really now?" he asks me raising an eyebrow, a glint in his eyes.
"Yeah." I huff defiantly. I could feel his breath fanning my face, I hadn't realised that we were so close.
"Okay then I will." he leaned in closer so that our lips touched.
His slightly chapped lips moved against mine, he had one hand gripping my waist and the other was in my hair. I moved my hands to cup his face moaning softly when he bit my lip. I've never felt this way while kissing someone before, like I was on cloud nine, not even when I was dating Derek did I feel this kind of spark.
That moment of ecstasy and adrenaline when everything feels just right.
I gave a small groan of protest when he started to pull away. Our foreheads touch and I look into his eyes only to find him staring back at me. I bite my lip waiting for his response to the kiss, even though he initiated it, what if it wasn't as good as he hoped.
What if I wasn't as good as he hoped. My stomach dropped at the thought.
"Jess." he finally spoke. This is it, the moment of truth.
"I don't want you to have to worry about our relationship or what ever this is. I want us to be official."
"What are you saying?" I whisper.
"I'm not saying we have to get married right now, but I want to be able to call you my girlfriend." he says as if he's afraid of me rejecting him.
"I would love to call you my boyfriend Lucas." I smile.
"Oh thank God." he gives out a breath of relief.
