97- The chapter with the conversation about relationships
Rose
We walked together to a Pizzeria in downtown Rochester, and soon we were sharing a generous pepperoni pizza at a table in one corner of the restaurant.
" I hope you're eating better in college and not just surviving on pizza," my mom warned as she helped herself to a piece, "your credit card is maxed out enough that you're eating a lot better than you are at home, where your dad and I are too lazy to cook.”
" You know, if I was really pregnant, at least my son would have a father who loves to cook and does it very well " I commented nonchalantly before biting into a slice of pizza " I love this place, they make the best pizza in town!”
" He cooks? Wow, we should invite him to cook dinner " my mom commented making me laugh " What's so funny? I'm serious, now that he's going to be your boyfriend we should get closer. Inviting his sister for dinner would be a great idea.”
" Oh my God, mom! Haven't you forgotten that yet? " I laughed at that comment.
" How can I forget those blue eyes? Kylie is pretty, but she just got out of a complicated relationship, I don't know if it's good to get involved in that " she mentioned the cousin Alex introduced on the trip.
" At least she's out of the relationship, as far as I know, Amber is still in her straight relationship " I pointed out, smiling at the nonconformist pout my mom made.
I went back to concentrating on my pizza, enjoying the silence, but my mom didn't leave the subject aside for so long.
" Are you going to tell me what changed your mind about Davis or not?”
" I think it was a bit of everything. I don't know, I still feel insecure, but after that scare and the way he reacted, and especially after Jack's decision about Alex, I saw that maybe it was worth a try. But I'll still talk to him about it, I changed my mind about not being exclusive, but I don't know if he thinks the same " I tried to summarize everything that went through my mind in the last few days.
" Your father's decision? How could that have influenced you? " Addison frowned, looking confused by that sentence.
" 'Mom, all this time I've seen what an amazing life you lead. I mean, you're almost forty and you didn't go after tying yourself to one person, on the contrary, you focused on studying, building a good career and a stable life " I explained " I kind of got inspired by you and I didn't want to have a boyfriend so soon. Not when I can experience amazing things before I get tied down to one person.”
My mom stared at me in silence for endless minutes until she put the slice of pizza she had taken back in the box, wiping her hands on a napkin.
" 'Let's get this straight, you were basing your entire romantic life on the two most screwed up people in this area? " she retorted.
" What?”
" Rose, you think your father and I were single by choice? Daughter, we've been bouncing from failed relationship to failed relationship for the last eighteen years, looking for someone who understands our peculiar situation, so much so that your father was quick to put a ring on the finger of the first one who really accepted us,' she glared at me.
" But you always made it sound so amazing to be able to do whatever you wanted, even today you go out together to clubs and…”
" Daughter, if your father had met Alex eighteen years ago, he would have married her. And if I had met Christian's sister before....”
" For God's sake, Addison Miller, forget Amber! You'd be your own son-in-law's sister-in-law, and our family is weird enough as it is!”
We both burst out laughing at that conclusion, making the mood even more relaxed, despite the tenor of that conversation.
" One thing is for sure, if a guy reacts the way he did when the girl he has no commitment to thinks she's pregnant, that guy is worth it " My mom commented after we recovered from our laughing crisis.
I gave a small smile in response, turning my attention back to the pizza, feeling lighter with that conversation, making me make my decision, even though I feared making a fool of myself.
