Chapter 17 Bankcruptcy
We suddenly heard police siren sounding the venue. I surpassed the crowd and walked up toward the main gate, Some Policemen were trying to enter and by the look of thing I could tell that everyone was nervous. I immediately went to talk with them. As they tried to enter, I stopped them and asked.
“Is there any problem Officer, today is my brother’s engagement.”
“We have an arrest warrant against a person and we found out that he is here.” one of the Officer responded.
“Against who?” I asked
“Utkarsh Dhiman,” the officer had said, and I felt as if the ground were slipping under my feet.
“Sir, I think you are misunderstanding,” I said as I tried pursuing them not to enter. But they didn’t try to understand.
“We are absolutely sure its him, please step aside and let us arrest him,” the Officer said. I was left feeling stunned. Every part of my body froze. I was unable to make sense of the situation. Ishita started asking me about the reason for the police’s arrival. I couldn’t answer her. The Officer handed me the arrest warrant. Then they went to the main hall and handcuffed him.
Suddenly a cry broke the silence in the hall, it was Saanvi, she was shouting in pain as Utkarsh was being handcuffed and dragged away I could feel her pain but couldn’t at the moment do anything to help but support her. She kept nudging me and crying.
“Avinash, what’s this going on. Somebody please help him”, she said in anguish. I couldn’t react at all. She kept screaming and crying out for help but none of the guest could do anything and one by one they left. Our lives had once again came to a standstill.
...
After driving everyone back home, I went to the police station with Dad and Uncle. Ishita was in no condition anywhere so Aparna and Ishita stayed behind and took care of her. I was concerned, thinking what might have happened to Utkarsh that led to his sudden arrest. Something was wrong there was no way Utkarsh could be guilty of any crime.
I entered the Colaba Police Station. The officer-in-charge, who arrested him, was sitting there. We went up to him and asked him about the case.
“Good Evening, Sir.”
“Good evening, come to have a seat.” the Officer said “We want to know why did you arrest Utkarsh?” Uncle
asked.
“He has done a fraudulent bankruptcy,” Officer said. “Bankruptcy,” Uncle’s asked in absolute surprise.
“Yes, we have proof of that. He has stolen fifty Lakhs from another person’s account,” The Officer explained.
“Wait, fifty lakhs.” I asked loudly, “But he can’t do that.” “Don’t be shocked about it, he has already admitted his
crime,” the Officer replied.
“On which date did the incident took place?” My Dad asked/
“On Wednesday, at about nine-thirty p.m.,” the Officer replied.
None of us could say anything as none of us saw Utkarsh till he came home late at night. I told them to go and take rest and that I’d take care of it. The Officer said to me, “Arrange a lawyer who would understand the case better.” I called Aparna to take care of uncle and dad as they were worried. I asked the police, if it was possible to meet Utkarsh, who was in confinement. They refused me and told me that I could only meet him under the presence of a lawyer.
At that moment, I remembered that Vikas’s father was an advocate. I immediately contacted him and asked his father for help, he agreed immediately and told me to wait there.
“Hello Uncle,” I greeted him. Vikas came along. “Hello Beta Avi,” he replied
“Sir, I told you about Utkarsh,” I said
“Yes I know, Vikas told me.” Vikas’s dad said.
He talked with the Officer and discussed everything related to. the case. Then Vikas’s dad asked about the date for the court proceeding, the Officer said, “On 17th May”, which was just two days later. After which Vikas’s dad asked too se Utkarsh and the officer showed us the way to his cell. After reaching his cell the officer opened the door and removed his handcuffs. Utkarsh ran towards me and hugged me. He already looked broken and lost, I took him by the shoulder and hugged him. .
“Utkarsh don’t worry, I am here,” I told him. As he kept on crying.
“Brother thank god you are here, please get me out of here,” He begged us, to help get him out of this mess.
“Don’t worry Utkarsh. He is your lawyer, my friend Vikas’s Dad. He will help you with your case. He also has gotten every detail from the police of your case,” I said.
“Now listen to him and explain to him everything that has happened,” I added.
“Okay brother,” he said.
Vikas’s dad asked him Utkarsh to tell him everything about the case, what was he doing, why was he out so late, had he or had he not taken the money.
...
“Everything was hazy Avi, everything was going smoothly until last week when my boss got replaced by someone else, someone ruder and eviler than my previous one. He would give me more pressure about the job. Until one day he suddenly asked me to transfer twenty five lakh each to two different account numbers. .
He had given me the details of the accounts on a piece of paper. Not only was it an important job but also he had given it to me on the day Saanvi and I had a fight. When I was transferring the amounts to the accounts I messed up big time bro, and I only found out about it when my had boss called me that night to scream at me for what had happened, which resulted in me being fired from my job,” Utkarsh finally told us the whole truth. Somehow I had a gut feeling that Utkarsh was being framed, but how?
I had to look for answers to make sure he’s freed from all this. I could see that he couldn’t take this , I couldn’t leave him here where he’d be in constant pain. My mind was trying to figure out what to do. I decided to keep quiet and wait until the court proceeding begins. I had to look for the answers in order to save Utkarsh from this mess.
