Chapter 3 New Journey
I began a new chapter, a new journey of my life before entering the main gate. An experience which we can never forget, a basket full of memories that I will cherish forever, this is ‘College Life‘ I deftly touched the ground, seeking blessing for the almighty. It was a dream come true for me; getting admission at my dream college, I tried so hard for the past year. From my childhood to my school life, my life was sailing smooth, and further I prayed to god. To keep me in his good books, forever and always. The sun capped in layers of gold and crimson, setting an aura of contentment. It was a special day for me, and Utkarsh as well. The only thing that upset me was that, Chhavi was not here with me. Six months back, we promised each other to be their as we step into a new life together. Nevertheless, I was determined that one day, everything will be alright.
As I entered college, I saw many unknown faces on the left side of the gate. A flex was hatched on, welcoming freshers to the college. Some of the students were standing alongside the hatchet and asked us to attend the orientation that was about to begin in ten minutes at the Auditorium.
The program started with a cultural show by the college’s dance society, and then an introduction speech was given by the Dean. Then, the program went forward with some impressive singing and Bhangra performances. After the briefing in the Auditorium, we were taken to the back lawn to plant a tree. It was the college’s tradition, every new student of this campus is mandated to plant a tree, with the environmental consideration that Dean mentioned on his note.
We were given refreshments and then were asked to attend the first lecture by the HOD. I don’t remember making any new friends that day, as I was overwhelmed by what was happening around me. Moreover, Utkarsh was with me, and I enjoyed it to the fullest.
A lady in a beautiful Punjabi suit introduced herself, “Students, I am Riya Sharma, your accountancy teacher. I welcome the students of B.COM first year to HR COLLEGE OF COMMERCE AND ECONOMICS, and wish you all the best for your future!”
“Thanks,” around 40 students in the class replied together.
This was the start of a new phase of our lives.
...
Actually, it was just one class; regular classes would start from tomorrow. Utkarsh and I looked at the timetable on the notice board to check the timings and class schedule when I heard Chhavi’s name from a girl on call and was standing next to us. I got curious to know, was she talking about her, or was it just being reminded in my mind.
“Hi, Sorry to disturb you but, were you talking to Chhavi Basu?” I asked her.
“Yes, but who are you?” she replied
“HI, my name is Avinash, I am Chhavi’s school mate,” I answered.
“Avinash Sampath, right?” I am Ishita. Chhavi is my cousin,” she said in excitement and shook hands with me,
“Yes, how do you know my full name?” I asked. “Chhavi, told me about you, you are in a relationship,
right?”
“Yes, we are, but there is little misunderstanding going on between us.”
“Yaa, I know, because of that only Uncle is not allowing her to come to this college. They are trying to get a seat in some other college,” She revealed.
“Are you serious?” I asked her in panic, something started to bother me from inside. I feel lost and confused. My love life was lurking like a ball of tangled yarn. Some parts were available, useable, but the rest were a mess—that mess which is going endlessly with sorrow.
“Yes, it is true she was talking to me about this on the phone just now. “ She composed her words, “ But don’t worry, all will be good, uncle’s mood is a little off these days, it will wash off. Give it some time it will be fine.”
“It’s been one week; I don’t know what to do.” I shared my feelings with her.
“Let’s do one thing, I have an idea.” Mukti suggested a plan.
...
I rang the doorbell of Chhavi’s house. I wanted to confront her Dad head on, but Chhavi opened the door. It
15 was awkward for me, and she seemed uneasy to see me.
“Chhavi, can I talk to your Dad, for a second?” I asked with a brave voice, but genuinely I was terrified inside. She opened the door a little more, and I saw her Dad.
“Sir, we didn’t start on a good note. I know that my actions have brought dishonor to your family. Your daughter has been a great friend to me since class 10. And from her, I have learned that a true friend is a person who makes your life better. I request you not to let her change the college just because of me.
Just give me a second chance. I promise I will be the bestest friend your daughter will ever had.” I said all the things that ran in my mind in one go.
After a long, tense minute, her father said, “Don’t worry, son. You are a good guy. There are very few people who are so valiant and dare to prove their friendship, you are one of them, and I am proud of you. Chhavi’s told me about you and your family. She is lucky to have a friend like you. She will join you for college tomorrow. All the best,” Her Dad agreed to our relationship. I felt so relieved and thrilled; all the worries just got washed away. And I felt like I was on cloud9.
