I, like Chiara, watched in shock as my petite Josie just collapsed into Jayden's arms. Everything in me contracted at the sight of her and I had the feeling that I couldn't breathe anymore.
"Chiara, ask the front desk for a bucket of ice cubes and bring towels!" ordered Jayden, who was carrying my mate in the direction of the folding bed. "And you, help me!" He looked over at me, but neither I nor Chiara were able to move. Frozen, we looked at the lifeless looking body in his arms.
"Tell me, are you crazy?!" he asked us growling and got a malicious look. "Move yourselves!" He growled so menacingly that Chiara immediately ran out of the trailer while I stumbled over to him and unfolded the bed, shaking.
He put her down carefully and gently pulled her jacket off, which made me growl a little to myself as he watched his hands touch the bare skin of her arms. "Are you serious?" he asked me incredulously, looking deep into my eyes. "Sorry," I mumbled, trying to suppress my instincts as best I could. "What's wrong with her?" I asked him sheepishly and carefully took her delicate hand in mine, the touch of which made me wince from the heat.
"She's transforming," he said seriously, putting his hand gently on her wrist. "And her pulse is weak." I got a sinking feeling in my stomach and wanted to sit down, but Jayden firmly held my arm. "You won't let her go through this alone. Take her hand, I'll check on Chiara!"
He quickly disappeared from the trailer, leaving me alone with her. I knew nothing more than the sight of her paralyzed me and I started stroking her hand in a daze, hoping it would do her some good.
"You did a great job!" Chiara snapped at me, entering the trailer before Jayden. "Reproaches don't get us anywhere," Jayden said to her and put the bucket with the ice cubes down next to me to dip two towels in it, which he then carefully wrapped around Josephine's calves.
"Please go out now, she needs rest." Jayden gave us both a serious look and I cursed myself for the needless jealousy that was bubbling up inside me. One last look at Jo and I ran outside with Chiara, even if I just wanted to stay close to her.
"Sorry, I'm just-" "I know," I interrupted the dark blonde, knowing full well how angry she was at me, I was even more so myself. "I'm sure she'll be fine, after all she's a lot tougher than me."
Chiara put her hand on my shoulder soothingly while I leaned against the trailer with my nerves exhausted. "I'm not worried about that." "Then what about?" "About how she's going to react and if she'll ever forgive me."
I looked down, embarrassed for looking so fragile in front of her, but while this dark blonde was extremely annoying most of the time, she was also compassionate and absolutely uplifting in the worst of situations. "Sure she will. I forgave Jayden too. Once she's a wolf she won't get enough of you," she smiled at me, really making me smile too.
I would have loved to have returned a spell to her. Something like 》You were easy to get too《 but I bit it back because I had changed over the past few weeks.
"What is that... smell?", she asked suddenly and looked around questioningly. I looked at her in confusion and immediately realized how pale she suddenly became. "Ethan, I have to-" "What???" I asked, and as soon as I said the question, she threw up all over my bare feet, and the warm broth gave off such a disgusting smell that I immediately started choking on it mouth to breathe.
"We're standing alone in a huge empty parking lot and you can't miss me!?" I then grumbled, but when I saw how bad she was afterwards, I stopped immediately and put my arm around her reassuringly to hold her in case she threatened to tip over. "Was on purpose," she murmured with a fake smile, clutching her stomach.
"It must be the stress and the bad food from those cheap gas stations," she then hissed, leaning against the trailer next to me. "Wait, I'll get you a glass of water."
She nodded her thanks and I immediately ran in to quickly fill her a mug. I could understand her well, it all got on my stomach and I would have liked to just throw up with so much crap I had built up.
The first thing I felt was the cold around my calves and a hand on my forehead. Normally I probably would have jumped up or winced, but I was so exhausted and confused I could hardly open my eyes.
My eyes fell on the ceiling of the caravan and I could relax immediately because I knew that I wasn't lying on the field alone and freezing to death miserably. "Hey," I then heard the dark voice of Jayden next to me, who was also the one who had his hand on my forehead.
"Am I dead?" I croaked, grinning tiredly at the smile he gave me when I asked. "No, everything's fine," he said very calmly and then carefully grasped my wrist as if he wanted to feel my pulse. "Where's Ethan," I breathed, immediately feeling uncomfortable at the thought of him, but something inside me just wanted him around.
"I sent him out with Chiara so you can rest and not have to witness those annoying fights." He gently brushed my hair back from my face and then got up to walk over to the table and pour something into a mug.
"Drink this and rest, if anything happens, we're at the door." "I can barely whisper and you expect me to yell for you?" I asked him in confusion, sure no one out there could hear my exhausted mumbling. "Trust me, I'll hear you," he smiled, handing me the water while helping me up with his other hand. I was so thirsty that I choked on the end of the mug and he patted me lightly on the back.
Only when I was lying down again did he move away, put the mug on the table and was about to get out when I cleared my throat briefly to get his attention. "Thanks," I breathed, and I really meant it. I firmly believed I was going to die, but I had people around me, at least one, who took better care of me than my father or ex ever did. "You're one of us now," he winked at me, wincing when Ethan suddenly stumbled in and grabbed the water bottle.
Along with it, such an unpleasant odor came into this box that I had to pull myself together not to throw up. "Chiara threw up, I wanted her-" He cut himself off when his eyes met mine and the sight of him made me so hot again that I even got dizzy.
"I'll do it," Jayden told him, grabbing the bottle of water and a mug before taking one last look at me and exiting the trailer.
"Hey," Ethan whispered shyly to me, slowly walking towards me while I glanced at his feet and wrinkled my nose. "Chiara...", he explained after following my gaze and rolled his eyes in annoyance.
"Is she sick too?" I wondered myself about my question. I was supposed to yell at him or ignore him for what I was going through, but I had already grown so attached to the dark blonde that her well-being had become really important to me. "She must have eaten something wrong."
He shrugged unknowingly and now stood right in front of me, eyeing me worriedly and putting his hand on mine. I wanted to pull her away, wanted so many things answered first, but I was still feeling so bad that I didn't even have the strength to start a discussion at that moment. In addition, the sight of him and his closeness somehow did me good, as if I could finally relax again.
"Will you lie down with me?" I asked him in a weak voice, sliding backwards a bit, but I noticed that it would have been far too narrow for two people. "I'd rather sit down." He looked at me with a gleam in his eyes and settled on the lower side to take my feet on his lap which he began massaging.
"You stink, Ethan," I chuckled, looking at him exhaustedly while he shook his head with a grin and cursed softly at Chiara. "You smell all the better for that," he whispered, looking deep into my eyes.
I wondered if he was really serious, after all I had been sitting on the dirty fields half the night and sweating without end, but when I curiously tilted my head to the side to smell the crook of my arm, I immediately noticed something strange on.
I had an odor on me that developed in my nostrils and immediately brought Ethan to my mind. His natural perfume coated my entire body and I looked at him in confusion, frowning.
