Chapter 31
POV Aiden
Paula was still groggy from sedation, but we hoped she could help us figure out what was going on between her and her wolf.
Miss Evens and I sat in chairs next to her trying not to scare her anymore that she was. “Paula, can you hear me?” I asked.
“Where am I?” She asked.
“We moved you to the clinic and sedated your wolf. There’s some concern that Gavin’s death has affected her.” I told her.
“Who is this Gavin you keep mentioning is dead. I don’t know anyone by that name.” She replied.
Miss Evens and I looked at each other. My concern growing about her mental state.
“How about we try this a different way.” Miss Evens said. “Why don’t you tell us about yourself, and we will see if we can piece together what’s going on from there.”
“Ok.” She said calming down a little. “My name is Paula Lawrence. I’m a member of the Black Moon pack.”
Miss Evens and I looked at each other with raised eyebrows.
“My husband David and I have three children, Emma, Brandon and Emery.” She continued.
“Do you remember meeting Gavin?” I asked her.
“I don’t have any idea who that is.” She responded.
“What about your wolf, do you know why she is so upset?” Miss Evens asked her.
“That’s not my wolf, I mean it is, but it isn’t. I don’t know how to explain it.” Paula told us.
“You get some rest; I’ll call the Alpha of Black Moon and see what information he can give us. We will sort this out Paula.” I told her.
After leaving the room we meet up with Elijah again. “Paula seems calm but confused. Let’s try to keep her wolf out for now. I’m going to make a phone call. I will let you know what I find out.” I headed back to the house while Miss Evens stayed and filled him in.
The Black Moon pack is halfway across the country I had very little dealings with them. Alpha Cooper was known for being a kind and fair ruler. Darien had stayed a few months with them and helped train his warriors.
Back in my office I found his number in the Rolodex easily. Dialing the number, I wasn’t sure what I was going to say if he answered. To my surprise the phone was answered on the second ring. A cheerful young lady's voice “Thank you for calling Black Moon Industries, how can I help you?”
“I need to speak with Alpha Cooper.” I said.
After a small pause. “May I ask who’s calling?” She asked.
“Alpha Aiden.” I told her.
“One moment please Alpha. I will transfer you right away.” A loud click followed by music before the phone rang again.
Alpha Cooper answered shortly. “Alpha Aiden, what can I do for you? I heard about the loss of Beta Darien; he was a great man and a loss to us all.”
“I have an interesting situation here. One of our Omega’s has passed and when I went to speak with his mate, I found her in a peculiar state. She’s currently sedated at out clinic.” I said.
“I’m not sure how I can help.” Alpha Cooper said.
“Her name is Paula Lawrence, she pledged to our pack almost fifty years ago but doesn’t seem to remember. She swears she’s part of your pack and that her husband and children are there.”
Alpha Cooper cut me off there. “You have Paula?”
“Yes, as I said she moved her with her husband Gavin around fifty years ago, but she doesn’t remember. I was hoping you could fill in some blanks for me.” I said.
“Paula went missing sixty years ago, we searched everywhere for her. Her husband David swore she wouldn’t just leave. You’re saying she’s been there with you this whole time.”
“Yes, her and Omega Gavin have lived here quite contently until Gavin’s death yesterday. Something seems to have snapped, she has no memory of her life here or him and her and her wolf are at ends.” I told him.
“I have contacted her mate and children they can’t wait to have her home.” Alpha Cooper said.
“Hold on a minute. She may have no memory of it but she has been a member of our pack for longer than I have been Alpha. She is my responsibility. I have no intention of keeping her from her family but until I know she is safe she will remain here. Her and her wolf were battling it out when I found her.”
“Paula and Iris were always so close?” He said questioningly.
“I know we have had to keep Iris sedated, she keeps trying to force control and even threatening Paula.” I told him. “For now, I do not want her to leave. If that’s what she decides later, I will not stop her. David and their kids are welcome to come here and see her. I’m sure it would make her feel better. We will gladly make accommodations for them should they choose to come here. Before they consider making the long journey you must know, Omega Gavin was murdered. We don’t know who did it yet but we believe his death was meant to scare a couple of our girls. They have been moved to the pack house so the Luna and I can keep a close eye on them.
Alpha Cooper fell silent for a moment, no doubt speaking to the family, before answering. “They would still like to come. I will send some warriors with them if you will make accommodations for 15 people to come.”
“15?” I asked. She had only spoke of four, did Alpha Cooper really believe ten warriors were necessary.
“Paula has six grandchildren now who are very eager to meet her. I couldn’t talk any of them out of it if I tried.” He let out a hearty laugh. “Beta Sebastian will be missed but he insists on meeting his grandmother.”
“Your Beta is her grandson; she will be so proud. I will set out making a couple homes available for them and let her know they are coming.” I told him.
