Chapter Eighty-Six
Chapter Eighty-Six
Bella worked, but her mood was restless and anxious. She kept glancing at her phone, waiting in worry and unease, but also full of anticipation and hope. Lauriel, sitting next to her, chuckled softly.
"Are you waiting for your boyfriend to call? You really know how to choose a boyfriend. He's not only handsome and tall, but he also seems very wealthy... like someone with high social status. Bella, tell me, which prestigious family does your boyfriend belong to? He doesn't seem like an ordinary salaried worker like us."
Lauriel spoke with admiration in her eyes, not just for Bella's exceptionally attractive boyfriend but also because she had heard that the man had paid all of Bella's hospital bills, wanted to transfer her to a private room, and ensured she received special care.
This level of attention wasn't something an ordinary man could afford, everyone knows that hospital fees are not cheap, and hospital services are extremely expensive.
Bella knew Lauriel had misunderstood, but she was too preoccupied with her current worries to explain.
"You're overthinking it. I don't really know what he does, but he's just like us," Bella replied with a smile. As soon as her phone screen lit up, Bella immediately stood up, surprising Lauriel and some colleagues around them.
"Ah... I have an important call... you all keep working," Bella said awkwardly before quickly taking her phone outside.
In a secluded corner by the stairs, where few people passed by, Bella anxiously answered the phone. On the other end was the doctor who had treated her when she was hospitalized for severe abdominal pain. Before her discharge, this doctor had shown great care for her, and she noticed he treated Levi with the utmost respect, seemingly he misunderstood her and Levi's relationship just like Lauriel did.
So when Bella noticed something unusual about the milk her husband prepared for her every night, she asked this doctor to test the remaining milk.
[Miss Bella, the test results are in... indeed, the milk contains components similar to those found in emergency contraceptive pills. If mixed into a drink, this drug is undetectable as it has no smell or taste, and the drinker will not show immediate health issues... So, the reason you were hospitalized a few days ago is because of this...?]
Bella shuddered at the doctor's words but didn't want him to know her emotions. She softly said, "Perhaps... it's just as you're thinking, doctor. Can you tell me more about this drug?"
[Although I've been a doctor for many years... I'm not familiar with this drug. It shares some components with regular emergency contraceptives, but that's just a small part. This drug is much more dangerous and terrifying. It not only prevents pregnancy but also destroys the uterus of the person who consumes it. If taken regularly for a week, you will lose the ability to become pregnant and the uterus will be completely destroyed by the third week... and leading to fatality.] The doctor tried to speak in the easiest way possible, because he himself was so scared that he was sweating during the process of testing the ingredients in the milk that Bella brought.
Bella remained silent for a moment, not daring to breathe heavily. Her hands and feet were trembling, unable to stand firmly, as she began to understand Max's sinister plans. "That drug..."
[Yes, it's very likely a banned and particularly dangerous drug. It's undoubtedly expensive. I don't know how you came across this drug, but it seems you didn't know you were consuming it, hence your hospitalization a few days ago... Should we inform Mr. Karter about this?]
Bella struggled to suppress her trembling and panic, saying, "No need, I'll tell him myself... Please keep this confidential and don't disclose it to anyone. Name your price, I'll pay whatever it takes."
The doctor quickly replied, [I can't dare accept your money... Mr. Karter has ordered me to assist you. I'm just trying to fulfill his command. I think someone wants to harm you, not to take your life just wants you not to be able to get pregnant and give birth. Either way, it's very dangerous and cruel... I advise you to report it to the police.]
"I understand, thank you, doctor." After hanging up, Bella's mind was a tangled mess, not knowing where to begin. But recalling what the doctor had just said, her entire body turned cold, her limbs trembling so much she had to lean against the wall for support.
The recent events began to unfold in Bella's mind like a short, fragmented film: from discovering her husband's affair with her best friend, to the successful auction of land in the suburbs, to what happened during the trip, and most recently, her father, Mr. James, arranging a comprehensive health checkup for both her and Max.
Her father could not have been unaware of her health status, as he was very attentive and concerned about his daughter's well-being. Bella herself might not even understand her own health as well as her father did. He wanted a grandchild very much and was confident that his daughter's health was perfectly normal. Bella never mentioned that despite being married for four years, she hadn't become pregnant because Max had never touched her.
And of course, Max couldn't possibly tell his father-in-law that he hadn't touched his wife during those four years.
Bella slumped down, burying her head between her knees. She couldn't distinguish her emotions at the moment, nor could she tell if she was dreaming.
"Ha... how cruel... you people are really cruel to me," Bella muttered, her lips curling into a bitter smile. She had never thought she would end her marriage with Max peacefully, but now she had even more reason to drag both Max and Pearl down to hell.
What Bella hadn't expected was that she didn't feel sorrow, tears, or despair—emotions that should have surfaced by now. It seemed the doctor's words had shocked and surprised her to the point where she didn't know how to feel about the situation.
Sitting in a secluded corner, Bella lost track of how long she had been there. She only realized she lacked the strength to stand when her phone rang. Seeing it was Lauriel, Bella snapped back to reality. Lauriel must have noticed Bella had been gone too long and should called. Bella didn't answer but texted back that she was returning to the office. Throughout the workday, Bella couldn't stop thinking about what the doctor had said. Report to the police? That would be too easy; she didn't like easy solutions. A rather intriguing plan had already formed in her mind before everything would come to an end.
After work, Bella received a message from Max saying he was busy with work and would stay overnight at the office. He didn't forget to remind Bella to drink the milk he had bought for her. Bella smiled softly and replied sweetly before turning off her phone.
But Bella did not go home but went somewhere else. She stood in front of the big villa gate for a while, and soon the big door opened.
Levi was waiting inside. When he saw Bella taking the initiative to come, he smiled extremely satisfied but did not forget to say a few jokes.
“I was quite surprised when you took the initiative to come to my house. Do you miss me?” Levi said smiling.
Bella soon got used to Levi's teasing words, so she didn't feel embarrassed and responded to him. "What can I say? I guess I missed you so much that I came here. If you don't like it, I'll go back—"
"Come in, don't go." Levi immediately interrupted her, blocking her way out with his arm.
Bella shrugged and smiled innocently, "You said it."
As she stepped into the living room, Bella still couldn't get used to the beauty of this place. Bella, being a wealthy heiress, had grown up in luxury and never lacked anything. It wasn't her first time at Levi's house, but she still couldn't suppress her amazement at the mansion's interior design.
Levi made her a cup of tea, and after taking a sip, Bella spoke, "I came here because I need your help." Usually, Bella wouldn't come to his house directly; whenever she needed Levi's help, a call or a message would suffice.
Levi glanced at her and immediately replied, "I won't help." His quick and decisive response left Bella a bit bewildered and stunned.
"What are you saying? We clearly have an agreement in this relationship..." Bella quickly responded, not understanding why Levi was suddenly acting like this. Even with Levi's capricious nature, this was unexpected.
Levi sat cross-legged, looking relaxed and quietly sipping his tea. It wasn't the first time he had made tea, but this was indeed just Bella, the only person he made tea for.
"So what exactly is our relationship?" Levi asked softly, but his gaze at Bella was icy as if wanting to devour her immediately.
