Chapter Eighty-Five
Chapter Eighty-Five
"Miss Bella... please stay in the hospital for another day or two until your health is fully recovered. You are leaving right after waking up will-" The doctor said worriedly.
Bella waved her hand, cutting him off, "I know, but I feel much better already. I have things to do and can’t stay here any longer."
Hearing this, the doctor continued to advise Bella to stay for further examinations. Bella raised an eyebrow and said, "You don’t need to worry. I’ll rest well at home, so there’s no need to stay in the hospital."
"But if you leave now, what am I supposed to tell Mr. Karter?" the doctor murmured. However, he couldn’t stop Bella if she wanted to be discharged.
Since there were only the two of them in the room, Bella heard him clearly. She shrugged and said, "I’ll tell Levi later."
Though she didn’t show any special emotion outwardly, Bella felt extremely uneasy inside. When Levi left the room, she had the quiet space to think more carefully about the unusual things Max had been doing recently.
Bella didn’t stay in the hospital much longer. After the doctor's reminders and receiving her prescription, she went straight home. Except for Lauriel, no one knew about Bella's sudden stomachache that caused her to faint. Other colleagues simply thought she was exhausted from overworking.
Bella knew Lauriel was kind and generous but also liked to gossip, so she had warned Lauriel not to tell anyone about her hospital visit due to the stomachache.
After all, a minor employee being hospitalized for a stomachache wasn’t important enough for higher-ups like Max to notice. Thus, Max had no idea his wife had been hospitalized.
Bella returned home, pretending as if nothing had happened. If it weren’t for the makeup, her pale and sickly face would have been evident.
As usual, Max, with a cheerful smile, brought a cup of hot milk to her bedroom door, patiently waiting for her to come out.
"I made you some milk, drink it before it gets cold," he said lovingly, as he always did.
Bella glanced at the hot milk and then at Max. Hiding her discomfort, she smiled, "Thank you, dear. I can make my own milk; you don’t have to do this."
Max shook his head and handed the glass of milk to his wife. "I want to do this. Taking care of my wife's health and sleep makes me very happy."
If it weren't for the two people facing each other, Bella would definitely vomit in disgust at this man's words. She didn't want to continue getting involved with him, so she quickly accepted the glass of milk and closed the door.
Bella didn’t immediately return to her bed or desk. She stood near the door, silently listening to Max’s footsteps until she heard the door close and no longer heard his steps. Only then did she dare to relax her guard.
She sighed and murmured, "Since when… did things turn out this way? Why have Max and I become like strangers, wary of each other?"
Bella knew she wasn't an observant person, but she wasn't stupid enough to not know the current situation between her and her husband. The situation now is completely different from the previous time. Instead of both secretly having an affair behind each other's back and being distant, this time Max proactively approached her, cared for her, and did the things that he had done before he had never done it.
"Is he tired of Pearl? Impossible. They’ve been secretly together for so long, and Pearl isn’t the type to give up without achieving her goal." Though Bella vaguely sensed the danger and unease from what her husband was doing, she had no clear idea what it was.
A sly smile appeared on Bella's face as she thought of something. She softly said, "Pearl... you are so pitiful. I really pity you."
Bella stared at the cup of milk on the table. It was still warm, and drinking it now would be delicious. She picked up the cup and went straight to the bathroom, pouring it all into the sink, leaving just a bit at the bottom...
Early in the morning, Max stood outside Bella’s room knocking on the door, which annoyed her greatly. However, if she didn't get up to open the door, he would continue knocking until she did.
"Haven't I told you already? If you need to get to the company early, just go. Stop knocking on my door," Bella said irritably, though her tone remained gentle.
Max simply smiled at his newly awoken wife, glancing around her room as if searching for something, and his smile grew brighter.
"Did you sleep well last night? We're due for a comprehensive health check soon, and I'm very concerned about your health. It's not just me; your father is worried, too. Let me take that cup and wash it," Max said.
Bella sighed, "No need. I was too sleepy last night and forgot to wash it after drinking. Just go to the office first." She yawned and then closed the door, returning to her room.
Max, seemingly satisfied with her response and demeanor, said a few more words before leaving the house. Bella stood by the window, watching her husband's car drive away, her lips curling into a contemptuous smile.
"I can't even find the words to describe how vile and terrifying a bastard is like you." Bella muttered, her smile cold and murderous.
The previous night marked the fourth day that Max had personally prepared and brought milk to Bella and had knocked on her door early in the morning to wake her up.
To outsiders, Max might seem like the ideal husband, caring and deeply loving towards his wife.
For more than a week, every night before Bella went to bed or while she was working, Max would bring a cup of hot milk to her door, and every early morning, he would wake her up, always peering into the room as if looking for something.. If the milk cup is empty, Max will happily leave the house to go to the company first, but if there is still milk left in the cup, Max will seriously remind his wife that she must drink all the milk in the cup and not leave any milk.
While Max was handling work in his office, Pearl sauntered in gracefully without needing Max's permission. Once the door closed, leaving only the two of them, Pearl approached Max from behind and hugged him.
"Max, aren't you happy to see me?" Pearl asked sweetly.
"Even if I were, I can't show it openly. This is the company," Max replied, stroking Pearl's fair arm, his tone indulgent.
Hearing that, Pearl smiled even happier. She thought of something and asked, "It seems like tomorrow you and Bella have a general health check-up appointment, right? Although your father-in-law said he wanted the best for you, we all know he just wanted to know if Bella couldn't get pregnant because of you or just her. Looks like he didn't hide his purpose at all."
Max sighed. Without Pearl mentioning it, he realized it because his father-in-law really didn't hide it at all. But at the same time, his father-in-law does not care about his self-esteem as a man.
It seems...
"It seems he’s very confident that his daughter is perfectly healthy, which is why he’s arranged for a health check-up for both of you, right?" Pearl smirked, hitting on what Max was thinking.
If Bella really had health issues and couldn't conceive, Mr. James would never have suggested a health check-up for both his daughter and son-in-law. He wouldn't risk his daughter’s reputation or let others know she was infertile. No father wants to let outsiders know that his daughter is infertile.
Max was silent, because what Pearl said was so right, but thinking the opposite way, his father-in-law was trying to crush his son-in-law's self-esteem. Max clenched his hands. It wasn't that he didn't realize these things, but as soon as his father-in-law said it, he realized it, but he just tried to ignore it.
From the beginning, in his father-in-law’s eyes, Max was an outsider unworthy of marrying his daughter. If it weren't for Bella’s insistence on marrying Max four years ago, even threatening to sever ties with her father, Mr. James would never have accepted Max as his son-in-law.
Though he had the status and career many men envied, everything he had was bestowed by his father-in-law as a reward for marrying Bella.
"Are you giving her the milk every night? It only works if she drinks it daily," Pearl asked.
Max immediately nodded, "Of course, every morning I check and make sure she has finished drinking."
"Good. Then all we need to do is wait for the results of tomorrow’s health check-up," Pearl said, her eyes gleaming with malice and cruelty.
