The spell and the victim
Lindsay's POV
I was so devastated that I found it hard to say anything for the first few seconds. I opened my mouth to speak, but a gasp escaped instead.
“Asher, is there a problem?" I tried to ask, but the call had already ended. My overthinking self played in. I started thinking of the numerous reasons he would call me.
I rushed back to the room where Shaun was. He stared at me in puzzlement. I was so thrown off as I searched for my clothes like a crazy person.
“Lindsay, is there something wrong?" he asked, but I didn't give him a response. He slipped off the bed and walked to where I was. “Hey" he called out and I looked at him briefly before peeling my eyes off him again. “Hey!" He called out and I stopped immediately, but I was still panicking.
“Is there anything wrong?" he held my face with both his hand as he peered his eyes into mine
“I..."I sucked in the air. “I need to be home"
“But you haven't spent..."
“There's... an" I racked my brain thinking of the right words. “There's a fire in my apartment. The fire department just called me" I blurted out.
“Oh," he was alerted immediately. “Should I drive you?“
“No!" I snapped as I wore my skirt
“I don't see why not. You will get home much faster"
“No no no it's fine. I just need to get dressed and I'll be home before I even know it"
“Are you sure?" He asked with skepticism.
“Yeah" I forced a smile. My lips were trembling too much for me to hold up a good smile.
I wore my clothes and ran off without acknowledging Shaun who stood at the door. I felt bad, but I was panicking too much to pay attention to his emotions.
I had thought cheating on my husband was going to be very easy, but apparently, it wasn't. When I got outside, I flagged down a cab and got in. Words couldn't explain how nervous I was.
*****
My heart was beating so fast that I could hear it. When I got to the front door, I didn't know if I should knock or I should walk in.
For fuck sake Lindsay it's your house, just walk in.
I twisted the doorknob and walked in. I thought Asher was going to be seated on the couch, waiting angrily for me, but that wasn't the case.
Instead of meeting Asher, I met my whole family. By my whole family, I meant just my mum and my dad. Yes, I was an only child. And that was their excuse for letting me stay in an abusive Marriage.
I wouldn't say I hated them, but I hated what they did to me. I mean, I was their only daughter and they were supposed to care about my well-being, but they didn't.
“Oh, Lindsay honey" My mum walked towards me with a smile on her face.
Let me give you a brief introduction.
My mother is a retired lawyer and my dad is a reverend father. Yes, he was. Very religious to the core. He cared about the well-being of his church members but didn't care about me.
“When did you guys come back?" I struggled to keep the fake smile on my face as I addressed them.
“Yesterday"
They had gone on a trip to Hawaii to spend some time together. They loved each other so much. So much that I admired them. They were indeed happy together. I, on the other hand, was stuck with Asher. A man who I knew hated me, but didn't want to admit it to himself.
He was right behind them with an annoying smile on his face. I wanted to desperately smack that fake smile on his cheeks, but I knew my wrist would be broken the moment my parents left.
“And we decided to stop by and spend some time with you" my mum, Britney said. "As we promised”
"As you promised?“ I asked in puzzlement. I had no idea they were coming.
"Yeah, we told Asher” she turned to look at Asher. "Didn't you tell her?“
"Oh yes I did”
I scowled at him. How dare he lie to my parents. He was always fond of making me look clueless and all.
"Well I guess it slipped my mind” I defended myself
The door opened and someone screamed. "Grandma! “ Leia ran inside and hugged Britney.
"Oh, my dear. You have grown so much"
"Mum, you saw her last month” I rolled my eyes playfully.
"You know these kids and how fast they grow”
"Grandpa” ran to meet my Dad, Jacob who gave her a warm hug.
"You have grown so big. What have you been eating?” he said as he ruffled her hair.
While they talked, Asher excused himself and went to the kitchen. I followed him
“Why didn't you tell me they were coming?"
“It slipped my mind, '' he replied plainly as he drank water from a glass cup.
I wanted to fling that cup away and make him listen to what I had to say.
“Why do you always have to make me look clueless and why the fuck did you call me?"
“I shouldn't have called you?"
“You sounded so urgent"
“This isn't urgent?"
I gritted my teeth. “What if I had something to do at my workplace?"
“ I don't care about that. If I want you home, you have to be home"
“You seem to be forgetting that it's my parents, not yours. Your parents are in God knows where. Probably dead or something ”
It all happened so fast. Before I could comprehend anything, he grabbed me by my neck and pinned me to the wall. I wanted to scream but I couldn't. His grip was so tight and his eyes were fierce. He didn't care if I was dying or not.
"Don't you dare talk about my parents with that filthy mouth of yours? You demonic witch” he spat out in a whisper.
"Dad” I heard Leia's voice and my heart dropped.
She had seen us. Asher quickly removed his hand around my neck and turned to look at her. It was obvious she was scared before I could see the way she shuddered.
I didn't want her to continue seeing us like that, but Asher was an animal who didn't care about courtesy.
“My darling" he carried her up. “ Let's go join the others," he said with a smile as he walked away.
I was left in the kitchen with the option of either crying my eyes or going back to the sitting room as if nothing happened.
I shouldn't have mentioned his family. I knew how much he hated them.
I knew he hated them so much, but I didn't know why. He hardly spoke of them. Even while we were dating, he used to get very angry when I tried to bring them up. I stopped being curious when he slapped me for being persistent. Yes, Asher was abusive while we were dating, but I still married him. I was blinded by love. He was a spell and I was the victim
