Lyra* Lyra Has Awoken
LYRA*
I'm not sure how long I have been in this dream world of mine. I think I will stay here, though. Who wants to go back to a broken brain and a broken body. Not me, that is for sure.
I am content right here in my mystical fairyland filled with creatures you only read about in books and watched in movies. The only time I was out of this dream was when Vega was here. Once she left, I went right back into my dream state, a place where unicorns, dragons, centaurs, fairies, mermaids, and even creatures like werewolves and other shifter beings resided.
My mind has taken me to another planet, I suppose. Where different raises of humanoid creatures reside. Maybe all of those stories my mom has told Vega, and I about Lyra have molded their way into my subconscious. My mom should write a book about this supposed planet we all lived on in a past life. She would make millions.
At night the universe bursts with vibrant bright colors. This world had two moons. It is hard to explain. It's all a dream, I think. I get so confused because it all seems so real. I just showed up one night after one of my angels came and whisked me away. The brain does crazy things when damaged, and you can not distinguish fantasy from reality. I am not dead; however, I am stuck in a dream world.
It is like that movie, the lion, the witch, and the wardrobe. You know, where the kids show up in Narnia, everyone knows who they are. They call me AlexiAnna here. It's always nice to get a chance to be a whole new person.
I was perfectly content to stay in my little dream world. Until Vega said, she would not be seeing me the next day. Vega being here every day was helping me keep one foot in reality. Suddenly, it was like a switch went off in my brain. My mystical land disappeared until there was only darkness. I stayed there in the darkness waiting for Vega to return. I don't know how long I had been in that dark, dreamless state? Until I heard Vega's voice through the darkness. The whole time she was there, I willed myself to wake up, to twitch a finger, anything, but to no avail. My body was going against me. Then panic started setting in.
'Am I going to a vegetable? Is this going to be my life? Am I ever going to be able to wake up?' I screamed in the confines of my mind.
It's crazy what happened next. I heard a man's voice. Then the feeling started coming back to my body. I couldn't recognize the man's voice, but his voice brought peace to the anxiety I was currently having. I could hear someone other than Vega; I'm not a vegetable because all the feeling came back throughout my body. I could jump for joy, except I can't. I still couldn't move.
'Come on, Lyra, all you have to do is raise a finger. Just one freaking finger, wake up Lyra.' I thought, however, nothing happened.
I could feel someone moving my leg. The one that I knew had been broken in the crash. Why doesn't it hurt? Surprisingly enough, it doesn't hurt as much as I thought it should. It's like a dull ache. It's hard to explain, but that's when my brain went on high alert. There was something in my throat. My heart rate skyrocketed; I was choking, dying all over again; I couldn't breathe. My gag reflex tried to kick in, but with this thing in my throat obstructing my airway, it wasn't happening.
"Nurse, page Doctor Williams quick, Lyra has woken up," the man hollered out.
My eyes burst open, and I immediately started thrashing around. I started trying to pull at all of the wires and objects that were causing me to suffocate.
A man grabbed my wrist holding them firmly. "Lyra, Lyra, look at me. Calm down; you will be ok. We will get the breathing tube out, but you must calm down. Try to relax, and it won't be so painful," The man said.
I relaxed, but tears were streaming down my face. I was gagging and choking, and there was nothing I could do about it.
Soon more doctors and nurses flooded into the room. They started working diligently to remove this thing from my throat. Once it was out, I tried to speak, but my throat was so sore, and my mouth was like cotton.
I looked around frantically, hoping Vega was there, but she wasn't. Doctors began to ask question after question. I shook my head from side to side, hoping that they would shut up. Everything they were said went through one ear and out the other. I put my fingers to my mouth, hoping they would understand I needed water.
The man who was here with me when I woke up got up from my bedside. "Lyra, my name is Jared Wise. I'll run and get you some ice chips, ok. Calm down; everything is going to be ok; I promise," He said and walked out of the door.
A moment later, he returned, "Let me speak with Lyra for a moment. Let her get used to being awake, and I'll page you when she has calmed down in a little while. She needs space, and everyone is crowding her," he said as he handed me the ice chips.
Jared walked outside with the others for a moment, they were murmuring, so I couldn't hear what they were saying. I sucked on the ice chips, and the ice chips were cool and soothing to my mouth and throat. A couple of minutes later, Jared walked back into the room. He sat down in a chair that was next to my bed.
"Would you like for me to call your sister Vega?" Jared asked me. I nodded my head yes.
"I'll be right back, ok. It's a good sign you know who I'm talking about. An excellent sign indeed," Jared said as he got up and walked out the door again.
Of course, I remember my sister. Are you nuts? She's my other half. Remember my twin sister, Vega, seriously.
I continued to suck on my ice chips. My throat had started to feel better. My heart felt like it was beating a mile a minute. Hopefully, Jared wouldn't take too long. He was a handsome man. I shouldn't be thinking about it, but my goodness. At least my brain was working correctly now. Jared had short curly black hair, deep kind brown eyes, and a light chocolate skin tone. Jared's tall and slender with perfectly toned arm muscles. My brain's in the gutter. Of all the things I could be thinking. I'm thinking about that handsome African-American man that just walked out the door.
Jared walked back in a few minutes later with a smile on his face, showing off his perfectly straight white teeth.
"Jace and Vega are on their way. Are you starting to feel a little bit better? Would you like for me to adjust your bed," Jared asked.
"Yes, please," I said, but you could barely hear what I was saying. "My throat hurts," I whispered.
"It will get better. I will have the nurse give you some pain medication through your IV," Jared said as he adjusted my bed and pushed the nurses' button.
"Are you a Doctor?" I asked Jared.
"Yes, ma'am. I am a Physical Therapist and a part-time Orthopedic Surgeon here in the hospital. I performed the surgeries on your arm and leg. You and I will be working together twice a day for a couple of weeks to help you regain strength and mobility, back into your arms and legs," Jared said while sitting back in the chair next to my bed.
"When can I go home?" I asked Jared.
"That is something you and your family will need to go over with the rest of your other doctors and me. Your parents have been notified and should be here soon. They are both here working in the hospital. However, you need to stay in the hospital for at least two weeks," Jared said.
"Ok," I said, and about that time, the nurse walked in.
"Did you need something, Jared?" She asked as she walked through the sliding door. She walked over and placed a blood pressure cuff on my arm, and gave Jared a flirtatious smile.
"Yes, I do. Could you page Lyra's other doctors to come back to the room? She can speak now, and I need to get her a light sedative," Jared said and smiled back at her.
"I'll get right on that for you, Jared. How are you feeling, Lyra? I am so glad you are awake," she said as she took the blood pressure cuff off of my arm.
"I feel lost. I don't know what's real or not. I have seen things that just," I trailed off as I contemplated what I should say of not. I don't want these people thinking I was nuts. My voice was also still weak and raspy. So I didn't want to strain my voice.
"Oh dear, you've been out for a while. I've heard so many stories coming from people waking up in the ICU. Nothing you say could make me think you were crazy," she said.
"I'll run and page your doctors, and your parents should be arriving shortly. Now that you are awake, they may put you in a private room. I'm not sure," she said as she turned and walked out of the sliding glass door.
"Are you both like a thing or something?" I whispered.
Jared chuckled and turned red. "With Heather, the nurse that was just here? No. She has been pursuing me for quite some time, though. I don't think that I'm her type, though. I'm twenty-eight and still a virgin," Jared said.
"There's nothing wrong with that. I think that's a good thing. I'm twenty-one, and I'm still a virgin. I'll probably grow old and still be a virgin," I whispered, and shrugging my shoulders. Jared smiled.
At that time, Vega ran into the room. "Lyra! Oh My God! Your awake!" Vega screamed as she ran up to me and hugged me.
Vega looked over at Jared. "Thank you so much for calling me," Vega said as she hugged me again. "I'm so glad your awake Lyra, I've been so lost without you," Vega said excitedly. I quirked my eyebrows.
Exactly how long had I been asleep in my fantasy land. Have I been asleep for years? Exactly how old am I now. Tears began to stream down my face. I began to hyperventilate, and the world around me went black.
