Secretly and hopefully inconspicuously, I squinted left and right. Right next to Tyler and I sat Bea and next to her companion. Right next to it, at the head of the table, came the Alpha and his mate. The two seats right next to it remained empty and had not been covered either. Only next to them sat the two men who, like Tyler, had a girl, probably her mate, on their laps.
"Take your hand away from there!" the brunette girl snapped at her companion, breaking the silence. Suddenly all eyes from our table were on her. But the girl seemed really upset tried to free herself from the man's grip. That seemed a bit pointless to me, especially since she was fighting a werewolf, who, as everyone knows, were much stronger than us humans. Surprisingly, the alpha at the head of the board only twisted the eyes and spoke softly to his companion.
A few minutes later we were actually served the food. A quick look at the other end of the room told me that there was a huge buffet set up for the rest of the people and that some were already queuing to finally be able to eat. Looking back at our own table, I noticed that the Alphas and Betas and their companions' plates looked relatively normal, but the rest of us looked a bit crowded as there was double the portion. As if at a secret signal, all the werewolves began to eat. Confused as I seemed to have missed something, I looked up at Tyler. However, this only grinned down at me briefly and winked. Shortly thereafter, Tyler held a fork, with food, in front of my nose. "Try it here. It really doesn't taste bad."
So we both ate relatively relaxed. The other two werewolves had it a bit more difficult. The one with the drugged girl was having trouble holding her up while eating. He didn't have to offer her anything either, she was still completely knocked out. The other two didn't fare much better either. Although the girl was awake there, she refused to be fed by her companion and therefore did not eat anything. Her companion tried again and again, but he didn't exactly become friendlier because he was getting more and more annoyed by her behavior.
"Tell me," the werewolf addressed Tyler with the unconscious girl, "How is it that your mate is so calm? If I hadn't drugged mine, she would have turned off even more than those over there" "HEY! What are you imagining about...", the brunette wanted to grumble, but her companion quickly covered her mouth. "Shut up! You're still talking head and neck to us!" mocked this one. The others at the table skillfully ignored us. "My partner and I actually got along well from the start." Tyler turned back to the person who had spoken to him. "In addition, my partner couldn't defend herself like yours anyway." "How can you understand that now?" asked the one who was still covering his companion's mouth. My companion has been shown to have been falsely attacked by a werewolf as a child and lost her voice as a result. Defending verbally is therefore bad." I felt the eyes of the two werewolves on me. Neither of them said a word. We ate in silence.
After that it took another two hours in which we just continued to sit here. After an hour, the drugged girl slowly woke up and probably everyone in the room could understand that he drugged her. As soon as she woke up, she was thrashing about and screaming like crazy. When she didn't calm down, the werewolf drugged her again.
Finally dinner was over. After the alpha had left the room with his companion, we were finally able to leave. What confused me was that the rule only applied to us guests and not to the rest of the pack. They came and went as they pleased.
A completely different werewolf than before escorted us back to our quarters. He didn't speak to us on the way either. When we arrived he spoke to Tyler again: "The alpha is expecting you in his office tomorrow. You will be picked up. Your mate will be supervised in the pack house during this time." Then he turned and left.
I looked at Tyler with a skeptical look. So I should be supervised like a small child? But Tylers just didn't seem to care. It seemed all he had on his mind was his upcoming meeting with the Alpha .
I couldn't imagine what that meant for him now, but I imagined being summoned to the principal of the school.
We went to our quarters, but Tyler seemed genuinely troubled by this conversation. He didn't really speak for the rest of the evening. Well, until it came to the topic of the sleeping situation. There was only one bed and no other furniture that could serve as such. Maybe it was silly that I wasn't quite comfortable with it. After all, I had slept leaning against him on the way here. But somehow it seemed different to sleep together in one bed.
"Hey kid, are you okay?" Tyler grabbed my hand and rubbed his thumb across the back of my hand. "If I can't, I'll sleep on the floor," he told me. A look around the room told me that there was only a wooden floor here and it would certainly not be very comfortable to sleep there. I shook my head. Tyler was kind to me the whole time, I couldn't let him sleep on the floor. He smiled, "I'll just give you some clothes to sleep in." Tyler turned to his bag, which he had put here, and rummaged in it for things for me. He handed them to me and I went to the bathroom to change there quickly .
Items turned out to be loose slacks and a large t-shirt, probably Tyler's himself. Back in the bedroom, I could see that Tyler was wearing roughly the same thing, only the difference was that his shirt fit him far better than mine.
A loud knock echoed through the house. "Go get some sleep. I'll see what's going on," Tyler said, clearly confused by the late visit, and left the room. I decided to do what he recommended and go to bed.
Only now did I really realize that the day had been quite exhausting. Maybe not exactly physically, even if the walk to the main house wasn't to be despised, but rather mentally. Constantly making sure you obeyed the weird rules of the werewolves wasn't exactly easy. After all, I was used to a different life. Only humans lived in the cities, cut off from the werewolves. We weren't as free as people may have been in the past, but it was very different from how my life was now. Without direct contact with werewolves, it was just freer. At least that's how it always seemed to my sister and me.
Lost in my thoughts of my former life, I hardly noticed how my eyes closed and I could only hear the front door slam in the background.
