"We have to do something. Before Matt makes the first move."
"Don't worry, Jake. I won't let him hurt anyone here. Even if it means accepting my fate."
"You never wanted that. You never wanted your other side to come out."
"If it's the only thing I can do to protect you all, then I will do it without hesitation!" I said seriously.
"We're not going to take that, Hunter. We're not going to put that burden on you. Hell, maybe they're the war pack. But we're family and we'll fight together. Everyone sees it that way. I wouldn't hesitate to give up my life. "
I massaged my temple and looked out the window. I had to take care of my pack. I couldn't let her suffer because of a mistake. Maybe I should have reconsidered the Zoe thing. If it meant I could protect my family and them by doing so, then I had to do it.
"If I find out that you're becoming half a vampire. I'll kill you myself, Hunter."
I smiled slightly and looked at my best friend.
"I don't expect anything else from you."
My cell phone rang and I realized it was my Omega Louis. My alarm bells went off, and without letting my phone ring a second time, I picked it up.
"Did something happen?" I asked slightly panicked.
You have to know that Louis was sort of my sister Ella's bodyguard. He took care of her and today I asked him to take care of Luna too. He hadn't called me in years because nothing had ever happened. The fact that he called today didn't bode well.
"Nothing bad, actually. Your sister Ella is fine."
"What about Luna? Is she in danger?" I asked loudly.
My heart was pounding wildly in my chest, about to jump out with worry.
"No. You just told me to tell you everything. She's talking to a werewolf. I know him. He's from Matt's pack. His omega."
"What does he want from her?" I asked angrily, grabbing my car keys.
I quickly ran to my car and started the engine. I didn't even buckle up and drove straight away.
"I don't know. They're talking normally."
"Where is Ella? She must know he's from Matt's pack."
"Luna went first. She had a phone call that didn't go well judging by her face. She seemed upset so she ran into Cole."
"Where exactly is she?"
"In front of the city library."
"I'll be there as soon as possible. Take care of them."
"Of course Alpha."
(...)
I parked the car in a restricted area, but I didn't have time to find a parking space in the city.
I would like to transform myself so that I could get there faster. However, thanks to my vampiric side, I was the fastest werewolf.
When I caught Luna's scent and finally spotted her, I saw red. The bastard actually had his hand on her shoulder. Angrily I stormed towards the two and slapped his hand away.
"Don't touch her!" I said without thinking.
The omega looked at me briefly before realizing who I was.
"Hunter. Nice to meet you in person."
I didn't answer him, just looked back.
"Are you okay?" I asked my mate.
"Ehm. Yes. Cole didn't do anything wrong!", she said confused.
I stifled a growl.
"I don't believe it!" I heard this Cole say gleefully.
"She's your mate!"
I glared at him angrily. Of course you could tell Luna meant something to me. My whole body was tense and I was about to transform.
"You have a human girl for a mate."
I grabbed his collar angrily and said softly so Luna wouldn't hear, "Listen, Omega. Keep your hands off my girl."
"Hunter, let him go!" my little mate begged, grabbing my upper arm.
I let go of Cole and pushed him back. He didn't seem impressed, just gave a fake smile.
"I'm surprised you don't want to keep it a secret. I'm even more surprised you haven't tagged her yet. Is it because you want Zoe? Because she would be the perfect Luna?"
His gaze darkened. Something was wrong.
"Hey, what's going on here?" my sister asked.
"Take Luna and wait for me by the car!" I said sternly.
Ella seemed to understand and quickly left with Luna without asking. When Cole and I were alone, I asked, "What's your problem? Something tells me it has to do with Zoe."
"Don't put her name in your mouth!" he said, growling.
This time it was me who smiled, "She's your mate."
"Why did you even talk to him?" Ella asked me reproachfully.
"I didn't know I was forbidden!" I replied cheekily.
"Listen. I don't understand any of this. Hunter's acting possessive. You're all acting weird and if I talk to someone nice, do I get snapped at?"
"Luna, it's complicated."
"No, it's not that. You're acting strange. It's better if I go now."
"Please stay. Hunter will explain."
"Ella, I need time. Leave me alone for now!" I said, leaving her begging.
I was treated like a doll. I didn't like that and I really didn't feel like the whole fuss anymore.
Barely five minutes had passed when Hunter suddenly stood next to me and looked at me like a lost puppy.
"Hey!" he said shyly.
"Hi...why are you here?"
"I would like to talk to you."
"About what? The truth?"
His eyes flashed and he looked away now.
"I wish I could."
I rolled my eyes and wanted to get away from him. However, he grabbed my arm and pulled me towards him. I was shocked when we stood so close together that no sheet of paper fit between us.
"Do not go."
"Let go of me!" I breathed softly.
I didn't want him to really let me go. But at least Hunter was a complete stranger to me. I knew absolutely nothing about him.
Why did his closeness still feel so good? It was a familiar feeling when he held me or when he looked at me so intensely.
"I can't. The more I try to stay away from you, the more I'm drawn to you."
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath before pushing Hunter away from me.
"What's all this about? Why was I called twice today as a human girl? Why did Cole claim I'm your mate? What does all of this mean?" I bombarded him with questions.
I was frustrated. Pretty frustrated. Hunter seemed to notice this because he took a step toward me.
"Not!"
He stopped squarely and said, "I know this must be overwhelming for you. I'm sorry I got you involved in it all. I wish you'd never met me."
"Then why don't you just leave me alone?" I asked hurt.
"Because I can not."
"But I want it. Stay away from me, Hunter."
"I wish it could be that easy. I need your closeness, little one."
"You want to be near me? Then speak plain language or I will never speak to you again."
"I wish I didn't have to do that. You're the only person I never wanted to do that to."
"What to do?" I asked anxiously.
He took another step towards me and suddenly his green eyes went black.
As if in a trance, I looked at her without blinking.
"If you do that, Hunter, you've screwed it up! Forever!" I subconsciously heard Ella's voice.
I blinked several times and came to.
What was that?
Hunter's eyes were green again, but I just couldn't have imagined the color change. That would be impossible.
"Ella, don't interfere!" Hunter moaned in frustration.
"If you do that, you'll lose her forever. You know that."
"Drive her home!", Hunter just said and disappeared again.
"What was that before?" I asked my friend.
"He's a nut. Just ignore him. Come on, we're going home."
I was still confused but decided to keep my thoughts to myself for now. Maybe people would just think I'm crazy.
The ride was not smooth. Ella nagged that I didn't want to buy a dress. Also for what? I wouldn't go to a ball like that. So it was a complete waste of money.
(...)
"Come on, the others are waiting for us in the dining room."
"Ella, I'm tired. I just want to lie down and sleep now."
Also, I wasn't exactly ready to face so many strangers I'd never met in my life.
"You can't go to bed without something to eat."
"I'm not hungry. Good night, Ella."
"Good night!" Ella gave up and gave me a wistful look.
