"The twins are guaranteed to get angry." Lily remarked amused: "They're guaranteed to be upset that you're talking to me anyway."
"What do I care?" "
It's your companions," she replied and shrugged.
"That's what they say." "
Yeah, and a werewolf certainly has no reason to lie. The mate bond is something unique. And believe me, it's not easy for Jared and Luke either. Werewolf twins like them are incredible rare. I don't think there is a phenomenon which is rarer and mostly they are quite tragedies. Actually it always ended with the death of those involved.
The problem with this is pretty obvious. There are two of you, two different people and yet optically only one. At least I don't know anyone who can tell the two apart. Even their own parents confuse them. Their whole life story is characterized by the fact that they are never seen as individuals, since the two of them almost always come in pairs. The two are very different, which you probably already noticed. Luke is calmer and prefers to think about things. Jared is much more impulsive but also has an incredibly loving side."
I just raised my eyebrows.
You could think she would really like them both.
,,Do not look at me like that. I'm just trying to show you the whole problem. Unfortunately, in the history of werewolves, twins have never been lucky with their partners. Most of the companions killed themselves and thus also plunged the corresponding werewolves into misfortune." "
Isn't that a bit exaggerated?"
"No, even though I thought so at first. How can you love someone just like that without knowing the person. But werewolves can.
And the loss of their companion robs them of almost any will to live. Most end themselves soon after. They believe their love in the afterlife, for the werewolves this is by the stars to be met. Only a few manage to stay alive. Many then just vegetate to themselves. Because there is no second companion for a werewolf." "
But how does this obsession decide? I think it decides quite arbitrarily."
"It sort of is," she said, "but actually, not long ago, a test was developed to tell if a person might be a werewolf's mate or mate. In fact, the system is already like that good that it can match the appropriate pairs."
"And how is that supposed to work?" I asked her skeptically.
"I don't really know exactly. You'd probably have to ask Luke about that. He knows it by far better. But as far as I know it works with one Blood sample. This is examined and analyzed and then assigned accordingly. A system has even been developed that can make these assignments all by itself and you no longer have to manually compare hundreds or even thousands of samples from humans and werewolves for a match."
"But what if an error occurs with this assignment?" "
Well, to my knowledge, no such thing has happened yet. But even if it did. At the latest when the two people meet, it would definitely be clear to the werewolf."
"Wouldn't it be much easier if werewolves only formed pairs with each other?" I finally wanted to know from her, since we were now near another house. "Yes, probably. Pure
werewolf relationships are also less problematic from the start . However, there's quite a problem. For some reason almost all werewolves born are males. Without humans, the werewolf species wouldn't exist much longer either."
Lily had shown me something else of the area. Among other things, where she and her companion lived for some time. To my surprise, we didn't encounter any other werewolves the entire time.
If I didn't know better, you'd think they'd all just disappeared in one fell swoop.
But this halfway relaxed moment ended abruptly. Like a bubble hitting the floor and bursting, I realized we were back in front of the twins' den.
"In case you're wondering: Yes, the two are there."
Lily kept an eye on me skeptically.
"Even though you might have the feeling of being in your own personal nightmare. It's not as bad as you might be accepting right now," she added.
I just rolled my eyes. Personal nightmare hit it pretty well. Although I had the picture in my head that I was on my way to my own execution. Except that it wasn't a physical execution but a psychological one. Should I really ever think and speak of the twins in the way that everyone here probably expected of me, I would not only have all my ideals, but also those of my family. After all, they had given everything, even their lives, for these ideals.
What a bad daughter I would be if I dishonored her memory like that.
The door of the building in front of us opened.
"Hey," said one of the twins, who was now standing in the doorway.
I took two steps back,
startled. ,,No panic. Nothing happens that you don't want. I thought you might want to come in."
I wanted to shake my head vigorously and call him a prat for that stupid idea, but I was frozen. I was caught up in my panic. "Um...
Luke!" the twin called back into the house. "I don't think our companion is doing well right now..."
Barely a second later, the second twin was standing in front of me.
Before he could touch me, however, I woke up from my rigidity. I stumbled backwards a few steps in a panic.
I tripped, caught my heel on something and fell.
But before I could hit the ground, the werewolf grabbed me and pulled me into his arms.
How I would have liked to scream, but only a pathetic whistling left my mouth.
"Hey, everything's fine. We'll take care of you."
I stared at his chest, wide-eyed.
"Maybe you should let her go Luke?" Lily pointed out.
"We know what's best for you!" the other twin interjected.
"Damn Jared! But it doesn't get any better with the three of you. And you should know better anyway." "
What's going on here again?" came a male voice. From what I could hear it was the werewolf I had seen earlier today.
"We're just a bit at odds," said the abere twin.
There was silence for a short moment until the other spoke again: "Well, then I would say the facts are simple. Your Luna said something and you should do her well. And preferably a little faster, because I would also like to spend time with my companion today."
The twin, who was still holding me until then, slowly released me, if quch only reluctantly. He also seemed ready to catch me again at any time if I stumbled again.
In a completely different situation, completely among people, that might have been cute, but I just found his behavior creepy. His twin didn't make the situation any better either, because he was also keeping an eagle eye on me.
