The Pack's Sake
I do not know which part was the “for my good” that Mark said to me. But after remembering the panic he had in his eyes, I knew that I had to do as he says so I went to the infirmary where I could see my aunt. Since I couldn’t decide if I fully trust him, I guess I’ll have to go and my aunt, perhaps she holds the answer to my dilemma.
I spotted her chatting with the others staying there and when she noticed me, her face instantly lit up.
“Hello, my niece.” She greeted.
I smiled, “Hello Aunt. How are you doing here?” Well, I admit that t has been days since I last visited her, and seeing her looking healthy and vibrant today just lightened up my heart.
At least I know that she’s in good hands now.
“Well, I am friends with them now. Oh, and I am planning on going to the kitchen and cooking the food for the pack.” She announced to me eagerly, “And how about my niece? What are you up to this day that you seem to forget to visit me here?”
I gulped, feeling a bit guilty. “Oh, I apologize, aunt, things happened.”
She nodded, “Things? Or did the Alpha keep you busy?” The way she asked sounded like she instantly knew it. She was referring to it, and I just realized how quickly my aunt catch on to things.
I cleared my throat, “you plan on staying here for good, aunt?”
She narrowed her eyes at me, “Of course, are we going to talk about this again? I told you, I already made up my mind and serve Alpha Ace.”
I nodded. I see that’s how loyal she is, “But if someone offered to let us escape…will you accept?”
My aunt’s eyes widened and she instantly covered my mouth, glancing around us to make sure someone heard me and she gave me a look, “Are you out of your mind, my niece? Don’t even think about that!”
“But-”
“No. I would never. Continue thinking about that and I’ll report that to the alpha directly.”
Her answer was enough for me to know that she was certain about her decision. No one can change her mind now, not even me, her niece.
I decided to drop the topic and went back to my room to contemplate. I let time pass by that as soon as midnight came by, I stood up and went to the back gate, feeling anxious and uneasy about this.
Everyone was asleep, with only a few patrol guards roaming around.
One patrol guard suddenly stopped me, “Hey, who is there!”
I paused, and when he saw that it was me, the alpha’s mate, he suddenly apologized, “Oh, I apologize, it’s just you, Luna. Can I ask what are you doing at this tie of the night and out of your bed?”
I flashed him a smile, “Oh, I needed some fresh air to think. You know, since the whole area smell like werewolf’s pheromones.”
I tried to lighten the conversation and keep it as casual as possible and it seemed to work as he let it slide, mumbling how he apologize for it and wished me to be careful on my way before proceeding to walk away.
The night was dark, and I could hear a few howls from the surroundings. The sound of crickets through the lonely night continued and the cold wind brushed against my skin. I rubbed my arms together, regretting how I should have brought a thick jacket with me.
When I arrived at my destination, I spotted Mark waiting by the tree.
He raised his eyebrows, seeing that I was only alone.
“You did not bring your aunt with you.” He stated, his tone condensing. He then removed the jacket he was wearing and put it on me.
I nodded, “Yes. She didn’t want to go with me.”
He sighed, “You know this is the only chance you’ll have of escape right?”
I nodded, I know that.
“So you’re willing to leave your aunt here with us?”
I shook my head at that, “Oh, I wouldn’t let that.”
“You should have thought of that before walking here alone. You should have convinced her more.”
I rolled my eyes, getting annoyed at how he is pushing it and how he is making it feel that it was my fault that I didn’t get to let my aunt come with me.
He sighed, “Anyway, I just want to ask if you want him as your alpha?”
I blinked at his question, here he goes again with this random burst of questions. “What’s with the questions now?”
“You know, the moment he laid his hands on you, his human mate, you let him crumble in defeat. You know how strong his influence is on our world.” Mark started to say, “Alphas are important to lead in every pack, and Alpha Ace is not just any pack. He’s the Lycan king. He rules over this whole region. He rules even the neighboring alphas. Everyone fears him. Everyone is at his mercy. But you came along. I thought that he would eventually get rid of you and just let you act as his luna but now that I could see him getting so attached to you, I decided to take matters into my hand.”
“What do you mean?” I asked, “Just get straight to the point.”
“You need to leave. And disappear as if you’ve never met him, Kira.”
“Aren’t you working for him?” I asked, “I thought subordinates should help their leaders to find happiness?”
“I like you, Kira, especially to be our luna but with the alpha’s current status, I can’t risk him getting weak. I can’t believe how the famous cold-hearted alpha is in love now, I only confirmed it when Gusev and Alpha Magnus came to visit us.” He paused, “You’re slowly becoming his weakness. Our alpha doesn’t have any weakness for decades now and having you by his side, you'll just be a distraction on his way of ruling.”
I chuckled at that, not believing what he just said. I had always thought about how loyal Mark is to his leader, and I salute him for that. But having to go on his way just to say that to me, is out of line.
What I can’t accept the most is how it hurts me. Thinking about how I’ll leave Alpha Ace when we already shared a bond. Just imagining that pains me now.
This is weird because I had always yearned to escape this place last time but now that I am finally one with Alpha Ace, I couldn’t bear to think of leaving his side.
But I am not his weakness. I have to refuse that.
“Psh, I’m not his weakness. We just stayed for a few weeks and-”
“But he mated with you,” Mark said, looking me straight in the eye. “His feelings for you are really strong. I fear that if the enemies might kidnap you, he’ll go berserk and destroy everything in this world.” He gnawed on his teeth, “Tsk, I shouldn’t have let this happen. I shouldn’t have let him act as your physics teacher. A human never survives in our world.”
“Then try me.” I said, “I had overcome any difficulties in life. And you’re saying I should give up on him? Now when we already bonded, I mean mated with each other?”
I smirked, crossing my arms in front of me when he couldn’t respond to me, “You know that he could hear my thoughts now? One mind links to him and he won’t hesitate to rush here and have you killed for doing this.”
