Ancient
Tunde and Abby
Tunde came earlier than five as scheduled to pick Abby up from school, and for the past thirty minutes, he has been sitting in his car, in front of her school wondering why she was not picking her calls.
'Where is she? Didn't she say she would be done by five pm? Now how do I locate her? The Nouveau is a very big school, I couldn't just walk up to anybody and ask to see Abby...'
'Okay, what's that her department?...' He wondered trying to remember. 'Maybe I should go look for her department, then I can ask of her from there...' He came out of his car and decided to try her number one last time before he went inside to look for her
"Colonel?" He looked up from his phone towards where the voice came from and saw a young beautiful woman smiling at him. He immediately had his guard up and his look became blank.
She didn't look familiar to him and he wondered where she could have known him from since he doesn't socialize with just anybody.
He gave her a once-over and decided she looked responsible, she didn't look like those kinds of women that flirt and fawned whenever they are presented with the opportunity to be close to him. He also noticed she was wearing a wedding and engagement ring on her left middle finger.
"I'm Dupe, Abby's friend. We've not met before, but I recognize you from when you dropped her off this morning." Dupe quickly introduced herself when she saw he was not forthcoming with saying hello, instead he was aloof, looking at her with a cold expression on his face.
She noticed that even though Abby's new boyfriend was drop-dead gorgeous, his demeanor was scary. She can't help but wonder if this man in front of her can tolerate Abby's kind of fiery personality. She was scared for her friend's sake until his personality immediately changes right in front of her after she introduced herself
"Oh hi! I'm sorry, I was just wondering where I knew you from..." His ice-cold eyes immediately turned warm when he heard she was the Dupe that he's heard so much about, Josh's ex.
"I understand..." Dupe quickly said and smiled assuringly to save them both from an awkward situation
"Have you called her yet?"
"Yeah I've called her several times, she's not picking her calls though, maybe she's not done with lectures yet?"
"We're done for the day already. I'm sure her phone is acting up again. Please excuse me, while I go get her for you" Dupe said and hurried away.
When Dupe informed Abby that her boyfriend was waiting for her, she was surprised to see he had been calling her none stop for the past twenty minutes without her knowing. Her phone had automatically gone back to silence mode, yet again.
"Aargh! And here I am thinking he got held up at work. This stupid phone just had to keep fucking me up...especially right now that I have a big project ahead of me and can't afford to squeeze out the money to get a new one" she lamented as she hurriedly packed up her books and laptop and said good night to her friend
In less than five minutes, Abby rushed down to the parking lot looking sorry and full of apologies.
"Baby I'm so sorry. My phone now has a mind of its own..."
"Then get another one, it's that simple," He said with irritation, collected her phone from her, and examined it
"...Abike this is ancient, how can you expect it not to have a mind of its own?"
"What do you mean by ancient, can you not exaggerate? My phone is just two years old last week and it's working fine..." She stubbornly said
"What!?..." He chuckled "...are we gonna start celebrating its birthday now too?" He asked, his eyes dancing with amusement "...and since you think it's working just fine, I guess we shouldn't worry about the inbuilt automatic switch that it had suddenly developed after its second birthday," He said and laughed again
"Go fuck yourself, love," She said sweetly and also laughed knowing he was just winding her up
"Nah... I'd rather fuck you love" he replied with a wink, opening the car door for her to get inside.
They banter with each other till they arrived at the mall. After shopping for her personal needs and some groceries, they dropped the shopping bags off inside the car and he took her hand walking her back into the mall
"Why are we going back?"
"We're getting rid of that ancient junk excuse of a phone. It's embarrassing that my girlfriend celebrate her birthday alongside a phone"
"I'm getting a new phone? She squealed with delight and hugged his arm, turning deaf ears to his sarcasm.
"Gee ma'am. What are you?...two years old?" He teased. When he saw how excited and happy she was about getting a new phone, it makes him want to do more for her. She was just so adorable, pure, and genuine with her feelings.
When they got inside the mobile phone and gadgets section of the mall, he not only got the latest apple phone for her, he also insisted on getting her a MacBook air.
"Baby we don't have to get the MacBook, my laptop is working perfectly I assure you.
"Well, I don't like your laptop because it looks old too. How old is it?
"Not funny" she pouted and rolled her eyes. Buying the MacBook is just an unnecessary waste of money, don't you think?"
"I'm rich and can obviously afford it so don't sweat it," he said casually.
"The fact that you're rich doesn't mean we should be wasteful. I just feel..."
"Abby, drop it please..." He said abruptly "I'm getting it for you as a birthday gift. I'm allowed to give my girlfriend a gift without being called wasteful right?" He said and walked off with annoyance to pay for what they bought.
Abby sighed, she saw he was not happy about what she said. 'how am I supposed to make him understand without him getting offended?' She thought
Not that she's not appreciative, the only problem she was having about the two gifts was her mom's scrutiny. Julianna would certainly notice and she would ask endless questions. And how was she supposed to explain gifts worth almost a million naira without telling her where they came from?
Abby followed him to the cashier and hugged him from behind, not minding if there were people around
"Are you angry with me? She whispered enough for only him to hear
"Nope"
"Yes, you're certainly angry. I know cos of the way you answered me..." But when he still didn't answer her, she went around to face him
"Baby I'm sorry okay? And thank you for the gifts, I really appreciate them. Just please don't be angry with me over that..."
He didn't answer, he just pulled her to him and hugged her tightly while he waited for his turn on the line to pay. He has given far more to friends with benefits that he has slept with in the past, so why would giving her just a laptop be a problem that she would make a big deal out of.
'How can she not know that it gives me joy when I bought those stuff for her? This is just the beginning, you just wait and see how I'm gonna be spoiling you rotten from now on.
