Chapter 40 Heartbeat

I heard it! I heard a faint heartbeat that is coming back to life. His faint heartbeat! My eyes turned back to their normal brown color and my heart is pounding so fast but it does not seem bad anymore, it felt good. My heart seems... glad.

I sat back on his roof and feel him beneath me, feeling him alive...

I heard them, the boys who are yelling for happiness. Drena who's crying in joy and Cassy with glistening tears of happiness. Their friend Xenon, is alive.

I waited. I waited until I heard his normal heartbeat, his steady breathing. When I'm satisfied I decided to stand up...

But, the moment I started walking, I heard him... "Claire..." His voice was hoarse.

I smile. Wait... I am... smiling? I put my fingers on my lips, I am smiling! But it disappeared... It went back to its normal... blank.

But the point is, I did smile! It's not force, it happens without me forcing it.

I went outside the campus and into my house in the middle of the forest.

I'm also coming back to life...

Drena's POV

Xenon is my friend, he was. When Adrian called me that he's in critical condition, I didn't think twice to go to their house and Cassy came with me.

Everything seems so fast, he's so weak and I'm trying to calm myself because the boys lost it. This is also the moment that Cassy and Coby talked without bickering. She's comforting him.

And Adrian he's in frantic.

"Adrian please calm yourself." I pleaded as I caressed his back.

"Calm? My friend is dying!" He yelled as he stands up from the couch and started pacing again. "He's dying and I can't do anything about it! It's all my fault!" He shouted more to himself.

"Adrian, it's not your fault. Someone did it and he's already dead. It's not you, so don't blame yourself." I explained to him, it's not him.

A worker from the restaurant gave Xenon a drink that he ordered but with poison on it. When they knew what happened, Lucas and Coby took the guy and killed him. How come it's Adrian's fault?

We tried taking him to the hospital but the guards won't let us out because they said we don't have permission. What kind of excuse is that!? We have a patient and they don't care. Worst the head of the school is not here!

The boys tried to escape but the guards threatened us.

We tried calling the doctors and asked about what we can do to save him from the poison. But the others denied it, they said they don't have an antidote for this kind of poison inside him.

They just told us to take him to the hospital in order to lengthen his life but they can't assure to give him the aid for the poison, there's no cure for the poison inside his body.

"You don't understand Dren... you don't." He said in his low voice back facing me.

I held his hand and made him faced me. "Then make me... make me understand," I said as I looked deeply into his eyes. He looked away.

"Claire..." I heard Xenon calling Claire's name. He's so weak...

He's been doing it, he's calling her. His eyes are closed but he's trying his best to stay in his consciousness and I think he's thinking of her to stay awake.

I let go of Adrian's hand and went beside Xenon as I held his hand.

Claire is not here but I can help him to at least fight for his life. I don't know what to do but Claire told us to keep him awake but I don't think he can survive this. No one can help us, the others are looking for help.

Only Adrian, Lucas, and I are here and he is losing it, his losing his strength. I cried again.

Adrian has been crying earlier and now he wears his red puffy eyes.

Lucas on the other hand is trying his best to stay calm but he's been spacing out. The moment I came here, I heard nothing from him but his eyes are red, pulling the tears that wanted to come out. Right now, he's sitting in one of the couches here in Xenon's room.

And Coby? He was lost, he destroyed things he can see. He keeps on punching and kicking things, a good thing Cassy was there for him. He already calmed down and now they are out looking for someone or anything that can help.

Then suddenly the light's turned off. I looked at the other buildings, it's far from here but I can see that they have lights.

"Stange..." Adrian murmured behind me "I'll look for it." He said in a soft but sad voice.

I faced Lucas "I'll get a flashlight, look for him okay?" I told him and he nodded.

I walked slowly in the dark, careful not to make myself clumsy and fall. I looked for a flashlight, I saw it on the dining earlier. It's dark but I know it's here, I tried tapping the cabinet, it's dark so I can't see but I can touch. Here! I got it now.

I turned the flashlight on and went back to Xenon's room. When I opened the door I was shocked to see a girl in the window.

I thought I saw a ghost! But the moonlight gave a clear view of her face. Claire!

It was so fast! I just caught a glimpse of her and she jumped down,

"Claire?" I immediately run towards the window and looked down but, found nothing! We're on the second floor and the building is too high, it's suicide! And it is so impossible the second I saw her, a second she disappeared. No one can do that!

I know what I saw but, am I sure of what I saw? Did she come here for Xenon? Or I was just imagining her. Maybe.

Suddenly the lights turned on. Then, I accidentally glanced at Lucas, has he been sleeping all this time!? How can he sleep in this kind of situation!? Xenon. I immediately hurried to look for him.

"Oh no, no, no." he's not breathing! "No! Xen! Please, wake up!" I cried which made Lucas wake up "Shi*!" He cursed. I cried while shaking Xenon, I was lost, I don't know what to do.

Lucas immediately hurried towards Xenon and put his palm on his chest and started pumping it. The door busted open. I can see Adrian with tears again, he's so vulnerable.

Cassy started crying too, she's so soft that even she's not too close to Xenon, in this kind of situation she easily broke. While Coby, I can see tears flowing down his cheeks.

"No, wake up. Please Xen wake up!" Lucas cried while pumping his chest continuously trying to take him back to life.

Coby held Xenon's right hand "Dude! We still have so many things to do! We're not done yet, so please... don't leave us hanging..." he's so broken, Cassy caressed his back comforting him.

This is the moment I saw the Insigma Fighters so vulnerable, so broken.

I looked at Adrian glued at his spot while staring at his lifeless friend with tears falling down but no words are coming out.

I went towards him and hugged him, forgetting our past. He needs my comfort and I need him too. I cried on his chest as he leaned on my shoulder and hugged me back, silently crying.

"Damn it Xen! You have unfinished business!" Lucas said punching the wall "Get the fuc* back to your senses!" He kicked the wall hard. Unfinished business?

Coby is leaning on Xenon's bed while holding his hand. Then suddenly "Oh shit!" He said in surprise.

All of us stopped and looked at him. His face held happiness "It's beating, his pulse is beating." He said in low voice not believing what he had just felt.

No one dared to move, it's like everyone freezes. But I immediately hurried to him and take his pulse. It's beating!

"He's alive!" My voice beamed in surprise and happiness.
