Chapter 70
Darwin initially thought he deserved to be rewarded for the stupid and dishonorable behavior he had done in the past. He even made room for it when Darius gave him the task as a form of his seriousness in proving whether or not he deserved to continue accompanying Velove as a husband.
Really, when he found out that his fate had been toyed with by his father-in-law, there were two things that Darwin felt, disappointed and relieved. Darwin had thought that his seriousness in fighting for Velove was seen as a mere game. But, on the other hand, he should feel relieved, because no matter what, from the start he was serious about doing what he was told and in the end he was able to prove that he deserved to be Velove's companion and continue his marriage to his wife.
Darwin thought, everything will end here. How could he have ever thought that there was something else that he needed and was obliged to clarify to his wife like tonight.
"For heaven's sake, Velove. Can you explain what you just said?"
Darwin couldn't hide his surprise when he heard what Velove just said. He was sure that his wife had just confessed to something big.
"I apologize in advance," Velove squeaked. The expression on his face was getting more and more difficult for Darwin to read. "I know, you must be confused by what I just said."
"Yes, I'm confused," Darwin nodded repeatedly. He just didn't even know what to do with his wife. "That's why, you need to tell me what happened exactly."
Velove nodded. Take a deep breath, then look at the husband, then start telling stories.
"As you heard from Vicky... it's true that someone met and then asked him to work together to separate us. And that person wasn't Nathan, let alone Papa. The man who met Vicky many times was Mr. Andy. He was indeed a confidant I assigned to meet your ex-boyfriend."
Velove then remembered that day. The day when Velove deliberately arranged for Vicky to attend a big meeting and event celebrating the Wijaya Group's birthday. She was also the one who deliberately brought her husband together at the party.
Seeing how Darwin treated Vicky when the two of them passed each other at a party, Velove wasn't necessarily happy. The next day, he went straight to Andy Prasojo, his confidant, to do something he considered important.
"So, what task should I do this time, Mrs. Velove," asked Andy when that day he specifically met Velove at a cafe.
"In the coming days I will go to Korea with my husband and cousins. I want Mr. Andy to meet Vicky Rose. Ask him to work together to separate me and Darwin."
Andy's brow furrowed deeply. He tried to understand the command Velove had just given him.
"You mean Velove?"
"As you heard just now," Velove said confidently. "I want you to work with him. Just make an offer with a big prize money. I want to see what reaction he will give."
From this order, Andy then understood. Apparently the boss gave the order to test the husband's lover whom he had previously investigated.
"If it turns out he agrees, what should I do, ma'am?"
"Just go ahead with the plan. Watch and see what he will do."
"But what if he turns down my invitation to cooperate?" asked Andy then.
Velove took the first sip of the green test in his cup. Smiling, then nodded slowly.
"If he refuses, just give him a break for a few days or weeks, then invite him again with a higher prize offer. And after that we'll see whether he sticks with his choice. Or is he carried away by the money we offer and then acts stupid until fall into the trap I prepared."
Darwin gaped again for a few moments after hearing what Velove told him. Shortly after, he blinked, then shook his head in disbelief. All this time, he has been searching, even guessing here and there, and it turns out that Velove is the mastermind behind the incident.
"But, for what, Ve? What are you doing all this for?" asked Darwin in disbelief.
From his eyes, Velove knew that Darwin was so surprised and maybe shocked by what he had just heard. It can't be helped, Velove really needs to tell all of this so everything can be clear and nothing else needs to be covered up.
"Actually, I'm doing all of this just to make sure and test whether you and Vicky can be trusted."
"What?" Darwin repeated. "So you're doing this to test my loyalty and also Vicky's commitment to the deal you made?"
Velove nodded.
"Once again, I'm really sorry. After what you did at the beginning and realized that you really loved Vicky, I can't just believe that you can change in such a short time."
"Gosh, Velove," Darwin exclaimed while continuing to shake his head. "So, from the start you doubted and didn't fully trust me?"
I don't know how many times Velove nodded his head when Darwin asked a question. Velove was sure that tonight her husband would definitely interrogate her to get to the root of the problem.
"To be honest, at first it was true. But, since the sweet treatment you showed in Korea, and all kinds of evidence that was given, I slowly started to believe and believe in your sincerity. Because of this, after that I sincerely did what a married couple should wife did a long time ago."
Darwin took a deep breath. Trying to understand every word that came out of his wife's lips. For some reason, he found it difficult to describe his mixed feelings at the moment.
"And after believing in me, you're still trying to test Vicky by asking other people to get him to work together?"
Velove nodded again. Not in the least evading or denying what Darwin accused him of. Because everything her husband said was true.
"Yes."
"But for what, Velove?"
"Obviously to determine whether Vicky is serious about keeping his promise, or even tempted by the offer I made."
Darwin then laughed wryly. I don't know why, it's just funny to hear what Velove said just now.
"The fact is that after many times the people you ordered came to ask, Vicky refused many times, right?"
"Yes," nodded Velove. "Fortunately Vicky always refuses."
"If not?" interjected Darwin quickly. The look on his face seemed curious about what answer his wife would convey.
"If he messes up, of course I won't stay silent, Win. You can definitely guess what I might do."
Darwin then rubbed his face in exasperation. Now, he was confused himself what to do with his wife. Should he be angry? Or just let this event overflow and just be forgotten?
"Or could it be that the accident that happened to Vicky's aunt had something to do with you too?" Darwin accused suddenly when he had been silent for a few moments before. If you think about it, it makes sense for Velove to do this. After all, his wife has power and can do anything. "I remember clearly, you used to threaten to do anything to Vicky and also her aunt if she dared to do anything."
"I'm not that crazy, Win," Velove argued, disapprovingly. After having confessed at length about all of his actions, this time Velove strongly rejected the inhumane actions his husband had accused him of. "Even though I could do anything, I never thought about harming other people. For God's sake, I have nothing to do with what happened to Vicky's aunt."
Darwin was almost at a loss for words. He didn't even know how to act anymore. In fact, who had been sitting on the bed, now chose to edge down as if he was about to leave.
"Where are you going, Win?" Velove asked when he realized Darwin's sudden change in attitude.
"I need some time to be alone first," said the man briefly as he walked towards the cupboard, then took one of the casual shirts for him to wear, because he had been shirtless all along.
"You are angry at me?" Velove squeaked later. He felt even more uncomfortable seeing Darwin's cold and flat attitude like now.
Darwin then turned around. Back stepped closer, then stopped right in front of the bed.
"Do you think I need to be angry about everything that happened?"
"Win...."
Darwin then raised one of his hands in the air while shaking his head. Signaling Velove not to continue his sentence.
Darwin was afraid that when his wife returned to speak at length, he could no longer contain the emotions within himself.
"Just so you know, I really can't describe how I feel about the events of the past few days, Ve. If you think about it, I'm like an idiot whose fate has been toyed with. I know, I deserve to be rewarded for my past actions. But that's not the way to go either."
"Win ..." Velove called once again. This time, she hoped her husband would listen first to what she was about to say. "Me and Papa did not mean to play with you."
"Oh, of course. You guys are not playing me. But, you're testing my loyalty and sincerity in our relationship, right?" said Darwin in a very sarcastic tone.
Velove is getting worse and feels guilty. Especially seeing the look on Darwin's face, which was originally happy, now slowly turning flat without expression.
"I'm really sorry. Maybe what I've done has gone too far. But, please, please understand my intent and purpose here."
"I'm not angry, Ve," shook Darwin while continuing to speak. "I'm just disappointed. And it seems, I really need time to calm down and also fix my bad feelings right now."
Darwin then went out of the room and did not know where to go. Right now, he really needed time alone to calm his chaotic heart and mind.
