Chapter 34: Last race
Darryl's brilliant red sports car reached the starting line last. Many eyes turned to him, they must all be curious why Darryl's car was carrying two beautiful women.
"I recognize that beautiful brunette, she is Darryl's wife. But as far as I remember, they have never been publicly together or appeared together in public. She's a recently popular singer, but it's a pity that her marriage doesn't look full and happy, right?"
"And the blonde with the curvaceous figure seems to be Dulcie. She's just a slut who likes to show off, I've seen her a few times, but it seems like a woman like her is quite popular with men."
"At first I thought Darryl's wife was lucky, now I see her as unlucky. Except for the title of 'Darryl Rider's wife', she is just a shield to keep Darryl's lovers or mistresses safe."
Regina passed by where the models were chatting, hearing them mention her, Regina couldn't help but feel moved. As it turned out to be true, the reason for Darryl's strange actions towards her turned out to be only because she was a shield for the person he really loved. From the very beginning, Regina had reminded herself a thousand times that she must not be soft-hearted and expect this marriage to be bought with money. Yet, just a few random acts of gentleness from Darryl could turn her mood upside down.
If she wanted to protect herself, she couldn't love Darryl Rider.
"Get out of the car." Darryl looked at Dulcie.
"I think I broke my ankle when I got out of the car, it really hurt. I'm not sure if I can walk or not." Dulcie winced in pain, it didn't look like she was pretending. Perhaps she had been holding back until now before she dared to speak.
"If you can't walk, crawl away. I'll give you three minutes."
Darryl didn't even look at her anymore, he immediately left. Dulcie was so embarrassed that she blushed, but she had no choice but to endure the pain and get out of the car. In the final race, Darryl and Sullivan are the two people with the highest chance of winning the final.
Darryl and Regina shared a car, while Sullivan was with a girl Regina was very familiar with. Indeed, Regina never thought she would find Julia here. Julia and her friends were all excited to be invited into the cars, and seeing how close Julia and Sullivan were, Regina couldn't help but doubt their relationship.
Normally, Julia was very fond of trendy and glamorous clothes, this time she was even more daring and revealing. Her red bikini is so attractive that every man looks at her with lustful eyes. Involuntarily, Regina tried turning to glance at Darryl, curious to see if he was like the other men. Unexpectedly, she found him staring at her.
"What's wrong with my face?" Regina gasped and touched her cheek in confusion.
"I'm not sure."
Regina took out the mirror to look at it, but she saw that there was nothing on her face, just her cheeks were slightly red.
"Here it is." Darryl suddenly grabbed her chin and turned towards him, then without a word he kissed her on the lips.
Regina froze. Darryl's kiss was nothing like the previous ones, without sex or burning lust, just a gentle touch of their lips. Up close, she could clearly see Darryl's thick eyebrows and eyelashes.
Until the kiss ended, Regina was still so surprised that she didn't blink, she touched her lips with her hand. Her heart was pounding so hard she was afraid he would hear. Obviously the man sitting next to her is a bad guy, he treats her arbitrarily and rudely, many times he also insists that there can be no love between them.
But what was that kiss just now?
The uncontrollable emotion that had just rekindled in her heart made Regina angry with herself, she aggressively put away the mirror with a scowl.
“Hey, what…” Darryl was puzzled by Regina's attitude.
"Please don't do such unreasonable actions next time, okay?" Regina turned to look at Darryl and said irritably. Tears welled in her eyes, but she was determined not to let them fall.
"What do you mean?"
"I know myself that I am the wife you bought, you can treat me badly at will. I also understand that I should obediently follow his words and not be allowed to have feelings for him. But, to be able to do that, at least don't misunderstand me, okay?"
Regina couldn't hold it any longer, she shouted at Darryl's face with warm tears in her eyes. For the first time, Darryl couldn't keep the calm on his face. Even someone with a low EQ would realize that Regina had feelings for him. That sentiment was largely negative and resentful towards him, but it also contained a hint of unsightly affection.
"Perhaps I was wrong in the first place." Darryl used his finger to wipe away Regina's tears. "I think I need to explain to you that my mind has changed."
"What?" Regina looked at him in bewilderment.
Before Darryl could answer, the referee waved the flag to signal the race cars to get ready.
"Waiting for the end of this lap, we need a clear talk."
Darryl applied the brake and turned on the accelerator, switching to racing focus very quickly. Regina felt a little tense, her hands tightened on the seatbelt, taking a deep breath to steady herself. The red racing car sped away like lightning, taking only a few minutes to take the lead and leave the competitors behind. The car's engine rang crisply, white smoke wafted out of the car.
It was clear that Darryl was racing as recklessly as Sullivan, but somehow Regina's mood wasn't as suffocating as before. She just felt a little nervous, her heart beat fast. She assumed it was because she was used to racing at high speed.
"Afraid? If you're afraid, put your hand out."
Regina heard Darryl's calm and steady voice, and Regina's fear was greatly relieved for a moment. She hesitated for a few seconds, then slowly reached out and took Darryl's hand. His hand was very big, his fingers were also long, he easily wrapped her slim and small hand inside. His palm was really warm, and hers was cold from anxiety.
At this time, Sullivan's car suddenly accelerated and overtook Darryl's car. He swaggered down the car window and hurled obscenities to provoke Darryl. Even though it was only a few seconds, Regina was able to see Julia sitting in Sullivan's car. In her arrogance and confidence was knowing she wasn't afraid at all. Julia even freely shouted excitedly, then turned to kiss Sullivan sweetly and passionately.
Sullivan's black car raced to the finish line, while Darryl was quite calm, not panicking at all. Perhaps, the time to accelerate to the finish line has not yet come, so Darryl is not in a hurry to pass Sullivan but leisurely let Sullivan be complacent for a while.
"Aren't you going to overtake that car? Almost to the finish line." Regina fidgeted a little, the fear was gone and replaced by excitement.
Seeing Julia, she felt her competitive mentality reawakened. Julia can be strong and bold, so can Regina. She didn't want to lose to Julia, even though this wasn't even a fight between her and Julia.
"Want to win?" Darryl laughed. "Come here, if I speed up, you can rely on me."
"Is that okay? I'm afraid it will be dangerous and affect your racing."
"Trust me."
Darryl pulled Regina's arm so she sat on his lap. She sat snuggled in the middle of his tall body, feeling excited as if she were racing a car herself. She could see the road zigzagging before her eyes, the trees passing by, forming a green trail that seemed to stretch forever.
Her back was against his chest so she could feel his steady and steady heartbeat, not unlike her heart racing wildly in her chest.
"You must win." Regina said when she saw Darryl's car approaching the rear of Sullivan's car.
"Um, we'll definitely win."
Darryl flashed a confident, haughty smile, honked his horn twice to annoy Sullivan, then demonstrated his driving skills to pass Sullivan's black car. The sound of wheels on the ground made a squeaky sound. Regina's whole body swayed, but since she was sitting on Darryl's lap, it wasn't affected too much.
The muscles in his arms tensed, he gripped the steering wheel and accelerated, gliding past the black car and easily finishing in first place.
"Great, we did it."
Regina cheered, she couldn't have imagined that racing could be so exciting and amazing, it was dangerous, but it was a wonderful experience.
"Is it that fun?" Darryl looked down at Regina in his lap with a loving gaze.
"That's right. Oh wait, why don't we just stop at the destination?" Regina was surprised to see that the car continued to move, but at a slower speed.
"We also had a talk, don't you remember?"
