Alpha Benna
A call jerked me up from my drowsy state. After rubbing my eyes, I slid my phone across the table and looked at the caller ID.
It was Alpha Maseno. How weird? I smirked, swiped the answer button, and raised my hand to press the phone against my ear. “How lucky am I that the son of a demon personally gave me a call? Could it be that his father Lucifer is ascending and inviting people over to his majestic mansion?"
He chuckled. "You really like to dream, don't you? But like always, your dreams are just fake and will never come true. I'll always crash them, even before they achieve one percent success." I am not going to lie, but I felt like these words had a deep meaning.
I felt like my heart was struck by lightning because it trembled, snatching my breath for a while.
"Scared? Come on, don't be a sissy. I haven't told you and shown you how I crush on these dreams of yours just yet. You know, Benna, this is something about you that..." he trailed and then continued, "Forget about it."
"Why did you call? The last time I checked, we were enemies, so where the hell did you get my number?" I asked instead, not wanting to listen to his ramblings and whatever.
"Getting your number is quite easy. Have you forgotten the power I hold?" I pictured him raising his brow and smirking. What an asshole he was!
"Just go straight to the response, Maseno. I don't have time for you!" I snapped while clenching my phone. How I wished that my phone was his neck and that I was wrapping my hands around like that. What I know is that I wouldn't have let go until his eyes popped out of their sockets.
“I am sending you gifts, Alpha Benna.“ He responded; his voice was now calm. I furrowed my brows, wondering if I had heard that correctly. Why would he send me gifts when my men were now in his kingdom, destroying everything? Or could it be that they never went out of fear of being caught and are just pulling my legs?
"Why don't you ask just to be sure that he said gifts?" My wolf asked, so I asked, “Gifts?“ Surprise pressed on my voice. “Since when did we start sending gifts to each other?“ When I saw his call, I thought he wanted to warn me, like he always does when my men invade his kingdom or destroy his business and properties.
“Let's say, just now, Benna. Let me know if you like them.“ His voice jarred me out of my world, full of questions and what-ifs.
"I don't want your gifts, Maseno. Take them back, and if they are already on the way to my pack, ask your men to toss them wherever they want to." I responded.
"Too late for that because, as I am speaking, they are a short distance away from your pack. Also, I don't take gifts back. Once I give them out, they'll remain the same. It's now totally up to you to keep them or toss them away. Don't forget to call me when they arrive." Upon saying that, he hung up without giving me a chance to respond.
“What kind of gifts is he talking about?“ I asked myself while pacing around the office.
“You have spies in his kingdom; why don't you ask them?“ My wolf reminded me.
Quiclky, I dialed Doctor Kedeva's number, which was picked on the third ring. “Can I help you with anything, Alpha?“ He asked.
“You aren't doing your job well, are you?“ I inquired and went to plop on the couch in front of the glass wall that overlooked the bustling city ahead of me.
“And what's that supposed to mean?“ He asked, his voice low as if he were whisphering. I guessed that he might be with his colleagues.
I chuckled. “Alpha Maseno just called me.“ I replied. I heard him cursing on the other end, apologizing, I think, to his colleagues, then hearing the sound of shoes shuffling on the floor. It remained silent for a second before I heard a door creak open and then close.
“What did he tell you? Did he say that he knows about me and you?“ He sounded worried and scared. I don't blame him. I am scared of Maseno as well; it's just that I am good at hiding it.
“Hold your horses, young man.“ I tried to stop him from overthinking.
“I can't,” came his harsh reply, which sounded like he half-yelled and half-whispered, "Just tell me already if he is now aware that I am your spy."
“It's nothing like that. Rest assured.“ I assured him and chuckled when he sighed in relief. Maseno was his childhood friend; they have grown up together and went to the same school; in short, they have experienced the ups and downs of life when together, so it was normal for him to be so scared at the thought that he was caught.
When I approached him, offering him the deal of being my spy, I never expected him to agree, and when he did, I was surprised. To trust him fully, I asked him to do something that would make me believe that he was by my side and that he wasn't pulling my leg, and that was when he surprised me. Dude killed Alpha Maseno's mother. The woman who raised him when his mother died of an unknown illness!
The truth is, I know that his opinions can't be trusted. If he killed the person in his family and is now betraying the one who is like his brother because of the few dollars I keep sending to his account every month, he can do anything to me given that we have no bond, and that is why I am planning to throw him under the bus when all this is over.
“Then why did you call me, and what do you mean by I am not doing my work well? You scared the shit out of me, man.“ He admitted pulling me back to reality.
“What is he planning at the moment?“ I asked the question directly because I knew he had little time to spend on the phone with me.
I could hear the rustling of papers from his end, making it obvious that he had returned to his office and was busy with paper work.
“Honestly, I have no idea. I have been busy testing the new machines he brought for the pack's hospital and carrying out experiments, and I haven't gone back to the palace for like a week now. Why are you asking, though? Is he planning anything?“ He asked.
“I already told you that he called me, right?“ I asked, and when he hummed in agreement, I continued,” He said he's sending gifts to me and that I should call him back and tell him if I like them when they arrive. I just don't feel good about this. Could it be that it's a bomb?“
A chuckle echoed from his end. “You are scared of bombs? I don't think it's a bomb anyway, because he wouldn't have told you about them. Did you perhaps pick a fight with him?“
“Nay. I only sent my men to go and create chaos in his kingdom. While he and his guards will be out trying to fight, the head guard will slip inside and look for Kiara."
He sighed. "Look for Kiara? I have already told you so many times that she is not there. You don't believe me, do you?“ His tone changed into a frustrated and bitter one.
“I want to make sure that you are not lying to me. I have conducted searches all over the world, and she is nowhere to be seen. The only pack left is Alpha Maseno's. He is so cunning. It could be that he took her and hid her from all of you," I told him.
“Fine. Let me know if you find her, but I doubt it. Also, don't forget to update me about the gifts."
I nodded even though he couldn't see me."I definitely will. I'll hang up,” I said while looking at the reddish truck making its way through the gate.
