Samantha
Samantha POV
Father and I stand over Blake as she sleeps in the bed. He is looking at her wound and trying to decide if and when Blake will become a vampire.
"This does not look good, but we need to know more. Send Henry to get the pack doctor. He can look at her and see how far along this has gotten. Such a pity," Solomon says.
I look at Blake sleeping. Her eyes roll occasionally. I do not know if the stress of finding out there are creatures in this world other than humans or something about her transforming upset her, but she went down hard. Father is right; it is a pity. She did not get a chance to tell me a lot about herself, but I know enough to know she does not deserve this.
I walk through the house, upset and wanting to cry, but there really is no time to be upset. I have to help Blake. She needs our help. She is so young and does not deserve this. I go out the front door to find Henry. He is outside talking to Jake and Kay.
"Henry, Alpha needs you to get the pack doctor, please," I say to him.
"I am on it," Henry says. Getting a doctor would be quicker if Ono, the pack doctor, drove, but he has not driven in years. If we get him, we have to go to him or send someone for him. I rush back into the house to check on Blake. My father is coming out of her bedroom and stops me.
"Let her rest. We do not know if she will wake up looking for someone to snack on, and I do not want that to be my daughter," Alpha says.
"She needs our help, dad. You cannot kill her. She is too young to die. She did not ask for this," I beg him.
My father looks angry. We know about Lord Robert and what he is going out west. He is pulling in these young women, turning them and making them killing machines. Someone has to stop him, but no one will stand against him. The vampires will outnumber us soon if he keeps turning women at this rate.
My father walks away from me quickly and goes out the front door. I know what he is doing. He is going to smoke. He does not often smoke, only when he is upset and needs to think. It gives me time to check on Blake.
I go into the bedroom and sit beside the bed. Blake is lying so still. Her eyes are closed, and she looks peaceful, but I know she is not peaceful. If she is turning, then there is a war inside her body, and she will be bloodthirsty when she wakes. I barely know her, but I want to help her.
I take her hand and hold it in mine. I did this with my mother before she died. I thought holding her hand would keep her alive, but it did not. I want Blake to know I am here for her. I will not abandon her for any reason. I only have to convince my father to help her, save her, and let her stay here with us. A vampire staying with the Alpha will not go over well, but we have to help her. She is all alone. If she leaves here and goes to be with Robert, she will lose herself in murder and mayhem. I refuse to let that happen to her.
Father comes through the bedroom door mad as hell with the pack doctor. Ono rushes to Blake's side and looks her over, pushing me out of the way.
"Samantha, I told you not to come in here with her alone. Do you have a death wish or something?" Father scolds me.
I shake my head. "No, but she should not be alone," I answer him.
My father growls but sits down next to me and takes my hand. "I know you are only trying to be a good person, but if she is a vampire, then we will have no choice," Alpha says.
I roll my eyes and leap to my feet. "I will help her any way I can with or without you," I say. Father grabs me and puts me back in the chair.
"Sit down and stop being irrational. I will figure this out," Father says. One thing about my father, he hates to see me upset. I refuse to turn my back on Blake.
Ono finishes his exam of Blake. "She will turn, but for some reason, it is going slowly. Do you know anything about her or her family?" Ono asks.
"No, I met her on the train. She is running from some bad people. I know her mother died a few years ago, and her father is abusive. That is all I know," I answer the doctor.
Ono clicks his teeth. "She may be something other than human, but there is no way for me to know with her in this condition. I cannot say for sure if she will make a complete turn. Something is going on with her. I will come back and check on her daily until we figure this out. She is young, and I see no reason for me to put her down if we can save her," Ono says.
It clicks in my head. He brought Ono here to put Blake down in her sleep, not to check on her. "Am I safe with her? I want to look out for her until we know more," I question Ono.
"I think so. I will leave a sedative here with you. If she wakes and is bloodthirsty or in pain, then give it to her. I have no idea what is going on with her, to be perfectly honest. I have never seen anything like it. I think this young woman has a supernatural quality to her, but I cannot pinpoint what it is," Ono says.
My father walks Ono out of the bedroom. He leaves the door open as he leaves the bedroom. He is angry and worried about this situation with Blake. I take Blake's hand in mine and hold it. "I will not abandon you, Blake," I say as I stroke the top of her hand.
"Thank you," she whispers and falls back into a deep sleep.
Solomon POV
Ono leaves as I sit outside, contemplating what I should do with Blake. Samantha is right about one thing, and she is too young to die. Ono is not even exactly sure what is going on with her. I walk to the end of the porch and watch some of the young wolves for a moment. They are so young and carefree like I once was before I became Alpha.
If I kill Blake, Samantha will hate me. Besides, if she is turning slowly, it might help to know more about her; perhaps it could help others in the future to know about Blake and what happened to her.
I hear screaming coming from inside the house. I run for the back bedroom to see if it is Samantha or Blake. The screaming stops when I get outside of the bedroom. I hear Samantha speaking softly to her as I stand outside the door.
"I promise we will help you," Samantha says. They are crying. I push open the door to see what is going on with the two of them. Samantha is holding her hand, much like she held her mother's hand before she died. This situation is problematic for her. She does not want to lose this girl. I will do everything to help her. Samantha looks up and sees me standing at the door.
"You have to help her daddy," Samantha says. I nod my head. Blake lets out a blood curling scream. It sends a chill down my spine and makes me hurt for her.
"She is in pain, Samantha. You need to give her the sedative," I say.
Samantha shakes her head. "She does not want it," Samantha says.
I go over to the cabinet and grab the sedative and syringe. I draw enough to relieve her of her pain but not harm her. She begins to scream when I come close to her with the needle.
"Blake, this is for the best. As your Alpha, you will take this without a fight," I demand. Blake relaxes and lets me inject her with the sedative. She looks at Samantha, and a single tear rolls down her cheek. I touch the side of her face softly.
"She needed it, Samantha," I say.
"What will happen to her?" Samantha asks. She knows the answer to the question she is asking. We have seen it many times before, just never this slowly, and it seems to be more painful.
I sit down beside Samantha. "Listen, I promise you that we will take care of her," I say.
"How? The pack will not allow her to stay here, not even for me," Samantha says.
"Blake came here as my servant, and she will be my servant even in her vampire form. It has been done before. Wolves have vampire slaves, just like vampires have wolves for slaves. She will be mine, and there will be no questions raised about the situation," I say.
"At least it will keep her safe," Samantha says.
"Yes, it will. Did she say anything about her family on the train?" I ask.
"No, you think she is something supernatural, don't you?" Samantha asks me.
"I do. There is no other explanation for her turning so slow. If she were human, she would have turned on the train ride here, probably killing all of you on the train. Why was she on that train?" I ask.
"The ticket clerk thought we could help her, but I do not think she knew she had been bitten," Samantha said.
"Or maybe she did. I will have Marco find out everything about the ticket clerk. I want to know if she is involved with the vampires," I say.
Samantha stops me. "She is an old friend; she thought we could help her, surely she did not put me in danger," Samantha says.
I kiss Samantha on the forehead. "I do not trust anyone these days, child. The ticket clerk did reach out about helping Blake because vampires were after her, but why did she put her on a train with you and I want to know if she knew she was bitten," I say.
I look back at Blake as I leave the room. She is restless and in pain. I can only imagine what she is going through under the mask of the sedative. "Dad, please help her," Blake says as I leave the room.
I plan to help her, and I am just not sure exactly what she needs from me. Generally, at this point, a human would turn and be bloodthirsty. The only choice I would have would be to sedate the person until they went to sleep permanently. Blake is different. Blake has a quality the others did not have, and I want to know what it is.
I go into my office. I sit down behind my desk to absorb everything that has happened with Blake and Samantha. Marco comes into the office. "Alpha," he says as he enters the office.
"I have a little job for you, Marco, and I think you will love it," I say to him.
"Sure, Alpha, Whatever you need," Marco says.
I smile at him and pull out a file. "There is this ticker clerk that helps us from time to time to identify people who the vampires are chasing. I want to know everything about her and her ties to the vampires," I say.
"Sure, how soon do you need it?" Marco asks.
"I need it now, so you should take a car and head to Sin City immediately. I need you to take care of this tonight," I say.
"Yes, Alpha. Do you want me to bring her here if she is helping the vampires?" Marco asks.
I think for a moment. "No, if she is responsible for what is happening to that girl, then kill her," I say.
"Yes, sir. I will let you know as soon as I know something," Marco says.
"Thank you," I say.
Marco leaves to find out more about the ticket clerk, and I sit and look out the window, trying to figure out what in the hell I am going to do with Blake.
