Chapter 56 MEETING KATE
"Good afternoon ma",
"Good afternoon Kate, how are you?",
Kate lived in the same compound with Sobrina and also attended Gracedome. She was the first lady to get close to Sobrina. Sobrina had a very intimidating personality - she was excessively pretty - therefore, ladies envied instead of befriending her.
Sobrina had noticed Kate few months before she joined Gracedome. She was a pretty lady, tall, fair and young.
There was a man who frequently visited her. He was facially handsome but his legs were bow.
"Ma, this church is not all it seems o", Kate said to Sobrina.
Apart from the fact that Sobrina was now traditionally married, she was also older than Kate. But Kate addressed her as "ma" simply because it was the fashion for ladies in Gracedome.
"What are you talking about, Kate",
"Gracedome is not all it seems. Ma, forget the appearance, they're not all they seem", Kate was being reluctant with revealing all she wished to.
"My friends, my very own friends are trying to take my fiancé from me", Kate continued, she mentioned some prominent names in the church, some of the ladies Sobrina had come to admire.
"How do you mean?", Sobrina questioned.
"We used to live together. They all knew this young man long before I did. In fact, he was friends with Joy, one of my former roommates, before we began to date. Whenever he visited me at the house, my friends would go almost naked in front of him. They would take of their clothes while playing with him", Kate bitterly reported.
"Wow, were they aware that you guys were dating?", Sobrina questioned.
"Of course, that's the only reason he visited to the house regularly. The worse happened when I confronted my friends. Joy slapped me, and told me that my fiancé started dating her before me. I had to leave, now they visit him regularly, and even sleep over at his house", Kate continued.
Sobrina was surprised, these were supposed to be Christian ladies. One of them was the assistant Pastor of the church. She couldn't believe her ears.
"They don't even speak to me again. And everyone is supporting them", she concluded.
"Everyone?", Sobrina questioned.
"Yes, everyone. From Pastor Davis to all the other Pastors and their friends. They're a big clique",
"Alright, I will speak with Pastor Davies about it, I'll get to the root of this problem", Sobrina promised.
Sobrina spoke to Pastor Davies a week later. Pastor Davies told her Kate had broken her relationship with the man in question by herself, and added that the man was even about to be married.
Sobrina wasn't aware she was being used. She took the news to Kate, and advised her to let the young man go, not knowing she had been lied to. The man in question was Pastor Davies' close pal, and wasn't ready to settle, not in the next ten years.
He was a student Post graduate student, who had met Kate as a virgin. He had used and dumped her, and was moving on to the next lady. Matter of fact, he had subtly approached Sobrina once, and had gaven up after he discovered she wasn't in the game.
He had been searching for how to let Kate go, and when Kate got fed up with how he was misbehaving with her friends in front of her, and had spoken out about it, he had quickly ceased the opportunity to leave the relationship as fast as he could.
He had also led Kate to believe he was stupendously rich. He said he owned companies all over the country.
Sobrina knew this to be false, some of her course mates who lived around Pastor Davies' compound had complained to her - during one of their gossip times - about how the guy would come begging for food, or for little money at their place. How could such a rich student, who was even preparing to be married, have a reason to beg for little things?
Kate was deeply hurt as only a jilted virgin could. She had fallen in love as only a virgin could, and it wasn't easy to separate her from him. She couldn't let go. Sobrina tried her very best to help her but failed, because she couldn't totally believe her when she began to finally reveal the secrets of Gracedome.
Kate couldn't open up to Sobrina about losing her virginity to the man either. She felt ashamed and disgraced, coupled with the fact that it was too much of an accusation to make. Her subconscious mind couldn't handle what might happen if the guy should deny it, as she was sure he would, judging from the way things were going. It would have been his words against hers, and he had more support than she did.
Kate began to go weeks without food, nothing mattered to her anymore. She began to fail her courses in school.
Sobrina visited her room once and left in total disgust, because it appeared she had not swept it for many months. Everything was scattered, rotten and smelling.
Kate gradually began to stink herself. Nobody could bear to stay around her. She was gradually losing her mind.
Pastor Davies had began to treat Kate like an enemy to the church, he claimed she was spreading false rumors about the church.
Kate used to be among the Pastoral team, and held a couple of other positions in the church. Pastor Davies had also stripped her of all responsibilities without previously informing her. While the brother in question was given higher position in the church, and was sometimes given an opportunity to preach to the congregation during services.
Sobrina had tried all she could to get Pastor Davies and members of the church to take Kate's issues seriously - with care and love - without success. She finally gave up and began to see Kate as the villain.
Sobrina decided Kate was probably just acting out of offence, making spiritual things seem very flimsy, and the slandering people she depended on for her spiritual growth.
She innocently told Pastor Davies about some of the things Kate was complaining about, concerning him and the church, one day on their way to prayer meeting. The Pastor laughed and denied everything.
Sobrina began to send Kate away whenever she visited her, as had been advised by Pastor Davies.
Kate was seen a two months later, fully mad, dancing around in the streets of the University. She had badly applied makeup smeared on her face, she sang as she danced.
Sobrina wept when she heard the news. By now, she had started noticing the truth in all that Kate had revealed. But the girl was now beyond redemption.
Pastor Davies invited Kate's parents from home, and Kate was caught and bundled home.
