My sister
“Before we set our hearts too much upon anything, let us examine how happy those who already possess it are.” - Francois de La Rochefoucauld

"You both should go and rest." I said, hugging my arms around my knees, my eyelids lowered to the floor and were growing heavier due to all the tears I had spilled.
"We aren't leaving you so that you can cry alone in your room." Kat huffed, crossing her arms in front of her chest.
"But you came all the way from NY to California, twenty-two hours flight Kat." I said but the frown on my face said otherwise. When she didn't move and the scowl on her face didn't loosen, I sighed and sat straight.
"I-I thought after everything we've been through; it'd be fine now. We could just be colleagues and have a final professional relationship, but I was wrong. Seeing him daily just makes everything harder." I said in one breath. "I met my brother Kat, and he doesn't even remember what I did to him, to Xavier, to his child. Then too he accepted me with all his heart. At least today, Xavier would have not been so mean to me. But no. He had to remind me every fucking day and I am not taking this anymore!"
Kat gently rubbed my cold arms, warming my cold extremity. Her eyes lingered on my face for a moment after which she said, "He still loves you Eve, no matter how much he denies."
I almost let out a chuckle at her words, almost. "Still." I whispered. "Maybe he still loves me after everything, but for me to love him when his looks have changed. The concept of falling for him just makes me hate myself more because it proves that I'm just the same shallow person."
"Enough!" Yelled Mason.
Looking at his angry figure, "M-Mase," I stuttered.
Walking towards me he ushered Kat who approached him to say something. Crouching down in front of me, he said, "Enough of your pessimistic comments on yourself, Evelyn. Stop being so hard on yourself. I have known you since your rough days and I'm telling you that you are not the same naïve person anymore," positioning my chin to look into his warm eyes, he continued, "You're beautiful, smart and a very warm person. And as far as loving him is concerned, I think you fell for him a long time ago. You were in love with him when you saw him waiting for you on the altar. You just haven't realized it yet."
Inhaling deeply, "What if he realizes it after there is nothing to realize anymore?" I stated in a low voice.
Mason stood up and then cast a disappointed glance at me. When I thought, he was going to leave, Mason longed his hand in front of me to take it, and when I did, he pulled me onto my feet.
Holding my hand in his, he guided me towards something. Standing behind me, "Look at the beautiful angel standing in front of you, Evelyn," said Mason.
When I looked up in front of myself, I saw a strawberry blonde girl with red puffy eyes, looking harder to recognize her, I found myself looking at my reflection in the mirror.
"Do you know who she is? She's Evelyn Williams, whom I met four years ago when she was at her worst. She had lost everything she lived for, at a very young age. And I think this girl has suffered enough in her life and now she just deserves the best." He said as I immediately turned around and buried my face in his chest.
"Thanks." I smiled at my wonderful support system as Kat too joined our hug making it a group hug. At least I have Mason and Kat, my brother and best friend who would always be there for me, no matter what.

A saccade string of ringtone woke me up, looking at an unknown number, I ignored it. But, when the caller didn't take the hint, I picked up the call, "Hello?" I said, irritatingly.
"Oh god, Evelyn! Where the hell are you?" Someone yelled from the other side and it took me an absolute minute to recognize who he was.
"Marc?" I murmured.
"Yes, Marc, your brother whom you met yesterday after years, remember?" He said, sarcastically.
Immediately sitting up on the bed, "Oh god! I'm so sorry Marc, I'm with my friend…...Actually, she landed here in California at a very late hour, so I accompanied her-"
"Get your ass here in ten minutes, Evelyn." Said Marcus and he was annoyed, no scratch that, he was pissed.
God, what have I done?! Ugh!
"Yes, yes… I'm coming." I said and hurried towards Kat and Mason's room as soon as Marc cut the call.
"Mase! Kat! Open the damn door guys!" I exclaimed while banging their door with all the power I had in my arms.
I heard someone groaning from the other side as they walked towards the door, "What is it, Eve?" Groaned Kat, blinking her eyes to adjust the brightness.
"I'm leaving." I said, walking towards the washroom to wash my face.
As if my statement awakened her, "Wait! What?" Kat said, following me to the washroom.
Turning the faucet, I washed my face, and then turned around to face Kat, "Marc called and he was pissed."
"Okay, we're coming with you, and-and no argument." Said Kat and before I could react, she ran into her room.
Exactly after twenty minutes, we were standing outside of Xavier's house with half asleep Mason, enthusiastic Kat and well myself. We entered the house and walked towards the living room, expecting it to be empty but I gasped when all three pairs of eyes diverted to me, eyeing me up and down.
"Good morning, everyone." I plastered a smile on my face and moved towards Marcus who stood at the sight of us. The frown on his face told me that I was late.
Thankfully, he turned his attention to someone behind me. "Care to tell me, who are they?" Marcus asked.
When I looked back, I saw Kat guiding half asleep Mason towards the couch, on which he slept like a big bear. Chuckling at his smiling face, I turned towards Marcus and was about to say, "They are-"
"You brought your boyfriend to my house." Hissed Xavier, who walked down the stairs and I couldn't focus on his words because my eyes were frozen on him. To say that he looked like hell won't be an understatement. There were huge bags under his eyes and his always gelled hair looked unusually messy. He had a huge cup of coffee in his hands from which he was taking small sips, all the while messaging his temple.
He is hungover. And wait, did he just point to Mason as my boyfriend?
'Oh, yeah, he did!' My consciousness replied.
One by one, each head had turned around towards Xavier. When he didn't say anything, I added, "I think we shouldn't judge someone without knowing the whole truth." I said, looking at Xavier.
Before Marcus could say anything, Xavier raised his voice. "We judge because we know that someone can change his or her habits, but one thing can never change is nature." His words sounded like they were directed to me, but wait they WERE directed to me.
"Well," Chris started to say something but I cut in between.
"Never is a very big word. We shouldn't throw it away so casually Mr. Knight." I claimed, despite my instincts telling me not to.
Xavier's eyebrows furrowed at my words, and he stood before me which I didn't realize that he was walking towards me while we were arguing, "Sure. I mean you obviously know more about throwing things away than me." He said and to describe briefly my feelings at that moment, it stung, bad.
An air of awkwardness filled the room, with everyone looking towards us with confused or worried eyes. When I looked around, my mind registered that our bitterness had been displayed in public and that too in front of Marcus who looked slightly shocked.
Someone held me by my shoulders and when I looked at my right, I saw Mason and man, he was angry. Kat stood behind Mason, holding his right hand as his left hand was around my shoulders.
"Let me tell you one thing, Xavier Knight, never, I repeat never talk to her in this tone or I will for sure cut your tongue and will feed it to you." Said Mason in a low and threatening tone.
Before Xavier could argue, Mason continued, "And to clear your preposterous claim," he looked at Kat and said, "She’s, my girlfriend." And then looked at me with a hint of small smile gracing his lips, "She’s, my Angel."
"Angel?" It was Marcus who questioned.
Looking at him, Mason said, "Yes, my Angel," reverting his eyes from Marcus to Xavier, "My sister."
