What have I done?
“Is it possible to love someone so completely, so intensely, they could never die? To give them more than just your heart or your soul? What if you could give them the miracle of immortality?” -Kellie Thacker
Xavier was too mentally exhausted to deal with Evelyn after that morning, therefore he took a week off to rethink his decisions and spend some time with his son Alexander.
Soon the week passed, and Xavier found his way back to his office. He sighed in relief when he saw Evelyn's empty office as he desperately wanted some more days away from her.
As soon as he got the call regarding Alexander's health, Xavier was about to leave his office and go home when he saw Evelyn standing behind him dressed in a light blue dress, her hair was pulled up in a bun with few tendrils caressing the side of her face.
They argued a little but, in the end, Xavier agreed to take her with him to his house. Looking at how she was handling Alexander like a mother made him feel emotions that he was restraining himself from feeling.
But, every ounce of soft emotions went in vain when he saw the envelope in Evelyn's bag. While watching cartoons with Alexander she slept, and he didn't have a heart to wake her up, instead he tucked both of them in a duvet.
It was already night, when Xavier went to check on them in Alexander's room, seeing her caressing Alexander's face, he asked her to meet him in the living room.
She gingerly followed his request and went to meet him. Her soft feminine scent filled his surroundings, and when he asked her about the envelope, she looked shocked.
It took him just a sentence to kiss her and all the sane thoughts flew out of the window. He just wanted to taste her soft, plump lips coated in a cherry lipstick. Angling her face, he deepened the kiss as his tongue slowly drove into her mouth and he kissed her with passion. The girl that he held in his embrace always had an important place in his heart, she made him feel things that nobody succeeded in doing.
At first, she was unable to decipher what was happening, but later she used force and pushed him away.
"Are you out of your mind, Xavier?!" She yelled, her eyes raging with fire.
"Listen-" Xavier tried to explain when she cut him off.
"No. You listen to me, Mr. Xavier Knight. I get it you're angry, and you don't want to be associated with me anymore. And this-" pointing at the envelope, she continued, "this is my resignation letter. Didn't you always want me to go away, to leave you alone? And, now when I'm finally leaving, you're behaving like a jerk." Her voice was breaking, tears welling up inside her eyes but she didn't stop.
"I'm a human too and it really hurts to be treated like dust all the time." Tears rolled down her eyes as she sat down on the couch behind her.
Looking at her situation, it really hurt the deepest parts of his heart. Xavier wanted to comfort his Rose, and when he stepped forward, Ethan's voice ringed in his ears.
"Some people never change."
And that was the comment which made Xavier rooted at his position. Concealing his emotions, he let out a mocking laugh.
Looking up, Evelyn found him laughing at her, mockingly. She furrowed her eyebrows and asked, "What are you laughing at?"
Gaining his composure, he stepped forward and asked, "You're going back to California, right?"
Wiping her tears, she stood up and nodded, "Yes." Said Evelyn, seriously.
Xavier closed the distance between them as they now stood chest to chest, "Hmm… going back to your lover, already, huh?"
Arching her eyebrows, Evelyn moved aside, creating some distance between them as she then asked, "What do you mean?"
"I really want to know Evelyn; how do you plan all of this?" He asked once he was in front of her, again.
Rubbing her forehead, she asked, "What are you getting at, Xavier?" She almost pleaded. His eyes darkened and his jaw was clenched.
Towering over her, "You know I'm really intrigued. How do you do this? First sleeping with your ex-husband, then going back to your lover, for whom you betrayed your husband. I mean, there might be a number of people. But, have you kept tabs of how many men you fucked?" He leaned down and gritted each word.
Evelyn stood stunned, she never thought in her worst dreams that Xavier Knight would ever question her character, out of all people, it was none other than Xavier himself. If she had been heartbroken earlier, tonight it was completely shattered, far away from its mending point.
"W-What?" She stuttered.
"Yeah, c'mon tell me." His eyes were red from anger, "Was it ten, fifty, hundred, tell me?!"
"Bloody characterless-" before Xavier could abuse her, flinging her hand furiously, Evelyn slapped him.
"I never slept with anyone but you!" She yelled, as frustration and hurt dripped from her voice, shocking Xavier's core.
Holding his cheek, he retreated some steps, blinking hard at her furious figure. It took him some time to register her words, and when he did, he chuckled humorlessly.
"Stop lying." Xavier ordered.
Shaking her head in denial, she turned around and tried to leave when Xavier grabbed her wrist, claiming, "You are lying!" Afraid of admitting the possibility of her being correct. And, if that happened, it would mean that whatever he believed was a lie.
Feeling numb, "It was always you, Xavier." Her voice thickened in grief as she was trying too hard to control her uncontrollable tears.
"But," Xavier heaved, "Ethan said you cheated on him...left him." He mumbled the latter to himself, running his fingers from his hair. To him, it felt like someone slapped him hard on his face.
Well, Evelyn literally already did.
Turning around, Xavier saw Evelyn's grief-stricken face as her eyes glistened with tears and rage, "What do you mean 'Ethan said'? Did you meet him? Is he here?" Asked Evelyn, gritting his name out of her teeth.
Xavier seemed to ignore her question as his mind was still stuck on her words, "You haven't slept with him and left with his money?"
"Did he tell you that?" Evelyn asked, "What a story he made, I'm sure there's more to that." Said Evelyn, tears streaming down her puffy eyes, hiccupping she said, "And you believed him, Xavier? Oh, yes. Why wouldn't you?"
"I…You…" he was tongue tied at this moment.
"You believed him, listened to his lies and even forgave him for the same mistake that we both made. If I betrayed you as a wife, he too betrayed you as a best friend and fed you lies. Here I'm suffering since that night, drowning in my guilt, taking every insult you've thrown at me, and here are you, standing and forgiving your friend who stabbed you in the back long ago." Her words were full of accusation, hurt and grief.
"I never forgave him….it-it was easy to agree with him."
Hearing his words, the last glimpse of light left her eyes, and Xavier immediately regretted his choice of words. It pained him to see her cry and as much as he wanted to reduce her pain, he couldn't do much in this situation.
Wiping her tears, she put a fake smile on her face, "Of course, I understand." And before Xavier could utter a single word, she turned around and left.
And this time, he didn't try to stop her because first, Xavier Knight needed to confront someone before it got too late, or was it already?
Seeing Evelyn's retreating figure, Xavier felt his heart being squeezed inside as he felt clouded in negativity.
"God! Why am I getting the feeling that I would never see her again?"
