Chapter 27 Failed to Protect You
The word "brother-in-law" almost made Bane sick. She did not really want anything to do with her husband Betsy Reed, but Bert, for some reason, always gave her a strange feeling.
Just like the beautiful and dangerous poppy, very dangerous, but also very tempting.
Bert seemed to Bane the very embodiment of this flower, and to her she felt dangerous and seductive.
Bane braced himself for a refusal and then made an excuse to leave.
But Bert did not give her a chance, and only said, in a calm, firm voice, "Come up!"
The black sports car was so ostentatious that if she got in it, it would be in the headlines tomorrow.
"Mr. Ron, I want to go without you!"
Bert hated being rejected, and had never been rejected before, but he was not at all angry when Bane refused him.
"Give me a reason."
"I don't want to cause any trouble..."
Bert threw the car keys at Bane, who was about to say something, and Bane rushed to pick them up, afraid they would fall.
Bert stood with his hands in his pockets naturally, and said faintly, "You can do it!"
Bane gasped. Bert, in her mind, was fierce and cold, always simple in his speech.
But now somehow feel a little pestering?
Bane really wanted to get away from this Bert Ron, and the key was like a hot potato. She wanted to throw it away, but she didn't dare; it wasn't cheap.
Bane stood still, and Bert stood there, very patient.
Bert was so handsome, with a flashy sports car next to him, that people looked at them sideways as they passed.
Bane was about to compromise when there was a familiar voice behind him.
"Bane, I'm coming."
Bane froze, a voice so familiar that he would never forget it.
Ward Jonathan stood a little behind her, his features delicate and solid, his white suit, his long hair falling naturally, giving him a very soft look.
Bane turned and saw Ward walking toward her with a calm air, as though he had made an appointment to meet her.
"Bane, what are you doing there? I've come to pick you up."
Bane was about to refuse, but when he saw Bert next to him, who was looking very ugly, it was on his lips: "Yes, I'll be right there. I'm sorry, Mr. Ron, but I've got to go."
"Then she went over to the bonnet and put the key down. She did not give it to Bert, for fear he would refuse.
Ward looked at Bert and said, "Hello, Mr. Ron," with a smile.
Bert looked at Ward, and soon remembered. "A son of the Jonathan family?" he said.
"Yeah, yeah, Mr. Ron remembers," said Ron.
Bert's face lit up with a playful smile, and he said, "Yes."
Bane was at a loss.
These two people, how can there be a sense of understanding?
Ward reached over and put his hand on Bane's waist. "Bane, let's go back, Mr. Ron. We'll meet again."
Ward passed Bert and Bane, and Bane heard Bert say something in a low voice as they passed each other.
Bert watched the two men go, and it was a long time before he looked back.
At that moment Tom rushed forward, and stood beside Bert, and said, "She's been taken away, not pursued?"
"No."
Tom raised an involuntary eyebrow. "Isn't it?" he said. It was the son of the Johnsons who took him. He seems to be on very good terms with Bane Reed."
Tom waited for Bert's command with an expectantly look; but as he passed a long time without hearing a word, he looked at Bert, and saw a smile on the man's face, but it was cold and unwarm.
Tom clasped his arms and made a mental silence for Bane.
Bert's shadow disappeared at last, and Bane's suspense subsided, and he moved quickly aside to distance himself from Ward.
Ward's heart ached.
"Why do you know Bert Ron, Bane? He's too dangerous."
Bane's face darkened when he heard this. Bert was a dangerous man and she knew it, and she didn't want to have anything to do with him.
Bane was beginning to wonder if he was in bad luck.
"Betsy Reed is his wife."
Ward was surprised that Bane had a stepsister whom he knew of but had never met, but with whom he understood to have a troubled, even hostile, relationship.
Bert Ron, married?
"So he's your brother-in-law?"
"Don't say that word to me."
Ward smiled. His eyes were as deep as hidden stars, and he was as fascinating as he was fascinating.
"How have you been these years, Bane?"
Bane was silent for a moment.
Perhaps it was because Ward had just come to her rescue and had been so gentle with her that she felt less resistant to him now.
After all, this was the man she had been very fond of, and she would not have wanted to treat him so coldly if she could.
"Not bad."
Lying.
Ward's heart ached more.
The last time he had gone to Bane these six years of things, all the investigation, almost let him distressed suffocation.
Bane had always been on his heart's edge, but he didn't protect him and let her go through six years of hell.
So no matter how cold she is now, he will not be angry.
"Bane, I'm sorry."
"He said suddenly.
Bane's steps stopped.
Ward stopped, too, and looked at her, his shadow lengthened by the street lamp, and the light came down, putting a little sparkle into his delicate features.
"Bane, I was wrong. I left you and didn't protect you. Can you forgive me? Let me make up for these six years."
Bane's eyes turned red and his hands clenched into fists.
Ward went over and took Bane in his arms, but felt her stiffness and repeated, "I'm sorry, Bane."
I'm sorry I didn't protect you.
Bert saw the same thing again.
The other time he had seen it by chance, but this time he had followed.
He sat in the car, look unknown, the dim light inside the car will be his eyes foil is very deep.
His eyes fell on the opposite pair of embracing men and women, his fingers rhythmically beat on the thigh, do not know what to think.
