Chapter fifty
"You have no right to call my line.'' Laura seethed.
She had woken up so early to the loud sounds of her ringing tone blasting through her bedroom. In her haste to pick it up, thinking it was Drew, she had accidentally set a small part of the room on fire with her magic going haywire.
"How dare you speak to your stepfather in such a manner.'' he seethed.
"For your information step father, you stopped being that the minute you told me you didn't care about me so I see no reasons why you have to call me,'' Laura said.
She worked a spell that cleared the room immediately of all smoke and debris even as she felt the choking sensation associated with fire accidents. This was all his fault, if he hadn't called, Laura wouldn't have set the room on fire, and in turn, she wouldn't be having this migraine that was slowly edging to the surface.
"I never said that you liar.'' Alpha Jed screamed.
Laura knew his emotions stemmed from the fact that he was frustrated being that he was weak and all.
"You call me a liar when you're the one telling a lie now. Step Father, what went wrong with you and your miserable son. These are not the people I used to know,'' Laura said.
She was almost moved to tears now as she tried desperately to tamp down the tears that threatened to cloud her eyesight. Laura had never felt so alone as she felt that minute especially since her mate wasn't there to comfort her.
"Nothing happened, we just moved on to the truth,'' he said.
Laura's face was filled with a confused expression as she tried to make sense of what her stepfather was saying. Laura knew there were truths in what he was saying but try as she may, she couldn't quite connect the dots and she hoped he gave her a hint of what he was saying.
"What do you mean?" Laura said.
"You see, this is what I mean when I say you're still living in the dark.'' he mocked.
Laura stared out the window, thinking about how her life was going to become now that she had completely alienated herself from them. She knew she was going to feel hurt but she didn't care because she had her mate, someone who loved her unconditionally.
"Whatever it is you both are doing, I don't care but I hope you get caught soon and pay the price for your evil.'' Laura seethed.
"All the more reason why we left you but mind you my darling, I'm coming for you and when I do get you, you'll wish you hadn't left.'' Alpha Jed said
Laura gripped the phone tighter just as she heard voices in the background. She was trying to decipher the meaning of the strange language she heard in the background when Alpha Jed rudely cut the call.
She dropped her phone on a nearby table and took a seat by the edge of the bed. She sighed as she stretched her legs out, feeling the strain from standing for several minutes. Laura didn't know what to do in this case but one thing she was sure of is that he was hiding something. Heck, her father hadn't even called her in three weeks which only buttressed her point.
"He's crazy, both of them are,'' Laura said.
Just then, her phone blared indicating she had another call. Laura swiped the caller ID and smiled when she discovered that it was her mate calling.
"Hi,'' Laura said.
"Mate. How are you?" Drew said.
"I'm fine, I woke up a few minutes ago,'' Laura said.
"What's wrong love, your voice sounds tired and irritated,'' Drew said.
Laura didn't know how he knew but she was grateful someone knew exactly how she was feeling.
"It's my stepfather,'' Laura said.
At the mention of this, Drew growled so deeply Laura thought he had transformed until he spoke again.
"What! Is he there?" Drew said.
Laura could hear him pacing about and she was saddened she had to be the cause of his present worry.
"No, he's not here. Far from it,'' she said.
"Then what's the problem?" Drew said.
Laura told him all about her stepfather's conversation with her. Thinking about it now, Laura discovered she had spoken to him for the whole of ten minutes which was the longest they had ever spoken.
It was usually between two to three minutes, five minutes if what they were both sayings was eventful.
"Don't worry love, soon we'll find out what your stepfather is after said.
"Thank you. I hope you and Jack are okay?" Laura asked.
She made her way towards the kitchen, in need of a hot cup of Cocoa to ease the coldness she was feeling within her.
"I got some things that would enable me to nab Jed,'' Drew said.
"Oh wow! That was so soon.'' she smiled.
That was one thing about him, he would always get to the root of the matter especially if it was something that desperately wanted to solve just like the issue with Jed.
"Oh, that's good. Have you found out anything yet?" Laura asked.
She poured some hot water into her cup before adding some dried powder of the brown substance.
"Not yet but one thing I'm sure of is that Jed is working for some government official,'' he said.
"Drew, are you sure about that? It's a very serious offense especially when it's found not to be true,'' she said.
She couldn't stand it if what Drew said proved to be false and he was made to pay for telling a lie against the demon leader. She knew Jed could be evil but in some cases, he proved to be the name he was called, the demon leader.
"I'm sure of it love and I can't wait to prove it to you, to the whole world,'' he said.
Laura sighed, she knew there was no way she could change his mind especially when it was set on something.
"Just be careful, that's all I'm asking,'' Laura said.
"I will. Please stay safe and sound, I'll be back before you know it.''Drew said.
"Hurry, I'll be waiting.'' she smiled.
"Love you mate.'' Drew chuckled.
"I love you to the field.''
No matter what happened, Laura was always going to stand for her mate. He was part of her just like the way she was part of him and she wouldn't have it any other way.
"Jed, I can't wait to see the end of you,'' she said.
She knew they would succeed as failure wasn't a part of them.
***********************
"Let's head back to new york tomorrow,'' Drew said.
It's been a day since they invaded Jed's lair and since they had gotten what they came for, Drew knew that there was no point staying any longer. Deep down, he knew that the main reason why he wanted to leave was because of what his mate told him about the previous day.
Alpha Jed calling her wasn't a good thing and Drew knew that anytime soon, they would be getting a visit from them. Try as he may, he still couldn't find out anything about them which left him unsatisfied and irritated. He was used to getting his answers but this felt like he wouldn't be getting it anytime soon.
"I thought you'd never ask.'' Jack sighed.
"Missing home already?" Drew chuckled.
"You bet I am especially with my mate's condition. I'm pretty sure she has missed the hell out of me.'' Jack chuckled.
"But man, I warned you not to come but let me take Killian instead-but the guy insisted now look, it makes me look like a bad person,'' Drew said.
"I'm not complaining about that Drew. You very well know that I wouldn't have missed this mission for whatsoever reason. I have a score to settle with Jed and it would take more than infiltrating his buildings before I can get my pound of flesh.''Jack said.
"Man! We should go ahead with rescuing your sister. I don't see the reason why you are trying to slow us down.'' Drew said.
"I'm not trying to slow us down but I believe that everything has its time. The time for rescuing her isn't here yet but when it comes, there will be no stopping me.''Jack said.
Drew knew those were wise words from someone who had been through a lot and judging by what he had said, Drew knew Jack was a man of little words yet great action.
"Alright, I'll go with what you've said man. But that doesn't mean I'll stop thinking about it.''Drew said.
Jack smiled sadly, wishing he could comfort his boss but he didn't know how as everything seemed so blue and strange to him.
The next day, the duo left for New york. They had gotten what they needed and the only thing they needed to do was look through the documents and find what they could use to nail Jed and his entire pack.
They got to New York soon with little to no turbulence. Jack made his way to the private club while Drew went straight home. He wanted to surprise Laura since he had told her he would be spending three days when in fact, he spent only two.
Drew walked into his mansion, waving to the numerous staff who greeted him. He walked towards the private quarters of the building where he and his mate stayed. He got there soon to see his mate's back to him in the kitchen.
Drew could tell she was preparing breakfast. He smiled, dropping his bag quietly on the chair before walking silently towards her. He was grateful for silent feet which were part of the features of being a wolf.
"Drew?" Laura said.
She turned around swiftly just before Drew could reach her. Drew grabbed her waist, spinning her around. Laura laughed, wrapping her hands around his neck. She was so delighted to see him and come back earlier than expected.
Drew sat her down and gave her a long slow kiss. The few days they'd been apart had affected him more than he was letting on.
"Drew, when next you travel take me with you,'' Laura muttered.
"I'm considering that idea and I think I'll go with it.''Drew smiled.
"Thank you. How was your trip?" Laura asked.
She wrapped her legs around his waist as he carried her towards the living room. Laura laughed when he tickled her. He sat down, still holding her in his lap. He kissed her, loving the way she was always ready for him.
"It was fine, got some stuff concerning Jed we'll need to work on ASAP. Asides from that, it was you I missed.'' Drew muttered.
He nuzzled her neck, loving the way her scent invaded his nostrils. Her's was a heady scent and the only reason why he hadn't gotten his way yet with her was due to his fatigue.
"Okay, that's a starting point.'' Laura smiled.
"Wait. How did you know I was in the kitchen when I hadn't even touched you yet.'' Drew said.
Laura laughed and it was melodic to his ears. He couldn't believe how lucky he was to have been paired with her by the moon goddess, this just showed that the best things come to those who wait. He couldn't believe what a fool he had been to have involved himself with someone like Benita.
"I can't explain it, Drew, it's like a heady feeling,'' Laura said.
"How?" Drew chuckled.
"I think I'll call it intuition. Anytime you're close by, I just get this tickly feeling within me. Sometimes, it's hard to explain but I can't deny it's there.'' Laura said.
Drew smiled. He knew what she was talking about, it was the link that connected all mates and theirs just got much stronger.
