Now I was sitting here in a group of women. Including the Luna and the Beta's mate. Everyone was talking to each other and I just sat there uselessly. I didn't quite know what to do here, but Bea caught me after breakfast and took me here. The other women here, like Bea and Luna, were obviously older than me and talked about their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. This still struck me as a little odd since none of the women looked older than 60 for a human, but I probably didn't want to know how old the female werewolves really were.
As far as I knew, at least the alpha and beta couple experienced the revolution themselves more than 300 years ago and probably had grown-up children by then.
For me as a person it seemed crazy that there were even people who lived to be more than 100 years old.
"Has the future Alpha's mate already seen the doctor?", the question of a lady with already gray streaks in her dark hair tore me out of my thoughts. "No,
Lily, who can hear you by the way, hasn't seen the doctor yet today The second pack doctor didn't have time for that today," said the Beta's mate, pulling up an eyebrow as she spoke.
,,Oh, you know how I mean Bea. It would be good for the pack to know if the next Luna can talk to them too. After all, she will be one of the most important people in the pack. In addition, the first pack doctor could also examine you. That might be better anyway. Patrick has by far more experience than Luke, he's still green behind the ears!"
But then Luna interfered: "Magda! I know for you as a born werewolf Patrick is a great doctor, but his dealings with people are lousy. He treats people as if they weren't capable of logical thinking at all and has scared off all his apprentices except Luke because he doesn't want any competition. And Tyler already noticed that as your future alpha. He decided after his mate's first 'examination' that Patrick would no longer treat her, and since Tyler has been her guardian since he found Lily, that's his decision, not ours."
"Patrick himself once said that people are just too sensitive," another older woman intervened and grimaced in disapproval: "Everyone who complained about him was or is human. It seems to me that there is something to it."
"Are you trying to call me snivelling?" Luna roared, because the woman had stopped speaking. "
No, no Luna! I certainly didn't mean it like that. I meant to say that people simply aren't used to dealing in packs and therefore many things seem different to them than to us.", the woman tried to save herself, but the Luna was still upset and growled.
"Yasmin, come down," Bea spoke to her: "You know as well as I do that born werewolves don't understand our human-shaped perspectives."
"Then maybe one should beat this understanding into their brains!", the Luna still growled angrily, but at least she didn't yell anymore: "After all, I am, as well as your future Luna and like all Lunas that ever existed and will exist a born human. One would think they would have some understanding for the human-born, but no. They also complain about them! And that goes both here in the pack and in every pack of my sons, since the idiot I am also really dear, has drummed this nonsensical ideology into them!"
There was dead silence in the room. Nobody dared to say anything while the Luna was still in a rage.
The werewolves looked down, embarrassed.
"L-Luna, we're sorry.", the first woman murmured softly and only ducked further when the Luna growled menacingly. It took another two minutes until the Luna
had regained her composure and took an audible breath.
, "Lily, please come, we're going to my office. It's best if we talk in private. There are only comments here from people who have no idea about the subject.", she spoke to me for the first time since I was here consciously and gestured towards the door with one hand.
I got up hesitantly and left the room with Luna under the gaze of the other women.
We walked through the building for a few minutes and went up a stairwell to the top floor. The Luna with no problems and I just blushed and gasped.
The Luna gave me a pitying look and then quickly ushered me into her office, which was right next to the Alpha's, and handed me a glass of water.
,,Come sit down. There's a lot I need to say and explain to you," she said, pointing to an upholstered chair in front of a desk with a large armchair. I sat down and the Luna took the armchair across from me
.
"So, just so you know, the room is soundproof. No one, not even werewolves, can hear what's being said in here. So you don't have to worry that someone overhears this conversation." She said and added almost inaudibly quietly: "Like my companion, for example."
I looked at the woman questioningly, but she just sighed.
"So," she said, "The role of a Luna is a very responsible one and has always been filled by a born and then transformed human who is also always the mate of an Alpha. Why is that? nobody knows and there has never been an exception to this apparent rule, but despite this, werewolves have not been on good terms with humans for many centuries and it has happened often enough in history that alphas in particular manipulate their companions to such an extent that they share their bad opinions about people in general.
The werewolves are actually always of the opinion that they would be the better rulers of the world, since they are by far stronger than humans and also live in a better social structure. Other opinions on the subject are often ignored and suppressed. The fact that I was able to say that down below is only due to my position and that I didn't let my companion completely unsettle me when it comes to my opinion of people.
It's important to remember this Lily, no matter how much you love your mate, never trust them 100%."
I looked at the Luna in surprise. I really didn't expect that. I had already noticed that not everything was good between Luna and her companion, but she really just told me that you should distrust your own companion. The two had lived together for centuries and, according to their own statements, also loved each other.
But could it really be love? When you couldn't even trust the other person completely?
You constantly had to reckon with being manipulated?
But the more important question for me right now was whether Tyler and I would end up like this?
I had always imagined the connection between companions as absolute love. One that was preordained. A soul mate that only made life possible together.
Was it all just like one of those ridiculous fairy tales after all? Where you supposedly lived happily ever after, which no one questions?
